Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen |OT| deep down darkness

Is it just me or does the game look a little bit better compared to vanilla DD? I'm playing on PS3 and am noticing the framerate is a bit better and things look generally sharper.

I definitely notice the higher res textures in places.

And the start menu comes up very quickly now.

You want fighter at level five for the sinew augment, which lets you carry a lot more weight while staying very light. In combination with strider's leg-strength augment, you get access to a hidden ultra-light encumbrance resulting in the fastest movement speed, fastest stamina regen, and lowest stamina consumption rate in the game relative to your character size.

I've got a mage to sorcerer to mystic knight build going now. Can I somehow get that "sinew" upgrade? My guy can barely carry anything once he has his full armor on. What else can I do to increase carrying capacity?

I barely touched the original, so i'll have a ways to go to get to the 'new stuff'.

But I can just switch to fighter anytime and level it to 5 right?

Go down a well? Yeah sure can't see the harm in that...

a few lizardmen? no problem, i'll just take care of these 2 and... HOW MANY FUCKING LIZARD MEN ARE THERE? Shit i swear to god there are at least 8 down there!. I dont know how i did it but i managed to finish that quest first shot. Felt like a boss and a half.

fuck this game is awesome.

Play fighter to level 5 to get access to the sinew augment. My favorite place to level vocations is by the shadowfort in devil fire grove. So many hobgoblins that die fast, give good xp, and the alert other goblins in the area meaning you don't have to travel so much to get to them.

Also, upgrade your gear. It reduces the weight by a bit, and every bit counts. Leveling as a fighter, warrior, or assassin gives you bigger stat gains for strength at the cost of your magic growth.

Character size also affects weight allowance.

Yup. Better sooner than later, IMO.

I just had that quest before I restarted lol. Looking forward to it. Some how I completely missed the mission board in the inn the first time around, good thing I spotted it this time. Just killin rabbits and shit till I go to the encampment.

First impressions of the vanilla DD demo:

- Holy fucking tearing
- Looks surprisingly good otherwise.
- Night is pitch black

Considering picking up Dark Arisen.

Questions:

1. 360 or PS3? I just want the best framerate/IQ. Give it to me straight.
2. The demo was pretty confusing, lots of characters and stuff. Does it start off that way or do you gradually build a party?
3. Is there loot? If so, is it a big part of the game? What kind of loot? Unique stuff?
4. Any other RPG mechanics besides leveling up? Puzzle solving? Just combat?
5. Is there fast-travel? I hate that.

1. 360 has better framerate but more tearing, ps3 has worse framerate but less tearing
2. The beginning is the exact same as the demo. Once you get past the prologue though, it does start over and wean you into things
3. Yes there is loot, weapons, armor, herbs, crafting materials etc.
4. I'm only about 5 hours in so can't comment really.
5. There is a limited form of fast travel. You can't just fly all over the place like Skyrim.

1. You want to read the Dragon's Dogma face-off by Digital Foundry. If Dark Arisen is technically the same, then the 360 has higher framerate than the PS3 version, but suffers from screan tearing. PS3 version is v-synched but suffers from low fps.
2. You start alone, but it's pretty easy to gather pawns in the game. Either online or offline.
3. Yes, hell of a lot. Very rare stuff too.
4. Not sure now. But the game is primarly about combat.
5. You can fast-travel, but it's rather troublesome. You need very rare stuff to fast-travel.

Beaten. I'm so slow.

And when we mean 5, we mean those ranks of the class, right? Not actually gaining 5 levels as the class? How long does it usually take to rank a vocation?

Yeah, I'd like to know this as well. I'm already 36... I don't want to grind up to 41 to get sinew.

Indeed, you don't need 5 levels, just 5 vocation ranks.

You can switch to desired vocation upon leveling for the stat gains then back to Fighter/Whatever to continue ranking up.

For best results kill enemies which grant less than 100 exp.

Everyone's first step upon reaching Gran Soren should be to switch their vocation to warrior and unlock Bastion, then switch back to whatever you want. Top-tier augment (greatly increases physical defense) right off the bat for 900 discipline.

Does anyone notice that on the 360 SKU the pawn's speech volume is extremely low sometimes? It's almost like it was mixed for positional, and when they are behind you it drops their voice volume about 75%.

(This is playing in stereo, of course)

They should make "Dark Arisen version" a search filter in the pawn search. Jeez. I keep resetting the search trying to find ones that I can actually rate/gift.

For what it's worth, I've got a level 23 warrior pawn who has always been a fighter or warrior and has the gryphic victory (very good 2h sword). she's tough and aggressive as hell. feel free. :) I need RC. PSN is "twotimingpete"

I don't think anyone has used my pawn yet :(. At least I don't notice anything after resting at the inn etc... would there be some kind of notification?

There is, but it seems nobody wants your pawn.

