Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen |OT| deep down darkness

Finally ready to properly fire up the game for the first time (I actually preordered a copy and got mine on Day1, all I've done since then was checking out the first 15 minutes of the game, lol), never played DD before. Is there something I should keep in mind to enjoy it more from the beginning, I dunno like be wary of some specific early fuckup, don't do that, don't waste exp/items for this or that or "right way to play it" kinda deal?

Thanks :)

My advice would be to do every side quest as you get it (if you care) as certain main quests cut you off.

Do everything. Explore as much as you can and have fun with the combat mechanics. Always bring a lantern+oil with you or you'll be wandering in the dark at night. Assassin equipped with Dagger and Shield and Merciful Killing+Instant Reset is pure bliss.

And be kind to Asalam, it will be worth in the end.

Just go out and wander the hills. Take it all in. Enjoy. Watch out for bandits though. They should not be taken lightly.

So I' switched to playing magic archer on BBI now for a bit and it's like a different game. F**king awesome. :)

Anyone know if there is some kind of evasive move I can implement, like a roll or something. I'm actually missing my sorc mini-levitate which I was using to get out of tight spots. If I'm gonna dash in for dagger strikes I need to be able to get out again pretty quickly. I'm still really squidgy.

R1+ X/A to roll; you might have to buy it, can't remember.

You can dodge pretty much anything with it.

Yes there is. It's a Core Skill called Forward Roll that is unlocked at vocation level 5. This same Core Skill can be used with Assassin, Strider or Ranger.

What exactly am I supposed to do against Skeleton Lords as a Strider? (Level 19)
My pawns just get wrecked in one hit and it feels like he has more hitpoints than a Chimera.

If you're having too much trouble with that part, you can lure them out one or two at a time. Even make them follow you back up onto the entrance ledge. If things are really too tough, you can fall back on consumables: first-aid, buffs, throwables, etc.

But, usually you just lure them out and deal with a couple at a time. Target their tails. Avoid their attacks (poison spit, jump attack, and tail whip) and stay dry!!!

As for general fighter advice, get all the shield disciplines (or whatever they're called) really helps you conserve stamina while blocking, and you can parry their attacks to break their guard.

The Warrior vocation is nothing but big ass swords. Play a little longer and you'll get to change class to it.

If you're having trouble with a certain kind of enemy, bring along pawns that have knowledge about that enemy. They'll shout out phrases like "Sever the tail!" until you're sick of hearing about it -- but it's helpful when you're learning the ropes.

Yeah those random comments make a huge difference.

On the first time fighting the lizards, I got obliterated completely.
After hearing that bit about the tails and going in more cautiously, none of my pawns even died once.

Thats what I am doing :)

His armour is in the game and so is his initial sword. There are plenty of big great sword sin the game dw :)

Also being a warrior is the best imo. You feel like a badass. Hardly anything staggers you and you hit fucking hard. You see a cave ogre in front of you. Charge up AoD, it comes rushing at you and punches you. Your still standing there with your greatsword in the air and bring it down like the law. Ogre is dead in one hit.

bad gameplay lol
Got this from PS+, really excited to play the Dark Arisen stuff finally, but man am I ever worried about how long the install process is going to take. The original took for-fucking-ever just to install 4.6GB, and the demos took ages to install as well. Installing the whole 12GB game? That's going to take foreeeeeeeever.

Also, I'm a bit worried that I'm too overleveled at this point, and the DA stuff will be too easy, even on Hard. I mean, I'm like Lv. 90 at this point, and my last trip through the main game (on Hard) was stupidly easy.

Warrior it´s not so good latter on, specially in Everfall and BBI.

Don't worry. BBI is a tough area and the second run becames even more challenging.

why's that?Getting close to enemies being dangerous?

I did look at some of the weapons in other classes and tbh its so stupid how swords and bows can be nearly as strong as a great sword. Capcom fucked this class over big time. Assassins gets more str growth than warrior. WTF where they smoking.

Also what lvl should I be for BBI. Can i do it before post game?

Some enemies require being hit in specific areas. Also, in BBI there are many mobs, which are a pain if you are using Warrior.

Because it's a trade-off. Assassin's do have more str growth, but less defense and HP growth.

Also what lvl should I be for BBI. Can i do it before post game?

I recommend doing the first run at lvl 70. For the second run, lvl 90 it's good start, but you should be prepared for a few very tough situations.

