So I've put about 12 hours into this so far, and...I don't know. I guess I don't hate it. It's definitely a HUGE step up from DW6/DW6E. But it feels like for every good thing Koei did with DW7, they did something bad as well. I love the return of the Charge system, the greatly expanded Story Mode, and the return of several elements from DW4, which is my favorite in the series. However I feel like a lot of the changes were made at the expense of replayability. From what I've played of Conquest Mode so far (which, admittedly, isn't a whole lot), it just doesn't do for the replayability of the game what Free Mode and the freedom to select your character in Story Mode did in previous games.
The weapon and seal system also seems a bit mishandled. I played through Shu's Kingdom Mode first, then started Wu's. And now with Wu, I have all the ridiculously powerful weapons and seals I had acquired with Shu. So now I'm absolutely plowing through stages with no trouble at all with Sun Jian/Sun Quan due to having swords that are far stronger than the ones I SHOULD be using at that point, not to mention having seals like Attack Up +++ and Defense Up ++. I mean, I can do a single Musou and obliterate four officers at once. And while that does feel awesome, it also makes things disappointingly easy. Honestly I think I'm going to be sorta forced to play Wei's Kingdom Mode on Hard once I get around to it.
I also think that they should have made you earn Seals separately for each character. By the time I finished Shu's Kingdom Mode, I had Seals like Attack/Defense Up ++. Yet I DIDN'T have Attack/Defense Up +. But since I already have ++ (and +++, where Attack is concerned), what's my motivation, aside from a trophy, to get the less powerful ones? The Seal system, overall, is almost identical to Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2's Skill system. Certain mobile suits would give your pilot certain skills when used, which encouraged you to use multiple MS'. However, these skills didn't carry over to other pilots, so you'd have to get them again if you changed pilots, which I think did a lot to add to replayability.
Seals also sorta seem to have made your characters stats completely unimportant. It almost feels like, who cares if your character has a relatively low attack skill, or lower speed. Just throw an Attack Up +++ or Walking Speed Up seal on them and go to town. Or in the case of attack power, just give them a stupidly powerful weapon. It kinda makes the Attack/Defense Up items you get from fallen officers feel needless.
As for the whole "cloned characters" debate...honestly I don't mind it nearly as much as I thought I would. The unique Musou attacks and (mostly) unique EX attacks do a lot to differentiate the characters. And even though any character can use any weapon, I really haven't felt the need to use anything other than a character's EX weapon. Hell, I barely even use secondary weapons. I know you're sorta supposed to, to get the most out of the combat system, but really I haven't felt any need to. So far, things have been easy enough with just the main weapons. Maybe once I start playing on higher difficulty levels I'll take advantage of the system more often.
Then there's the online play. It's...not really that great, honestly. I played a few stages with dragonflys545 from GAF and there were HUGE sync issues. Simply put, what you see your partner doing on your screen is in NO WAY representative of what's actually happening. In several instances, I'd defeat an officer only to be told that dragonflys545 defeated him, even though on my screen, he was halfway down the field from where I was. I usually really hate the stigma that Japanese developers just can't implement online play well, but in this case it's unfortunately true.
Really, I'm a bit torn on how to feel about DW7. I'm honestly having great fun with Kingdom Mode. It's nice to see the story of the Three Kingdoms play out properly, instead of having things like Sun Jian being alive through the entire conflict happening. But once I finish all four Kingdom Modes and maybe go through Conquest Mode once, I don't know how often I'll come back to the game. Granted, clearing all four KM scenarios and unlocking the full map in CM is probably going to take quite a long time, but there's something to be said for just having the comfort of knowing that if I wanted to do something like take Xing Cai through Hulao and Sishui Gate, or play through Story Mode with a friend, I could. For the most part, I like what we got, but I greatly miss what we lost.
(Wow, that was really long. Guess I had a lot more to say about DW7 than I thought. :lol)
