DS Appreciation Thread

Own:

SM64DS
Yoshi Touch & Go (Underrated)
Kirbyds (Overrated)
Meteos
Nanostray (unopened)
Nintendogs Chihuahua
Advance Wars DS (Awesome-o)

Preordered:

Sonic Rush (paid off in full)
Phoenix Wright
ACDS (paid off in full)
Castlevania DS
Lunar DS (though might change to Trauma Center, but I'm not a big fan of Wario Ware type games)
Mario Kart DS (paid off in full)
Super Mario Bros DS
Mario & Luigi 2 (paid off in full)

Looks like a lot, but it didn't cost me much due to some deals going on.

I love my DS. It opens up completly new ways to play games, wich for me is huge. I've been playing games for the same way for so long, I have grown tired of it.

I currently own;

Super Mario64-Everyone is correct. The controls are horrid, when compared directly to the N64 version, but man, the mini-games are worth the price alone. Just today I fired up my DS to play some more Advanced Wars, and SM64 was in it, instead of turning it off, I decided to go for a higher score in the turtle shell bowling, and before I knew it, 2hours had gone by.

Kirby-Man, this game blew me away when I first started playing it. Call it a "tech demo" of what the DS can do. I was actually laughing for the first couple of hours while playing it. It has now grown a little stale, but still fun, and completly different. What I think has happened, is that becuase how kick-ass the play mechanics are, you grow greedy for new gameplay, and start seeing little things Nintendo could have done with the touch screen, and want even more.

Advanced Wars-Just killer. I have seen that alot of people don't like the touch screen controls, but I love em' I still can't believe that some of the music is coming out of my DS. just killer tunes at times. I'm heading over to my brother in-laws tommarow, and me, my bro, and him are going to have an all-day marathon of this game. Can't wait. :)

Nintendogs-Havn't touched it much becuase of Advance wars.

I have a question for everyone who owns Meteos. Is it any good? I love puzzle type games, and I don't want to touch it if it's only okay, becuase nothings worse then a crappy puzzle game, that's addicting.

Meteos is fun. If you're a fan of SSBM, you might find more to like since Sakurai was the director of both games (that sentence may be extremely wrong). Plenty of unlockables and the like.

I just bought a DS only a week or so ago, mainly due because I was waiting for Nintendogs and Advance Wars DS and I give it a rough over quite a lot.

Super Mario 64 is just as good as I remembered - the controls take some getting used to but I'm a natural with the D-pad. The only complaint I have about it is the fact that atmosphere and immersion of the worlds are not as elegant as they were on N64 due in part to the small screen.

The best thing though is knowing that there is a buttload of decent software coming before the end of the year is out so I know I won't be dropping my DS anytime soon.

I'm with you man, the DS is a great little system. It's not for everyone, and yeah it's not as "powerful" as the PSP, but who cares? Fun games are fun games, and the DS is satisfying my just fine in that sense.

I'd get Wario Ware touched, but it's $30+ everywhere! I'm too much a cheap bastard to buy it.

Animaniacs DS

This is the first I've heard of this. Is it a new game or a port?

i'd totally forgotten there was a ds version of zoo keeper. i love that game...though at the same time i don't know if i'd spend $30 on it. :/

and from brief rentals of both games, i liked yoshi's touch and go much more than ds kirby. i guess there are a couple people who agree with me.

There is such an insane amount of games I want to play on my DS, and yet it remains mostly untouched. My thumbs hurt like a motherfucker after 30 minutes use of the buttons. Doesn't go away for days :/ Stylus games are fine.

New design now, please! :/

No positive DS thread is complete without Drinky coming in and calling it an Nbot fanboy circle jerk. Where are you Drinky?!

Back on topic: I'm not much into gaming on the go but the DS is looking too tempting now.

Can anyone tell me what the size of the DS screen is in comparison to the GBA SP? I was thinking of buying a cheap GBA SP but saw that the DS also plays GBA games and I don't want to get a micro because of the microscopic screen.

I own:

Super Mario 64 DS
Wario Ware Touched
Madden 2005(will soon be replaced by Madden 2006)
Need For Speed Underground 2
Meteos
Kirby: Canvas Curse
Star Wars Episode 3:Revenge of the Sith

Owned once, but sold/traded back:
Spider-man 2
Feel The Magic
Asphalt:Urban GT
World Championship Poker

To be honest, i've gotten more enjoyment out of the DS's first year then I did the GBA's.

