Dragon Quest 7: Warriors of Eden (3DS/JP) |OT|

It's coming out in October. If I say it enough times, it'll come true.

Well since the whole GAF --> Gaming Site News --> GAF cycle works.

Perhaps if we start the rumor of localization, it can become so widespread that NoA will feel the pressure?

GAF--> Gaming Site News --> NoA Annoucement/Direct --> GAF

I'm kidding.

To anyone who is playing this for the first time, I really recommend watching the original intro movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CjdYR4AVVs#t=1m17s

I'm so bummed that that song never plays. :(

Speaking of the original. I put something like 25-35 hours into DW7 for the PSX back near release day. I didn't make it past the job switching section. I dont remember if it was called Darhma (sic) Temple or not. It doesnt matter enough to google it all up, I'm sure you know.

Anyway, even though I didnt finish the game, and 30 hours is little compared to what you CAN put into this game, I feel as though I invested quite a bit, ultimately though I got burned out on the job system.

So that's a really long way to ask: How streamlined/faster etc is the job system appearing to be? Or is it too early to comment on that?

I've still got 3 scenarios to do before I unlock the class system, unless they changed the order of events, so I can't say anything about that yet.

Oh, hey, when you get to
the Gracos section, can you let me know if you get locked in that world like in the PSX version?
Because that was super annoying if you didn't have the Shepherd's woolguard.

I'm watching Kouli's playthrough and, man, that music. So wonderful. I noticed he didn't check sacks on the wall. Did they remove the treasure from those?

Is there any bit of hope or even the slightest hint or rumor of this getting released outside of Japan? (._. )

Well, didn't Nintendo just say that they were going to help Japanese third-parties distribute their games in the west?

DQVII probably has lower sales potential than some of Level 5's games, but I think Nintendo would support DQ ahead of some other potential localisations. (Sorry BDFF).

I just finished the Folrish/Forod scenario. Still wiping away the tears.
I really think this might be the saddest scenario in all of DQ. It gets me every time. :( And seeing everything in greater detail in this remake just made it more touching, I think.

Gotta say that this by far is the nicest looking DQ game on the handheld so far. Even though its been tweaked a bit gameplay wise.

Overall am quite happy with it and look forward to further progressing in the game.

Is it possible to make an account on the Japanese eShop with a US 3DS?

A Japanese eShop account is not needed to buy games. Works with U.S. credit card or debit information, the purchase menus are the same as English 3DS. I bought Bravely Default recently like this.

So I'm at around the four hour mark now, and will likely be playing much more before the day is done. I'm having an a absolute blast with this game.

I finished up the first bit, which was
a lot more sad than I expected. Sucks that the little sister ended up a horrible monster.

Funny how Nintendo is more stringent with region locking, but lets you use foreign CCs. Sony doesn't and I assumed Nintendo would be the same.

Its more that Sony went apeshit after the security breach and made it so you couldnt use foreign cards, when in the past you could.

Then on top of that they didnt put any "flags" allowing for an expat for example to be able to use his credit card as long as he was in country. Which is general a problem within the country in general with credit cards here in Japan. Its really quite stupid as whats the point of having a Visa or Mastercard if neither is accepted if its a non Japanese version of said card.

To be honest, I may have been mistaken about the Earthbound encounter system. I have had a small amount of success with reshuffling spawns, but it usually doesn't work. I'm actually getting kind of annoyed with the visible enemies in dungeons, because the pathways remain as narrow as they were in the original, so there's no way to get past any of them. I'd rather just have random battles back, really.

Agreed damned shame they changed it.

Okay, I got enough people to unlock the internet tavern. This is pretty interesting.

To supplement the StreetPass stuff, they've implemented a system similar to Bravely Default. Essentially, every 24 hours, you can upload your save data and choose a shard to send out and you'll be able to get up to 3 shards from other folks who have done the same via the internet in return. Sadly, when I did it, I got two duplicates of a shard I already had, but I assume once the game has been out for longer, your chances of getting something better will raise dramatically.

In addition to the above option, you can also download event shards that were uploaded by Square Enix staff. There are two up right now, and both lead to dungeons that are way, way too difficult for me right now. There's also a present code option which I guess allows you to get some other promotional shards via gift codes of some sort.

This sounds amazing.

Now I´m at the second island with Engow village. I´m currently on my way down the volcano and I´m really impressed by the battle graphics in this place!

Thick smoke and ember flying all over the place. They really nailed it! I almost sweat!

Sorry, I'm not exactly sure what you mean. I was just wondering in my other post if I could buy DQ7 from the Japanese eShop with my US model 3DS. But it looks like that's a no go. I live in Japan so it kinda sucks doing Street Pass with everyone and they are all playing DQ7. Makes me kinda regret getting a US model while living here. But at least I've got Fire Emblem to play through.

Poor Maribel... The Volcano boss squashed her in one critical hit... No experience for her I guess.

People have been asking about the difficulty level and from what I can remember of the original I think this is similar. I encountered a couple of Imps now and their eye laser attack packed quite a punch. Around 10-15 damage.

If you havn´t got some nice armor I think this place would end the adventure for some unexperienced players. Maybe?

