Yep. This is the most likely what that means.I still think that sounds like the 2GB GDDR5 --> 4GB GDDR5 jump that Sony has (supposedly) already made.
"Importantly, we’ve learned that Sony has told developers that it is pushing for the final PS4 RAM to match up to Microsoft’s 8GB."
My reading. They want the PS4 RAM to match up to the Microsoft RAM. How does it need to match it? The speed? The size? Power consumption?
I don't know, which is why I used the encompassing word "performance".
We have confirmed with sources that recently leaked tech specs are accurate. Though Durango devkits offer 8GB of DDR3 RAM, compared to Orbis’s 4GB, Sony’s GDDR5 solution is capable of moving data at 176 gigabytes per second, which should eliminate the sort of bottlenecks that hampered PS3 game performance. Importantly, we’ve learned that Sony has told developers that it is pushing for the final PS4 RAM to match up to Microsoft’s 8GB.
Honestly I don't know.... maybe more RAM could give the advantage in the tex res? I can't to say in what exactly could change to have more RAM; probably because 174GB is not that much which expected from GDDR5 bandwith?

I can't wait to see what Durango's actual RAM situation really is. Anyone who thinks MS is going to let Sony completely dominate them in the memory department has another thing coming.
It is no coincidence that MS has been working so closely with Epic, Crytek and all the other RAM whores for building their next-gen system from the ground up.
I expect both systems to have extremely similar performance, albeit achieved in a slightly different way.
PCs are being replaced by tablets and major PC CPU manufacturers like Intel/amd would want to deter the the paradigm shift by coming up with beefed up CPU/GPU specs in the future
4g wont be enough if SONY is pushing 4K and SONY always has the habit of pushing a new tech with their console releases
with 8g GDDR5, they can dominate gaming scenario for years and also they can fortify their goals of making people switch to 4K TVs
XDR2 doesnt even exist...
i-lo's (or Thuway's? One of the two) theory that Sony could be trying to go for 6GB GDDR5 RAM makes alot of sense assuming it's true that they're using 512mb for the OS. That 5.5GB GDDR5 would match up well to the 5-7GB DDR3 Microsoft plans on using for games.
I have no idea how that would affect the price or size though.
The same people said Vita won't have backwards compatibility with digital PSP games unless it is a similar architecture which mean it wont be that much more powerful. In the end we got both, different architecture that's powerful and backwards compatibility. NeoGAF is being extremely cautious these days. People keep forgetting Bluray and Cell were huge expenses back when PS3 launched and Sony are not introducing anything crazy like that any more.
I'm happy to hear the dev's say that "Orbis is easy to program" and I hope there are no more shitty ports in the case of Multiplatform titles.
The input lag in BF3 on PS3 still makes me mad. :|
You hope and expect alot but we shall see what they both offer eh?
Please dude. No one is doing 4K resolution gaming on consoles. You do not need 8gig of DDR5 for anything next year or in 3 years.
Oh boy...

With Vita, I could see your point. No one expected Sony to take a hit on the unit, but they did, and kudos to them. However, the RAM situation is a bit different. Heat goes up dramatically every GB they add. It's a sensitive situation that is not as easy as chucking another chip in. You have to factor in cooling and size costs.
could'nt there exist a special contract between rambus and sony?
rambus sold more than 200 million of their ram solutions because of the playstation.
So do you think it's 100% impossible for Sony to have changed to 8GB? Forget GDDR5 for a second.
Edit- banned? Wha?
thuway push his luck.
thuway down.
Proelite save us with more leaks.

To do 6GB of GDDR5, they would have to change the memory controller. 256bit to 192bit. Not gonna happen. With GDDR5 clamshell mode, they could target 8GB easier without changing the memory controller.
why did this guy got banned?
Thuway does not deliberately obfuscate 1 truth with multiple lies to cover his tracks like Proelite. He can not be trusted. Better wait for Bruce'R'eeRoy/GopherD/lherre(this one being the vaguest of them all) for more suitable information.
Agreed. Thuway over Proelite for leaks any day lol. I think I have Thuway on my FB anyway, so I'll prod him for deets if he gets any new one's lol.

is he perma banned or temp banned?? man this guy had great tweets

Only on paper! No actual product.
he thread complained, it should be temp.
His avatar would be gone if it was a permanent ban.
Nah, that's just a myth.
Avatar disppearing when banned is just a random glitch, apparently.
On Topic: We really do need to see some game leaks.
I'd like to know this tooWhat's that from?
I shouldn't really say, but as far as I know, both Thuway and Proelite had access to some of the same information. Which was essentially some official documentation pertaining to specs for Durango or something, from some time back. Thuway has a source that's linked to one of these companies, not sure if Proelite has anything similar.
That's likely why both have been somewhat higgeldy piggeldy with information. especially Proelite. One, because this type of news changes all the time, even among sources, and two, because a bulk of the information they had in the first place was actually quite dated.
I know Thuway updates himself with new information from his source(s), but I'm not sure if Proelite does or can do the same outside of posts he reads about it on the forums. That might explain why he was always less reliable and privy to change. Who knows.
This is what I'm thinking as well. It was good to see Thuway agreed with me earlier.i-lo's (or Thuway's? Hey guys, did you hear this? PS4 will feature "hyperrealistic games" and "render games at 240 frames per second" - Michael Pachter
Proelite doesn't sound like he knows anything.

A new Share button on the controller will, when pressed, launch a new feature that will allow screenshots and video to be distributed online. The PS4 hardware will continually record the most recent 15 minutes of onscreen action (with no processing penalty, claims our source), which users will then be able to edit and broadcast via the Internet.
He's a MS employee, right? Not sure why he'd be privy to ps4 details.