It's slightly bigger and much more vibrant. Doesn't have that washed-out SP look. Awesome screen for GBA games if you don't mind the black border.

If your only or primary use is going to be GBA games, you should try one out first though. It wreaks havoc with some people's hands when using both pad and buttons at the same time. If that's you, go with an SP instead.

Since the DS's release I've probably been more interested in handheld games than I have ever been. I never got an SP, and getting new batteries for my original GBA and playing it under a light was getting annoying.

Enter my DS. While the going was rough for some three months, I still must say that it was for the better. Now I have some extra money saved up for all the great upcoming games coming out.

I've bought (or been given as gifts)...

Final Fantasy 1 & 2: Dawn of Souls
The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap
Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
Wario World 4
Super Mario 64 DS
Wario Ware Touched!
Polarium
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
GoldenEye: Rogue Agent
Kirby: Canvas Curse
Meteos
Pac N Roll
Nintendogs: Labrador and Friends

since the DS's release last year. I know a couple of those games might not be that great (Polarium to GoldenEye), but I've still played them for hours.

In the near future I can't wait to get...

Jump! Super Stars
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Lunar: Dragon Song
Lost in Blue
Advance Wars: Dual Strike

and I'm definitely picking up some of the great GBA games coming out this year.

Donkey Kong Country 3
Mega Man Zero 4
Gunstar Super Heroes
Dr. Mario/Puzzle League

The DS was a big jump for me from the original GBA. I love it's weird features and like the different games that we've been seeing so far from Feel the Magic 2 and Lost in Blue to the localized Gyakuten Saiban (Ace Attorney) and nongames like Electroplankton.

Owned:

-Wario Ware Touched: Fun as hell, but didn't have the replay of the original game IMO

-Feel The Magic: Same as Wario Ware. Little replay value, but still fun enough.

-Mario 64 DS: Meh. The lack of analog hurt the game. Thumb straps suck. Was never a big fan of Mario 64 anyway.

-Ridge Racer DS: I actually enjoyed the N64 version, so I like this game as well. It's just that Ridge Racers on PSP utterly destroys this game in every way.

-Asphalt Urban GT: Meh. Has some nice tunes, I guess.

Currently own:

-Meteos: Haven't put much time into the game, but it seems like it rocks. The touch screen game play doesn't feel gimmicky like some of the other games do.

-Jump Super Stars: Only played a little bit, but I'm somewhat disappointed in this game. I don't know what it is...I just expected something more out of the game play. I need to play more though.

-Ouendan: Barely touched this game, so the jury's still out on this one. Not as cool to me as Gitaroo Man was, but it's unfair to compare PS2 audio to DS audio. :)

-Castlevania DoS: The only triple A must-buy must-have buy-a-system-for-this game on the DS, IMO. ROCKS. Touchscreen stuff is kind of stupid, though.

I want to buy Nanostray, but unfortunately, I haven't seen it for sale anywhere around where I live (I just moved to a small city in Japan). Wish I had grabbed it in Tokyo when I got my DS.

Ooh, I wanna play this game too!!

Anyone else noticing that these lists are REALLY FUCKING LONG for a system that's only been out 9 months?

For having that shitty five month drought, the DS is shaping up to have one of the best first-year libraries in the history of planet earth.

What exactly are you stuck on? ?_?

If I remember correctly, the menus were in a bizarre order fitting to the art style and I couldn't figure quickly the logic as I usually do with Japanese game menus. I also got a bunch of other games back then, so I kinda forgot BB. I will give it another go, actually, as many seem to insist that it's great.

Amen brother, amen. Seriously, the best system since Super Famicom. Maybe even better.

Sure there are more games I want, but where's the money? :(

Games I Own:
Super Mario 64 DS
Wario Ware Touched!
Yoshi's Touch & Go
Kirby Canvas Cruse
Meteos
Advance Wars: Dual Strike (My Favorite DS game)

Most Wanted:
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
New Super Mario Bros
Trauma Center
Sonic Rush

Don't have a DS yet, but I believe for Christmas I'll be picking one up (maybe one for the little brother as well) and...