Don't worry, my level 109 Sorcerer is feeling unwanted too. :(

Do you ever get used to the fighting? Like the world, but I did a escort quest and wolves did drive by's, goblins stood in between my pawns and the convoy and it was just a general mess. Not to mention fighting harpies with the bow. :)

You'll get used to it. Escort missions are...well, escort missions...But you'll learn to use your skills to bridge the gap pretty quickly.

The pawn rental rate is really low from what I have seen so far.

I was playing vanilla DD up until last week (taking my time with it, only just finished the set of quests from chamberlain and just trekking everywhere - I like to be in unexplored areas when night falls - such a rush). In the original game, every time I stayed at an inn I'd get a bunch of RC and gifts - like, every couple of hours. Since switching to dark arisen, my pawn doesn't seem to have gone anywhere in the 3 nights I've spent playing DA.

Gonna do my part tonight, release the pawns I have, and check out ones from DA players. I think I've still got the ones I hired from the original game. I might as well find some low level pawns and gift them some equipment to clear my storehouse out a bit.

Pretty sure this is a bug. People were using my pawns last week as well, but since starting on DA, no one is.

Yes. Go to the barber shop in Gran Soren. Just found this out myself, thanks to this thread.

Can you change your pawn's voice there? God I hope so. I thought it would be a hoot to make a huge, brawny fighter dude for a Pawn named Beefcake and give him the tinniest male voice. In practice, this sucks, as he sounds like he just huffed 100 helium balloons and it's driving me crazy.

Yes. It's fairly cheap too.

I picked the royal treatment and it let me reset the voice. I tweaked my pawns voice a bunch of times actually - there aren't a lot of speech examples on the choice screen (I think you get like, one line by choosing 'expressions'). I wanted a low, kind of idiotic voice for him but a lot of them ended up sounding like recordings played way too slow once he started talking.

Yeah that could be it. Maybe sometime soon my pawn will roll on up with a sack of RC and rocks for me. Pimpin' ain't easy!

I usually don't play ranged classes, but I'm enjoying Magick Archer too much.

This thing never stood a chance.

I stayed far, far away from that class simply because by the time I was ready to do Everfall, I was just finishing up both the Mage and Sorcerer vocations. Basically my game was finished and I didn't see the point in playing the MA for 1-2 levels and then calling it quits. Due to the very poor stat scaling in vanilla they were unplayable as a damage class, and were more for support. My plan now was to play a Sorcerer to 50 and then make the switch since they supposedly buffed the magic bows. I don't really see the point in leveling up past 100 anyway. People talk about how easy the game becomes...well duh, it's not balanced around 100-200.

On a side note, I remembered the game having some pretty exceptional music, but my god. The battle music is seriously the most hype inducing music for an RPG. Although the new title theme actually makes me miss the old song. At least it had personality. The new song is ultra generic.

I like watching how certain classes are dropped and how others trend. It's like the DD |OT| all over again.

That usually happens when a class goes from somewhat unplayable to potentially decent. I always wanted to try out the MA, but they were just never worth it without X levels of Sorcerer, and it's pointless to me to level up your character so high that everything is trivial. The only reason to do that is if you bother with online Ur. Otherwise, the game stops being remotely challenging after level 75 or so. All of my characters pretty much hit 55-60 by the end of post-game anyway.

I went to the black cat merchant, and he has all these crazy looking weapons and armor for huge amounts of gold, but none of them have decent stats. for instance, my direwolf bow has a strength rating of 90. the "epic shit" for sale here that looks amazing has a strength rating in the 40 to 50 range. what's that about?

About to head to the final battle... not sure if I want to run Ranger or Mystic Knight for the final battle since I can get lots of Dragonforged goodies either way... decisions, decisions...

I know it's all mostly up to me, but between Ranger and Mystic Knight, is one or the other more preferable for Everfall/Bitterblack Isle?

I was supposed to be getting this tomorrow... However, amazon decided to screw up my preorder and I'll only be getting it next week... thanks alot, amazon.

This was asked earlier (and answered). Look at them again and hit X or I guess square if you're on the PS3. The base stats kind of suck, but they are all specialized weapons. Kind of like silver weapons against werewolves. The problem is that you can't really tell just how good they are against specific races compared to just using a much stronger base damage weapon.

I wanted difficult, I finally got difficult. This fucking Ogre has killed me 3 times in a row. I've got him down to his last health bar all three times, but his attacks are insane. I'm a tank but his drop kick attack takes 2900 HP off (or around their, not sure on the specific number). That's bananas for how great my defense is. His grab attack where he eats your face is basically instant death if your pawns don't jar you loose.

I'm kinda glad I'm playing as a Ranger. The first ogre I encountered in BBI took awhile but it was relatively safe because I jumped on top of a ledge and just kept firing arrows.

Man, being a Sorc isn't too fun anymore. The high damage spells aren't doing as much damage as I had hoped and I've hit a huge brick wall. Got to the
giant evil eye
and it just takes so long to damage. My pawns aren't worth for shit either.

Kind of out of areas to go to too so this sucks, :/