Dunno. I am currently level 8 with all three characters and I havn´t grinded at all.

So far I´ve run from one battle (the imps I mentioned earlier took me by surprise the first time I met them) and on the world map I try to fight all monsters I have never seen before at least once.

Inside dungeons you have to fight quite a lot since there is not a lot of space to dodge the enemies.

The difficulty level is the same, in theory, but due to the way the visible enemies interact with the dungeon layouts, you'll most likely end up fighting more battles than you ever did in the original. I'm three levels higher in this one than I normally am in the original version, and it's not due to any grinding.

At least it is easy to dodge enemies on the overworld so I guess it´s all right.

Have you found some repellant or any spell that lower the encounter rate?

I don´t remember if there was anything like that in the original...

If so, does it make spelunking a less action focused experience?

By the way, I smash all barrels and jars I come across but everytime I enter a building and exit they are back again. Hate to be that guy who has to restock and clean up my mess. I guess it´s a barrel fairy or something.

Even though I already smashed one and I know there is nothing inside I just feel good by smashing it again.

Sounds really good!!
I just wanted to know wherever the original adventure feel is still intact. And more importantly do some cities and dungeon feel as big as before?

Is still there sword dance skill?
Does this ost differ from the orchestral version of the old ost?

Lastly does dharma shrine still rock? I loved that feel there!
And thanks for the early impressions

Of course there is. Holy water/せいすい has that effect in every DQ game. :) Bard also learns トヘロス in the original, presumably it does here too. The effect of holy water in this game is that when you get the "!" bubble on an enemy, they don't chase. It may also reduce the frequency of spawns, but I'm not sure about that.

Sorry I meant to say you need a Japanese 3DS, just that a Japanese credit card is not needed to buy games from the eShop when using a Japanese 3DS. sorry for any confusion.

Just went up through the Yubarl/Deja part. Obviously in the original, there was that infamous super ugly FMV. It's done much better in this version! Of course, you can already see some of it in the trailer, so you all probably already have a pretty good idea of what it's like.

I'm closing in on the class system, although there's still a lengthy scenario ahead of me. I'm really itching to get to it right away.

I don't think Sony allowed their use before the breach either.

The prizes at the first casino aren't even that good, and yet here I am wasting time. (._. ) I've managed to win 6000 coins in a relatively short time period, at least, which is almost enough to afford everything I want here.

I've unlocked the class system now. Sadly, they didn't address what I felt was one of the major issues with it, which was that the equipment that can be used is determined by the character and not the class. It seems to remain that way. Lame oversight.

I'll dig into the details and try to figure out if there are any differences tomorrow.

Oh yeah, my time is 19:45, which is longer than I anticipated due to messing around with the shard dungeons and also making a pretty big mistake going into the Dharma section which cost me almost an hour of grinding for money.

By the way, some of the more powerful hybrid skills, such as sword dance, have been moved. Sword dance is now the ultimate skill for the pirate class (and it costs 2 MP now). EDIT: Apparently it's also one of the skills that hero learns.

Isn't that how it was in DQVI too?

Also I guess the Dharma region remains as is. I know people were hoping they'd shift it up to make class changes earlier - the Dharma region is really long so I dunno how that'd work without ruining the pacing a bit.

Figured they'd do that with the hybrid skills - no complaints there I guess (if they had to take em out entirely that would be way worse).

Yes, but 6 didn't really get a remake. Since this is a full remake, I thought they might make some additional changes, but they didn't.

I have fond memories of dq7. A proper remake and smt iv could make me buy a 3ds

Ah gotcha. I guess the reason it is the same is they probably wanted to keep some character individuality (unlike in IX where that doesn't matter) but yeah it'd have been a welcome change.

I leveled the hero all the way through shepherd and I noticed some differences.

Rank 1: Sheep Dance (previously a shepherd+dancer hybrid skill, this rank used to be nothing in the original)
Rank 2: Squelch (same)
Rank 3: Heal (same)
Rank 4: nothing (used to be Slumber)
Rank 5: Whistle (same) and Sheep-counting Song (used to be a hybrid between bard and shepherd)
Rank 6: Mutton Attack (previously hybrid between martial artist and shepherd)
Rank 7: Wool Guard (same)
Rank 8: Sheep Stampede (same)

The general theme seems to be about the same for all classes. Some useless abilities have either been moved or removed (Slumber was kinda crappy anyway, but it may have just gotten moved, not sure yet), and hybrid skills have been re-integrated. If they got rid of some of the more useless or redundant skills, that'll go a long way toward cleaning things up.

Dang, I want this so bad. I haven't played a DQ game since I played 6 and 5 almost back to back on the DS in 2011. I might play 3 for the first time soon, but I really hope this sees localization (broken record I know).

A change I'm not at all a big fan of is the level range changes for each area in terms of counting for class progress goes. Someone in the Japanese community has been doing research and has determined that the level limit for each area is now about ~4 levels lower than in the PSX version, and I that seems to be in line with my experiences in some of the early areas, because they aren't working at levels that I would normally visit them in the original version. For example, the Folrod region would work up to level 17 before, but I went there at 16 and it didn't work.
