The only EA games I have bought this generation are Mass Effect 2 and Mirror's Edge, so I don't have enough fire built up to write a good rant about them. Plus it's bed time :p. I look forward to reading the down and dirty vitriol that I know is brewing in some people later from this thread. G'night!

Mirror's Edge was a sale bomb for the most parts and I don't think they expect the sequel to move (much).

Battlefield 3 has the potential to hit the 6+ million units (where is it at) that CODBOps has sold.

They even had a ME ipad/iphone game... I'm going to guess btw the actual sales of ME + iOS, EA had enough data to decide not to go ahead with ME2.

There is nothing surprising about the decision.


+ the shooter/FPS/wargame market is a lucrative market that EA wants to get into. Is all.

I know EA owns Theme Park, but who owns Theme Hospital? Also doesn't SEGA have the rights to Theme Tower?

I am not sure anyone really hates EA.

They often do good work.

They're just kind of dicks. And people are calling out the dickish parts, the incompetent parts, the ravenously gluttonous parts, because that's better than "How awesome is this corporation BEFORE YOU ANSWER THE ANSWER IS SO AWESOME I BET YOU DIDN'T SEE THAT COMING"

I think Snuggler hit it on the head when he said that the problem is that he actually likes a lot of EA's games.

Namco is about the biggest scam company going, but people like almost none of their games, so no one really cares.

Ubisoft had horrendous PC DRM, but it didn't cause that much of a stir in the long run because they barely put anything out worth playing on PC.

Capcom gets tons of hate, but that largely stems from people actually liking Capcom's games and being upset when they head off in a direction they hate or start getting scam like DLC. Square Enix gets lots of hate as well, but how many people go around bashing Konami anymore?

"I like their games, I'm not a big fan of their practices/policies". That seems to be the sentiment being echoed by the majority (so far). To sum it all up, it's a love/hate relationship. I can understand that.
 
I have so much to say on this topic but I just finished work and now I'm traveling and using iPhone and typing A distinct argument sucks.

I'd just like to quickly say to op. You said you're a gamer not an employee or a shareholder so yr arguments about their business practices are ironic.

From my perspective ea are awesome. They are funding some of the biggest and best game series that I like to play. Shouldn't u focus on the quality of the games which as a whole (going by meteoritic ugggg) their level of quality has been improving.

Nothing in my opinion involves madden because I'm an Australian.

Actually, Ubi has some pretty important and popular PC games under their brand: Anno, Settlers, Heroes of Might & Magic, Silent Hunter and Trackmania (without mentioning Ass Cred versions and so), so it kinda sucks, luckily they have toned down the ridiculous DRM.

About the topic, is pretty sad seeing how EA is burning out much of the good will they got past years. They still have good initiatives (EA Partners) and a solid catalogue, but they are pushing so many bad moves. Frankly, what irks me more of EA right now is their stupid management of their past catalogue and their no less stupid position about Steam (which is absurd given how they are partners with Valve for the physical distribution of their games.) I don't care much about their (terrible) marketing team.
 
EA has been mostly good this generation, until the last few weeks where they managed to fuck up Dragon Age 2, released an ok but not that great Shift 2. They really pushed these two waaay too hard just so they could be released before the end of the fiscal year.

Nah, I don't really agree with the OP too much. His preorder "rant" applies to EVERYONE. infamous special attacks from A/B/C... etc etc. Lots of companies do this. Its how its going to go going forward.

His 2nd big rant. Re: marketing. You know what. They were memorable and even the bad ads - well, warranted a lot of media/attention. Even bad press might be good press. The negative attention (if it is) that is no worse than THQ/Gamestop and the ballons incident.

He didn't even mention the killing of some studios in the past. That'd be the biggest problem of EA of old.

I don't think it's going to far to assume the fallout from Dragon Age 2 played a big part in the creation of this thread. Not that, that isn't fair or anything, but I mean, come on: We're not here because EA tacks pre-order bonuses on to their games. We're just not. That's an industry-wide offense (or standard depending on how you feel). We're also not here because EA's had a few dumb ad campaigns (which, in my opinion, if you're on NeoGAF, you're not a part of the target audience for those ads to begin with). Perhaps the OP should've been structured better. I understand the sentiment, but the argument could use some better examples.

Yet EA as a business screws over EA as a creator of games.

Again, Dragon Age 2 is an absolutely perfect example. We have what is basically the closest you can come to confirmation in this industry with people who worked on DA2 saying "Yeah, EA basically rushed us to release this game immediately."

You can't just arbitrarily separate the two. If they could sell you a disc with nothing on it for $60 and it would make more money than lose it, then they would, without a shadow of a doubt.

Long story short: If you buy used, going online will cost you $10 per used game you want to take online.

Like buying a grill on Craigslist and then the guy e-mailing you afterward and telling you he will sell you the gas knob for cheap.
 
EA tried not being assholes, and all it got them was red ink. I guess they figured going back to what they know best is better?

I'll never understand why more people don't get this. I have no problem with the online pass thing.

I did get screwed on the Dr. Pepper DLC for BC2, which they decided to make exclusive to the 360. Of course they never mentioned that.

Also, EA pissed me off by putting DICE on the MP for MOH as opposed to new maps that weren't just being unlocked from the disc. At least they didn't charge for the maps already on the disc...now there is a decent amount of actual new content for the game, but it took way too long for it to come out.
 
EA's VIP pass system for Bad Company 2 really bothered me at first, but simply for buying the game new, I got what must have been around 20-30 bucks worth of free maps that could have been charged for like Call of Duty and Halo does.

Or maybe they realized that they couldn't get away with charging 20-30 bucks for maps like Bungie or Activision do. They could try, but it would ultimately split the community and possibly lead to a dwindling player count.


I dunno, maybe I'm cynical, but I have a hard time praising someone for not megafucking me just because they can't get away with megafucking me. I don't hate the practice, but it has nothing to do with kindness of the heart. If they could, no doubt they would.
 
This thread sucks. I love EA.

They sell new games here like Mass Effect 2, Dead Space, Crysis or whatever it is they're publishing for like $30. They throw useless launch parties and shit and are generally pretty good to us.

$30 games all day everyday.

So you're saying the divide would be bigger with Battlefield than with Halo or CoD? What, are BF fans not as loyal or something?
 
I do not agree, I would say yes if this topic was 3 years ago, but this company opened up and changed in a good way with less titles and more quality, and respect for the developpers.
Was also a good move to had Jef Green on board as a communitymanager and showed some insides.
The company which F%"# around is Activision.
 
I'd say they've put out $15 worth of BC2 DLC that wasn't charged for, aside from Vietnam and the shitty co op mode. The vast majority of the VIP maps were already on the disc, and the truly new stuff came way too late. Honestly my complaint is more the lack of new content. It is nice to not have the community splintered.

From EA's perspective, then yes you should. They don't ever see any money from a used sale, and having DLC and project 10 dollar running is a way for them to at least get some money of the used sale.

And if you really want to support the developer, publisher and IP of the game you're buying, you should buy new.

OP is 100% right, but Activision is still worse.

Really, there aren't any "good" large publishers out there anymore. Outside of the niche publishers (Atlas, XSEED etc), Sony and Nintendo (though they suck for different reasons), they're all largely the same.
