6 GB of GDDR5 would be pretty amazing, what's the word on the RAM situation atm? Too late to add DDR3 (mobo design/heat/architecture issues), so I guess adding more GDDR5 is the only solution?
no matter what, North America has to go first. They are the most consumer hungry market out of the regions that actually buys stuff despite of economic hardships.
Better release before Blackfriday and see madness next November lol
Sony should launch in NA and EU first. And JPN last, the Japanese prefer their handhelds anyway, plus I have a feeling most games will be western games anyway just like games of this generation.
Well, based on PS3's six years of system sales; NA - 22 million, EU+UK - 37 million (32/5), I'd say it's obvious the european continent is more profitable for Sony. There's no way 22 million users would buy more than 37 million.

If it can add even 2GB of GDDR5 RAM, bringing the total up to 6GB, then they will pretty much blow the Durante out of the water.
lol. you mean durango? Durante is the poster here that made that dark souls fix.

nextgen console with 8GB will inevitably have a big OS pool
i think devkit can use OS pool for dev tools, big OS pool is manly empty buffers
What if he DID mean Durante, and what if Sony IS coming for him? :Olol. you mean durango? Durante is the poster here that made that dark souls fix.
I can't wait to see what Durango's actual RAM situation really is. Anyone who thinks MS is going to let Sony completely dominate them in the memory department has another thing coming.
It is no coincidence that MS has been working so closely with Epic, Crytek and all the other RAM whores for building their next-gen system from the ground up.
I expect both systems to have extremely similar performance, albeit achieved in a slightly different way.

As of now I don't see why not.Could the PS4 launch in early October in order to have a second wave of consoles produced before Black Friday? I don't know much about how long it would take to make a new console.
What's up with all the sudden Kaz avatars? anyways it's too late to up the RAM IMO I guess Sony is referring to lowering the OS footprint and improving the PS4's dev tools so that the devs can utilize as much of the RAM as possible.

What I was saying is that in the US, people would vote with their wallets and just not buy the system if it was delayed.
Yeah but it's best to believe Sony wouldn't want to make such a last minute move and risk a delay or bad yields since the Durango and Orbis are both rumored to be pretty much the same damn thing spec wise.didn't the 360 up the ram at the last minute?
it would be nice just from a hardcore gamer perspective, but 4 gigs of GDDR5 is way more than anyone will need to make great games- it's only good for future proofing. But who here wants the ps4 sticking around more than 5 years anyway? I don't want to repeat this gen again ever- it went on long enough.
4 gigs of GDDR5, get it out the door, and give me Ps5 in 2018 or 2019.
this is where I fear sony may have jumped the gun a little. announcing a new console so soon, could see their ps3 sales falter considerably and when your next gen machine isn't out for upwards of 9 months (or less / move), that's never a good thing to happen.

Nah, it's not the same target audience. The people currently buying PS3s are not looking to buy a PS4 any time soon. PS2 sales didn't drop off a cliff after 2005 when PS3 was announced, in fact Xmas 2005 was one of the strongest ever for PS2!
If Sony get the strategy right and push a price cut at E3 for PS3 and announce PS4 with no b/c in built then PS3 sales aren't really going to suffer.

PCs are being replaced by tablets and major PC CPU manufacturers like Intel/amd would want to deter the the paradigm shift by coming up with beefed up CPU/GPU specs in the future
4g wont be enough if SONY is pushing 4K and SONY always has the habit of pushing a new tech with their console releases
with 8g GDDR5, they can dominate gaming scenario for years and also they can fortify their goals of making people switch to 4K TVs
Uh, both the Playstation and the Playstation 2 had delayed launches in the US that missed Christmas. The original Playstation ended up delayed like 9 mo. They did alright.
4gigs of GDDR5 is more than enough for 4K gaming and video.

and that's on a gaming PC. On a closed system where you can squeeze every last ounce of performance out of your hardware, performance would likely be even better.
PS1 launched in September and PS2 launched in October. All home systems in the US in the last 20 years have launched in September, October, or November. The last home system that didn't launch in those three months in the US was the Sega Saturn and we all know how that turned out.
4GB of GDDR5 is already very expensive. 8GB would most likely be another crazy price jump scenario.

cost between the two?
I could be wrong but I remember reading here that 4 GB of GDDR5 memory wasn't even possible in consoles until this year duo to motherboards capacity or something like. 8 GB of GDDR5 will be very hard to achieve.

No. It had to do with density going up per chip from 256MB to 512MB
PS1 was a December 3rd launch held back until the next September for the US.
So they will need to up the chips again to 1gig per each for 8GB right? Is that even possible?
IIRC, it will be around $15 (maximum) per GB of GDDR5. Problem is that it is not as simple as that. Heat dissipation system and integrating them to an already crowded motherboard would add to the cost to a point where the venture may be seen as prohibitive. Still, you never know what Sony really intends to do.

that might be true since consoles are closed system but what if you want to have ultrarealistic graphics with 1000s of things on screen???
the link you specified took into consideration the games which have been released already like BF3 and none of those games were made with 4k res specifically in mind
To make a console future proof, i think SONY should add another 4g ram . after all they are not making huge investments on GPU/CPU /media like BD when ps3 came out
The only region where they would be making investments would be a motherfucking for incorporating 16 nodules of GDDR5 and an additional 4g GDDR which might cost them an extra 40$-60$
So basically 360 > PS4?Microsoft just issued a response to Polygon in regard to Sony's February 20 event:
We welcome innovation in the category. It's an amazing time for the industry, and an even better time for Xbox 360 owners. At Xbox, we're focused on making the content you love even more amazing including blockbuster games, and new entertainment experiences. We're always thinking about what's next for our platform, but we don't have anything further to share at this time.
So basically 360 > PS4?
Don't they have blockbuster games?"blockbuster games"
Did Microsoft really say this?
