DS Worldwide 2004 shipments increased to 2.8 million

They're shipping 4.2 million before the end of the calendar year now? Why?

If the DS sales stay high, I wonder how much their end of year earnings will increase. It was already projected at $875 mil at the 5 million shipment mark for the DS.

With shipments increased in the US and Japan, where does this leave Europe?

Edit: Silly question. i misread the text. It's late.

Nintendo Ups DS Console Shipment Target
December 09, 2004 01:46:00 AM ET

By Yukari Iwatani Kane

TOKYO (Reuters) - Nintendo Co. Ltd. raised its 2004 shipment target for its DS handheld video game device by 40 percent to 2.8 million units on Thursday after many stores in Japan and the United States sold out in the first week of sales.

``Due to increased demand, we're now making an effort to increase our Nintendo DS production by expediting the manufacturing schedule and making shipments by air so we can get more product into the U.S. and Japan by year-end,'' Nintendo President Satoru Iwata told reporters at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan.

``Between the two countries, I believe Nintendo will be able to increase total shipment by 800,000 units at least. In other words, the Japanese and U.S. shipments of DS will exceed 2.8 million units by the end of December,'' he said.

Nintendo's long-awaited DS, about the size of a paperback book and with two screens, one of which is touch-sensitive, went on sale in Japan a week ago for 15,000 yen ($144) and in the United States on Nov. 21 for about $150.

The company had said it expected to ship 2 million units by the end of 2004 and 5 million units worldwide by the end of its business year in March 2005. Iwata did not change the company's shipment forecast for the business year.

He reiterated that Nintendo planned to launch DS in Europe by the end of March and that it aimed to increase production to about 1.5 million units per month after April.

``During peak periods, it may be necessary to boost production to 2 million units per month on a temporary basis,'' Iwata said, referring to seasonal fluctuations in game device sales.

Iwata said more than 90 percent of shipped DS units in the United States had already been sold, while a number of retailers in Japan ran short just four days after launch. The company said this week it had sold over a million units of the DS in Japan and the United States by Dec. 5.

Nintendo faces a formidable rival on Sunday when Sony Corp. launches its PlayStation Portable (PSP) machine in Japan at 19,800 yen. Sony is vying for a cut of the handheld game market, which Nintendo now dominates.

in other words

old shipment target 2004 = 2 million units worldwide
new shipment target 2004 = 2.8 million units worldwide

Wait, I'm confused. 2M was previously planned to ship to JP. 1M to America. Then America got bumped to 1.4... so isn't that 3.4 worldwide for 2004 now?

2 millions were the shops request.

4.2 million.

No, you're making the mistake that Johnnyram just fixed. Japan's shipment hasn't been upped to 2.8Mil. That's worldwide for 2004. Read the full article pasted in here, that had the bold part.

No, it looks like it's 2.4 million worldwide... but I can't edit my thread title.

They only shipped 1.2 million to NA and JP combined to begin with?

EDIT: :lol, woops.

I'm making all sorts of errors tonight. :(

At launch, yeah. DS sold 500K in japan and america in their first weeks, and that was about 90% of the shipments, so yeah... that's 1M-1.2M shipped for launch.

Math is fun.

The only important number is:

Between the two countries, I believe Nintendo will be able to increase total shipment by 800,000 units at least

800 000 on top of the previous worldwide number.

Dec. 9 (Bloomberg) -- Nintendo Co., the world's biggest maker of hand-held game machines, raised its shipment forecast for its new handheld console by 40 percent for this year on demand from the U.S. and female gamers in Japan.

``We're seeing some production shortages,'' Iwata said. ``We are constantly feeding the market. Due to the increased demand we are making shipments by air.''

Nintendo, which gets 62 percent of its sales from hand-held games and consoles, is winning over older gamers and women with new features such as the console's touch-sensitive screen ahead of rival Sony Corp.'s Dec. 12 entry into the estimated $4 billion hand-held game market.

Female membership of Club Nintendo, linked to the company's Web site, rose 7 percent since the product's debut in Japan on Dec. 2, Iwata said without providing absolute figures. The ratio of members over age 19 rose to 59 percent from 49 percent, he said.
