But then a funny thing happened. Gallo went back into the editing room and cut 26 minutes of his 118-minute film, or almost a fourth of the running time. And in the process he transformed it. The film's form and purpose now emerge from the miasma of the original cut, and are quietly, sadly, effective. It is said that editing is the soul of the cinema; in the case of "The Brown Bunny," it is its salvation.

BULLSHIT BULLSHIT!!

I don't know. I have not seen the movie, yet, but close to 30 min of film can transform a movie. Besides didn't you read that interview where they made up.

Their social relationship doesn't change the fact that Ebert called The Brown Bunny the worst film at Cannes ever. That's quite a massive u-turn regardless of the cut footage.

cutting/rediting a film tends to cause massive U Turns. A thirty minute cut is humongous. Especially when the major complaints were that it dragged on and on and on.

most movies are truly made in the editing room. Case in point, Raiders of the Lost Ark was supposed to be somewhat weak when Michael Khan made the first cut and it was only until Lucas recut the film did it become great.

ebert is a haux. anyone recall the 100% complete u turn he pulled on that cartoon movie 2 years ago. something about mars or whatever ( the hero was blonde). anyway he first called it one of the worst movies of the year then his dvd review it is a great movie with completely opposite remarks and critisisms. first the characters didnt have emotion in facial expressions and then he says THEY DID?

ebert is a tool of bribery. i dont know what else it could be.

Actually, Ebert is a true lover of cinema. He's one of the few mainstream critics who truly engages film -- his fable row with Gallo being just one of his many dalliances with filmmakers and their work.

Props to him for revisiting and revising his opinion of the film.

Being able to admit you were wrong...or validate why you were right is a true gift.

Agreed...being able to admit you're wrong is a rare quality, so I can't knock him for that. More power to him I say.

Yep...and haven't many people said that the extra 15 minutes in T2 could've taken it down from great to merely good?

Ultimately, I think it's always cool seeing two parties burying a hatchet. It's even cooler when they can joke about it.