Trauma Center: Under the Knife (It's not getting quite enough attention in this thread, imo)
Castlevania
Advanced Wars (Shouldn't it be DS Wars now? Ahh ha ha ha...ha...Ha. Hm.)
Super Mario 64 (never played the original)

And a ton of "maybes/eventualys" along the lines of Mario & Luigi 2, Meteos, Feel the Magic, Wario Ware, Pheonix Wright, Electroplankton, Lunar, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, Kirby Canvas Curse, and more...

I also want another Final Fantasy Tactics. Not really on the DS, but I'd take another FFT any way I could get it.

Whee! Absolutely loving my DS right now. I was skeptical at first, what with the poor launch lineup, but after seeing the upcoming awesomeness at E3 I grabbed one and haven't looked back. So far I've got:

Super Mario 64 DS - my favourite game of all time, and portable? With new stuff? Awesome. The mini-games are seriously fun, too.

WarioWare Touched - love the WarioWare games, this is no exception. My non-gamer friends love this one, too.

Meteos - holy crap, this game is incredible! I've just got it recently and can't stop playing it. The music, the gameplay, numerous unlockables - everything's great!

Jump Super Stars - I've been very impressed by this one, there's so much stuff to unlock so it'll last ages, and the combat is really fun. The koma system is very creative too.

Kirby Canvas Curse - The DS was made for games like this. Clever, fun, addictive, lovely 2D graphics; perfect!

SD Gundam G Generation DS - language barrier is a little high, but I'm still having good fun with this. Closest to a Super Robot Taisen yet on the DS.

Coming in the post soon:

Nintendogs: Dachsund and Friends - what can I say, I'm a sucker for puppies.

Advance Wars DS - Cannot WAIT for this, the GBA games are truly great.

Ouendan - really really excited about this, it looks riotously fun.

Mr Driller: Drill Spirits - picked up the Euro version for cheap, which has the Doristone and single-cart multiplay that were removed from the US version. I love Driller, so looking forward to this one.

Planning to get:

Pheonix Wright: Ace Attorney
Mario Kart DS
Animal Crossing DS
Metroid Prime: Hunters
Lost in Blue
Mario and Luigi 2!!!!!
Trauma Centre
Age of Empires
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow!!!!!

Oh god, my wallet :(

Just got it this week. I love advance wars and meteos. I am also reviewing Pac N' Roll which is brilliant (but short) IMO.

I've got:

Meteos - most intense puzzle game ever
Advance Wars DS - <3
Nintendogs - decent. Requires too much care. It's got its moments.
Ouendan - great game. very funny the first few times through. The music is great and the patterns are really fun in Hard mode.
Band Bros. - fun game, multiplayer mode is very fun, though the MIDI now sounds really obsolete after playing Ouendan. The Famicom medleys are worth the price though :)

Future:
Bleach DS
Castlevania DS
Phoenix Wright
Trace Memory
New Super Mario Bros
Dig Dug DS

someone's going to yell at me for saying this but, don't waste your time.... unless you really liked Iridion 2. I eBayed my copy the day I bought it... though it was *surprisingly* decent for the first 20 minutes I played.

My ds's top screen got 2 huge cracks in it... I'm going to have to pay to get it repaired... fuck :(

$3.95 for a replacement top screen from store.nintendo.com if you live in N. America. Includes the tool to remove the old screen.

I bought mine earlier this summer, and I've been absolutely loving it:

Polarium: This game reminds me of a crossword puzzle; sit on a subway, stare at it and try and figure it out. Can't wait till the new one comes out.

Mario 64 DS: I never played the original on the 64; surprisingly, this game lends itself very well to the "pick up and play" for 10-15 minute mentality.

Kirby: Excellent platformer... first time I turned it on, I just had a huge grin on my face. Very refreshing, and the most fun I've had in a platformer in a while.

Puyo Pop Fever: Awesome puzzler; I played 4 player... that was intense. Can't wait to try 8 player someday...

Meteos: One of the best puzzlers I've played since Tetris. Very original, very intense, and a HELL of a lot of fun.

Also, I wanna pick up:
Zoo Keeper
Wario Ware
Nintendogs
Advance Wars DS (willing to give the series another shot)
Ouedan
Jump Super Stars
Castlevania (can't wait for this one)
Mario Kart
Animal Crossing
Tony Hawk (looks sweet)
Phoenix Wright
New Super Mario Bros.

I usually buy maybe 1 or 2 games a year for a handheld system. This is crazy.
