Edge: PS4 to launch in Europe in early 2014, US/JP 2013, more powerful than next Xbox

3 months is not going to determine 8-10 year generation. Launching early 2014 in Euro is fine especially since it's Sony's strongest territory.

I honestly think EU + US is more important than US + JP. A WW launch, even with shortages, is much better than missing the holiday season and COD+FIFA in EU. I don't think they'll have any significant franchises for the JP market in Japan, at least not during launch period. Maybe GT6P, but that'd be bigger in EU anyways.

The amount of people in here who think Sony can just throw in a few more RAM chips and assume it'll magically work.

8GB seems too expensive? Well, let's just go for 5 or 6 instead since that doesn't require a complete overhaul.

You can always get an xbox this year if getting a next gen console means that much to you (assuming they do a WW launch this year). You can then pick up a PS4 later next year.

It's not that point, in any case I can't afford 2 console. I'm tired europe will be the last in the party; it's thanks to this country if ps3 is survived & this is the sony appreciation? I hope xbox will dominate again in US, so they can to learn to push in the stronger market than the weaker. Really a stupid idiot move.

Well I'm an expert on Japanese culture, if Sony doesn't release in their homeland first, every japanese gamer will be offended and they'll just turn their back on Sony and buy the Xbox Infinity. So Japan has to be served first, they simply don't have a choice!

Not sure if serious, when did wii u launch in japan again?.

Every . Console . They . Have . Ever . Made.

People are fooling themselves to think this would be any different.
I'm not thrilled about the idea, but it was obvious, so hardly worthy of complaint.
Dude, that is simply not an argument. Every console nintendo ever made was released first in Japan;

...and then came the Wii-U and Japan got it last

Seems i will go for PS4 this generation and wait to see if Fable 4 makes it to PC

If not i may consider a xbox 720

The problem with xbox is that they no longer support JRPGs like Lost Odyssey and Fable is known to be going on PC (same for Alan Wake)

I think i may skip xbox 720 altogether if it does not do multipltforms better than PS4

how can they say the sources say it's more powerful "on paper" but they have knowledge of both systems. if it's really "slightly" more powerful then there's no need to say "on paper".

Ps3 was more powerful "on paper" but in reality paper specs aren't the best way to determine real world performance

well, supposedly ps3 cost $800-$900 to produce and Sony eat the $300 losses. maybe ps4 will cost about $600-$700 to produce and Sony eat the $200 losses with expectation that manufacturing cost will come down very quick?

I don't know what I'm talking about here

Most people are expecting Sony to be much more conservative when it comes to the amount lost on each system. They aren't in a good financial situation, and they are no longer the dominant gaming company. I'm expecting something $399 and a cost of only $40-50 more than that, if that.

I think he means that if the PS4 is priced at $349 by Sony before it is released, they could include 4GB more RAM and change the price to $379 instead.

ah, okay. that makes a lot more sense. it's an interesting point, but I think the i$350 price point is ever so slightly unrealistic. I expect both machines to come in at $400.

Because things have changed since then, we now get things day and date with the us or not long after. Look at all the new hardware that comes out you wont see many with months and months of gaps.

That's just not true at all.

Software aside - which still has different release dates in many cases for EU, The last hardware they released (the super slim) isn't even available in the same configurations across territories. The last console they released (the Vita) was out earlier in Japan and the US.

Nothing has changed at all. They still roll out by territory.

See above man, there is no evidence to suggest things have changed no?
It is wishfull thinking.

If Sony launches in the UK 2014 and Microsoft in 2013 then my next gen purchasing decision is a lot easier. It's hard to believe that Europe is loyal to Sony at all.

Europe isn't the stronger market though. Sony would be wise to launch in the US first, or at least make that a priority, since that is the strongest market.

That region is generally considered Sony-land, so it's to be expected IMO.

Neither MS or Sony are going to take huge losses this time around. Look at how slow they are price dropping 7 year old machines. Sony comes out with a super slim and increased the price lol. These are modest machines made to sell at 399.99 with out a large loss. If it was going to be sold at 200 dollar loss we would be seeing a much more powerfull system.

Is Kinect really that successful? No one I know has it, nor is interested in it.

A weak hardware with Kinect doesn't really make me hyped.

A new Share button on the controller will, when pressed, launch a new feature that will allow screenshots and video to be distributed online. The PS4 hardware will continually record the most recent 15 minutes of onscreen action (with no processing penalty, claims our source), which users will then be able to edit and broadcast via the Internet.

Standard 720P @ 30 FPS, confirmed? Super cool feature if its at the game's native res and framerate, though.

Guys hey... guys.. read the article. To me, even though I'm a hype whore, reads that the 4GB of GDDR will match up with the 8GB of DDR in terms of the capacity gap. Otherwise they could of just said the PS4 will have 8GB of memory.

For sony it is. & if sony hope to dethrone xbox in us, I laugh. It's not better delay in japan than in eu? wiiU is a disaster in this country & they hope to do better?

Im not just talking about sony im talking on the whole, ms roll out pretty much ww, even nintendo its weeks between, vita was also pretty close if im not mistaken between us and eu launch. To have a few month gap is bonkers and could cost them in the region.

Someone explain that please.

G is for graphics because it's mainly used in video cards.

Not sure what people mean by saying that GDDR5 is "dying out."

GDDR5 is a fast, high-bandwidth type of memory that's based on DDR3, which is used in desktops.

DDR4 is a new type of memory with more dramatic design changes.

Says hello...

I'm not THAT tech savvy.

Man it would be awesome if it was the same type of ram, but I highly doubt it due to price concerns. And even if "technically" the fast ram at 4gb is better, the average gamer doesn't know that. I mean to this day people still think the ps3 had 256. So in the end its probably the right move.

Sony's advantage on paper for the PS3 was held back for a long time because it used an esoteric architecture that had limited documentation.

Now both the PS4 and Nextbox are pretty similar in design thus making the paper specs a bigger deal than they were this gen. This is assuming the rumours turn out to be true and Sony did step up in the dev tools department.

That's what i ment by numbers game.

Whether it's successful in the long term is another question, but Kinect was the fastest selling consumer electronics product of all time. Faster than the iPad! It think it's probably at ~20 million units now.

BruceLeeRoy's report and Edge's report are not matching up pertaining to RAM. I wonder what will happen....

I said it's probably something close. In fact it doesn't even have to be all GDDR5. Another half could be DDR3.

We'll find out soon. :)

How would you do that? It's an APU, so you can put only one type of memory. If it's DDR3 it will be all DDR3, if it's GDDR5 it will be all GDDR5.

Will anyone be upset if it launches at $399? Seems like there is a lot of good will or optimism towards PS4 and price may be the only potential hang up. Anything 400 or below would be great imo.

indeed. I'd love to see it.

I'm not so sure. nearly two holidays without competition? come on, you really think that wouldn't affect their marketshare to any significant degree?

it's going to be 4gb gddr5. there won't be any ddr3. you and others have completely misinterpreted the article. read it again.

I think he got the point the first time, but by all means revel in your superiority for not letting hype get to you
