Earthbound Beginnings |OT| From Onett to Podunk in 20 years!

If I was home and had access to my Wii U right now, I would have bought this in an instant.

Really glad this actually happened today. I'm very happy right now.

I'm really interested in playing this but...

Is it going to be ridiculous unforgivable hard?

It's an NES RPG. It's slow, the encounter rate gets annoying real quick, and you need a lot of grinding to take on some of the later areas... But it's not really "hard" per se.

Don't be ashamed to look up game maps at any point. Especially if you get to Duncan's Factory...

Is this going to be translated to pal 5 or are european countries not called UK fucked again like with Earthbound on the virtual console getting only an english release?
Edit, oh it was released today.
Anyone in europe has download it already?

Kinda weird, yeah. It's the only NES game outside of Duck Hunt (And that's understandable, given how Duck Hunt controls) to be released on Wii U VC and not 3DS. It's a shame, because I think it'd be infinitely more tolerable on a handheld with savestates.
Pac-Land is not on 3DS VC either, which oddly enough is also an import.

So question. Is it the censored version? Because I noticed it's rated T for "Violent References, Suggestive Themes, Crude Humor".

Figured that while I don't know if I'll get around to this (maybe it can be my summer RPG. How long is it?), I still bought it because I want to support the fact Nintendo finally brought it out after all these years.

...........so uh, think this could mean they could so the same for Star Fox 2 on SNES? Please?

You can run!!! Was that in the original? Oh who cares.... I can run!!!

Running was not in the original Japanese release, it was added in this unreleased localization. (and Japan's GBA port of the game, which took many features from the unreleased localization, like the character endings, if I recall correctly.)

I still haven't played Earthbound. When it finally came to Europe in 2013 I didn't have a WiiU at the time so I never got it. But now with this and potentially Mother 3, I can't see why I shouldn't get into it now. I don't know much about specifics about what translation this is using, I presumed that they did this in house recently. Unless this is an old build that was never released (edit: apparently that's what this is).

Should I play this first or Earthbound? I can see playing M2 first would make it jarring to go back and play M1. But is M1 worth playing before I play M2?

And what is the price for UK and EU?

I remember this game being pretty tough, lots of grinding necessary, and some long stretches with a sense of very little tangible stuff going on. That doesn't mean I think it's awful or hated it or anything, it's just a product of its time.

Music is top notch. I'm glad people will be getting to hear the genesis of those great Melee music tracks that confused everyone so many years ago. :)

I am going to buy this game this week; of that I have no doubt. I do however wish that it was on the Wii and not Wii U. NES on Wii U VC is shit.

I still don't know how I am going to play this game, but on Wii U would be the last restore. A game this amazing deserves far better than a blurry filtered, stretched mess.

Had a rough time with Mother 1 the first time I played it, but I've grown to appreciate it more and more every time I replay it. It's difficult, but if you take the time to learn what all of the PSI abilities and items you have access to do, you can get through it with a minimal amount of grinding. You can't just mindlessly hit the "Attack" button like you can with more modern RPGs.

From what I've heard it seems like it's okay to start with Earthbound. But I haven't played the original (that will change this week!!!), so hopefully someone who's already played both can come in and give you a more certain answer.

Just started playing. The 80's jrpg grind is strong from the get go! Best not to cross that first bridge before getting the heal spell at lvl 3, but visit mom for free healing until then while beating on hippies and snakes!

In some ways it already feels a but too similar to earthbound, opening in your identical house fighting lamps and dolls...and the music!

Really digging it in its first hour, grind and all. Been awhile since I've touched a classic turn-based jrpg.

Oh, I didn't know about its history. This is great.

So maybe, I should be hoping for starfox 2? :p

StarFox 2 is a little more complicated:

- The ROM on the net is unfinished and is fan translated, at that
- It's unknown whether or not the mastered ROM that does exist is even in english
- There's the whole issue of the Super FX chip and whether or not they can emulate itproperly, or if they'd have to jump through legal hoops to emulate it, given how the chip came to be.

But hey, we now live in a world where you can buy the first two EB games in America on Virtual Console. Anything's possible.

What the fuck? How long has this been a thing? I know I've been out all weekend but still, how the hell did I miss THIS?

I don't have a Wii U or I'd support this. Its a great game though, one of my favorite NES jrpgs. I actually prefer it to Earthbound in a few ways.

True, I can see the game going up and costing $10 like Earthbound and I would be fine with that if that had to cover fees involved with emulating the FX2 chip.

They just announced it and released it today.

You can start from any, though I'd suggest playing them in order. Or at least okay mother 3 after earthbound. Earthbound Beginnings can be played after those two If you think the difficulty may turn you off.

Is the first SF game on the VC?

Star Fox 2 was actually finished and nintendo have the finished rom. the leaked roms are from the earlier versions.

That's great advice, but maybe you should quote the person who originally asked the question? They might not see this otherwise.

Just considering Star Fox 1 and Yoshi's Island, they should get the FX chip emulated. Those are big parts of Nintendo's legacy that should be out there.

Then throw on Star Fox 2, because why not?

I know ill probably never complete it, but I am so excited to be able to own this in a legitimate fashion

Bring on Mother 3!!

It isn't as strong of a game, no doubt about it. I think it is worth playing since it has the same things you'd live in Earthbound.

I feel pretty shitty about it. :(

Much rougher around the edges. Difficulty spikes are ridiculous, especially towards the end. Expect an old-school grind in some spots and a lot of dying.

The music is heavenly and is the only thing that's on par with EB IMO.

Can't wait to see how many people give up at Mt. Itoi.

Kinda impressive for an NES RPG as far as scope goes, but it's incredibly grindy (Even moreso that EB/M2's opening hours) and a definitely a step back in a lot of ways. It's still interesting to see where the series started, though.

As pointed out above, the soundtrack is fantastic, too.

Mechanically it has not aged well, but IMO this game has a story that rings the truest to the entire franchise.

It is nowhere as good as the fantastic Mother 2, but it is not a bad game either.

Thanks for the replies guys, I think I'll buy it eventually but I don't think I'm in any hurry