I just started a new game... why can't I select hard mode?

And uh... did I just screw up my unlimited ferrystone by starting a new game? Cause I didn't get the prompt.

Hitting new game overwrites your old save, you should have probably backed that up. Since your old save is gone, so is your OG DD save meaning no unlimited ferry stone.

Hard Mode can be quite challenging. Some types of mobs are extremely unforgiving and some classes have a much harder time than others.

You can always restart or change classes or hire some high levels pawns for the main story though.

So, I'll start playing this game today. Is there anything I should know before starting?

Edit: You guys weren't kidding when you said the framerate on ps3 is terrible.

Morrigan Stark

Arrogant Smirk
So I played the vanilla game last year, and stopped just at the beginning of NG+, at the camp right before the hydra. I started Dark Arisen from PS+ and imported my save, got my unlimited ferrystone (yessss, I suppose I can sell my old Ferrystones now? though they seem to sell for a pittance now, ouch)) etc. and I thought I'd have to reach Gran Soren to access the DLC content so I stupidly did the hydra escort quest again... only to open the map later and realize there was a blue circle telling me where to reach the DLC area. lol

So as someone who beat the vanilla game and is just starting the DLC, anything I should know?

Anyway, I'm liking the level design a lot more so far. The dungeons in the vanilla game were all boring linear room->corridor-room, but so far the castle I'm exploring seems to have more thought put into it. Nice. You can tell they really took a page from the Souls game, that castle even has a swampy poison area with leeches attacking you, haha.

I tried to kill the
gorecyclops
but I kinda got my ass handed down to me (currently using a Strider, and my main pawn has always been fighter/warrior but he kinda maxed out all of those so I turned him into a mage just because, I realize that's probably not a great idea). Didn't even put it on Hard, which is nice. I'm level 75 I think. I had a weird mismatched party for some reason, my main pawn at same level, a level 140 pawn from a friend, and a level 17 (lol) pawn from another friend. I probably grabbed the low level one in NG+ to help make her better and grabbed an overlevelled one to counter-balance. It works fine against normal enemies, but she gets OHKOed by the boss, so she was effectively useless. I got that
Void
Key and I'm debating whether to attack the
gorecyclops
again with a better party, or to explore further and come back later. I met that dude who sells amazing gear but it's ridiculously expensive, I only have about 160k. Ouch.

How does level scaling work for the DLC? Are the enemies and bosses adjusted to your Arisen's level when s/he enters the Black Isle place the first time? So far the loot I found has been crappy starting gear (feather capes and throatcutter daggers and stuff) but I assume I'll find better loot at some point.

Also, I never found a way to reduce pawn chatter. I went in the chair and he told me he'd be "more reticent in the future" but he still babbles too much. :( I'm a bit appalled they didn't fix that. Wolves hunt in pack and that hit actually hurt and I need to attack the weapon arm, no shit, STFU already, gah...

Yep, it's a tutorial for the real stuff. The chimera is supposed to be quite killable tho, it might get irritating after awhile but pay attention to the pawns shouting, a lot of the ones you will recruit have fought the monsters before and will give you advice on how to kill them. I am not much of a Demon/Dark Souls fan but was able to down it. I kind of like Monster Hunter though and am a bit used to that so maybe that's what helped, combat vs the larger monsters has some similarities with that series.

You basically have an idea of how the combat is going to work for a fighter though. Try different classes as they play significantly different from each other, and you can use a lot of the skills on other classes once leveled if they aren't tied to a specific weapon. I recommend Magick Archer for a newbie (you unlock it when you reach
Gran Soren
, they are quite good against 95% of the game's monsters (watch out for
Golems
though).

Also, this is going to sound very, very weird and is somewhat spoilery, but heed this advice if you like the game and want to finish it:
if you see any characters who you find reasonably good looking and wouldn't mind "dating", do whatever quests they offer, give them a gift or several if you have anything they like, and give your favorite the ring you are going to get later. it can save you from a somewhat awkward ending

What longsword is better to invest money upgrading between this two guys:

I actually have Gryphic Victory as a reward from an escort mission, but I dig the look of Thousandlimbs...what's better?

Looks like the Gryphic Victory both has a significantly better damage output and uses upgrade materials you can farm sooner. (Hellhound fangs for the Thousandlimbs aren't available until postgame.) You'll spend more on upgrading it to level 3 though (for less relative payoff), and you have to understand that it probably won't be your last longsword. If you were near the end of the regular game (when the better swords start appearing), I'd say sit on the un-upgraded Gryphic Victory for a bit, but you've got a ways to go, and plenty of quest money left to earn, so upgrade-away!

If you're playing on Normal, the Thousandlimbs is enough for most of the original game. Go with what you think looks better.

Warriors are all about that escape slash -> follow up -> air cancel into heavy attack.

I just picked this up through PSN+ and I wanted to confirm something I read earlier. Is it true that you can change your character's class at any time? Can I start as a fighter and then later go mage or strider if I want to?

You can change your vocation at any time by talking to the innkeeper, yes. There are stat growths to watch out for when you level as one class over another, so keep that in mind if you care about powergaming.

You can change it at any time but you have to "buy" the class with experience points first, but once you have a class unlocked it's yours to switch to forever. Also you can travel to bitter black isle right off the bat (the docks at midnight) and switch to a hybrid vocation that isn't normally available to you till after the intro quests that lead to the big city. But you don't have to do that.

Also you can buy an item with rift crystals that lets you completely redesign your character and your main pawn whenever you want. This game doesn't really punish you for making decisions, it encourages experimentation.

Ranger stat growth is pretty balanced, actually - you get 4 physical attack and 3 magic - so just go with what you want to play.

I've been playing Strider and finally got to the first guy to change for a more advanced class, I was thinking if I should become a Ranger or just keep playing strider, I use my bow 50/50 since it does a ton of dmg but I hate how much stamina it uses, So should I go ranger or is strider good enough ? I kinda want to change early so I don't have any problem later if my gear doesn't work for a future vocation.

Every class levels differently. So while the game really doesn't punish you for experimentation too much (and the game is pretty easy to over-level most combat) there still is some risk of leveling into a walled-in niche if you don't switch it up or consider the stat growth at all.

I mean, if you play mage for 90 levels and then decide to be a warrior for endgame... well... it's possible, but you're going to be a bit of a wet-noodle warrior. You'll also have missed out on all the great perks the other classes have access to.

Fortunately for you, stryder is a pretty balanced class for stat growth. They get good gains in stamina and balanced-to-small gains everywhere else. You might consider fighter for 5-10 (if for no other reason than to get access to sinew which allows you to carry more equipment and maintain a lighter encumbrance). Ranger is a very fun class. Longbow is awesome. (thought this is one that really eats up the stamina!)

My advice is switch it up every 7-10 levels and dabble a bit in everything.

I think you should switch to Ranger because it gives you more stamina. If you stay 200 levels with Strider vocation, you'll get a decent character, but that isn't particularly good at anything.

Guys help, it's been forever and I forget how you're supposed to fight
Gazers
, specifically the one on Bitterblack.

Strategy:
Hit the tentacles until the Gazer drops the shield. Then, hit the eye.

I must be fucking crazy here because I'm having a terrible time playing this game. There are way too many annoyances and every skirmish takes way too damn long. Half of the time, it feels like I'm 10 levels under-leveled. AND I switched the difficulty to easy.

I just spent the last hour and a half exploring the region west of Cassardis or whatever the fuck it's called and I had no choice but to stop playing because my left hand started to cramp up. From the palm all the way down to the elbow. That shit has Never happened to me before. I've gone over 12 hours in other games, but putting up with the combat in DD:DA is a humungous hassle. I don't even wanna list all the problems because thinking about it aggravates me. A special shout out for the amount of button mashing involved though.
I'm done with this crap. I honestly don't know how you people put up with it.

Agh... I don't know what to do, I played played about 15+ hours of the original (did not finish the main quest)

Just started a new game in Dark Arisen (because when I first booted the game I was under the impression that this was a DIFFERENT/NEW Game from the original... figured that wasn't the truth when I was having major dejavu in the fishing village)

I want to start over, new Arisen, new pawn (with no "knowledge" from the previous game)

Do I just sync at the in with a new pawn (which syncs and retrieves and overwrites the pawn on the server) then start another new game so when the pawn syncs again it doesn't have any progress to apply to the newest made pawn?

This question is complete mind****....

is there a way to save without entering a new area? i'm stuck on my way to the castle, but everytime i died i have restart all the way from the camp entrance.

it's getting annoying.
