EDGE review MS-Conf: "One of the most contemptuous press conferences in E3 history"

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
Edged nailed it. This is the article we've been needing since 2006. However, unlike 2006, MS has no games for a whole conference. Since 2009, it's been "here's some games for the hardcores. AND NOW WE SUPPORT DISNEY/NETFLIX/HARRISONFORDWHOGIVESASHIT.GIF SERVICES HERE!"

Okay, admittedly, them getting Netflix on there is good for Netflix owners. But here's the thing: I don't use Netflix. So that service is pointless to me. I use twitter, but the twitter app SUCKS on the X-box and I can simply save $50 (er-$60) a year using it for FREE on my own internet connection on a PC. So... why should I sub for it?

I mean, I feel the same way as them getting the "service unavailable" thing, but different: I don't use those services so what good are they to me?

Besides: I'm still waiting on MS to reach J. Allard's promise of me being able to make user generated content and selling it (Oh, like Diablo's auction house but different). Hell, it doesn't even need to be a selling aspect. Just the fact I can create things in many different games. Forza is the only game I recall this gen on the 360 (that isn't an X-box port of this stuff: Sup, Far Cry Instincts!) that does user generated content and marketing/"selling" it on the service. Talk about a missed promise.

Sorry, was too busy watching Beyond, a more awesome mature game or so it seems. I sure will enjoy them, thank you!

The fact that you're using that game as an indicator of maturity in games speaks louder than the point you were trying to make.

We, as gamers, push ourselves in a corner and now, all of a sudden, people are waking up to it. Why now? Are the pretty pictures and tech-talk not distracting us anymore from how blatantly mindnumbing our hobby is and has continued to be? I just don't get it. Why 2012? Not 2005 or 2001? Is it IOS threatening us, or Netflix or Espn threatening us? I sure hope not.

Edit: Did we just realize, today, that we're not 12 anymore? Because that's been the case for a while.

You are right. And I can feel it's too late so we will just "eat it". But hoping MS to bet more in gaming and less in Apps or Kinect is just my wish. I know they are changing their business formula. If you saw my earlier post, I said that I get it, I just don't fit the consumer MS want anymore. Their direction was clever and it was not bad since a wide open of consumers or a 360 in the living room is one of their objectives. It's just not suited for my tastes. That's all. At least you make a point and justify instead of "lol, go play super smash bro rip off" so I thank you for your humble point of view in all honesty.

Sony's conference was no better. Super smash brothers with PS3 characters, assassin's creed vita and call of duty vita, more apps, some stupid move stuff, and 2 decent games: the heavy rain sequel and that survival horror game.

Well, look at it this way, if you want to feel more optimistic about it at least: Microsoft trying to cater to a wider net of entertainment is actually making gaming seem more mature than it is. In other words, I can watch Casablanca on my 360. I can watch the Twilight Zone on my 360. I can listen to Bach on my 360. I can do things that are actually catered for someone around my age and maturity level. Sure, none of them are gaming related and yeah, maybe trying to throw these wide nets is distracting to Microsoft as a publisher, but, let's be honest, if they weren't concentrating on this multimedia thing, they'd be pushing out more 12 year old wet-dreams.

The issue, at least to me, with this industry, isn't that there isn't enough quantity, so I wasn't nearly as offended by Microsoft's outing as everyone else here. Was it good? No. And I totally see where GAF and Edge are coming from. Beyond certainly is somewhat more mature and experimental than other outings in this industry, but my god, it's 2012 and that's considered mature? Man, we've gone nowhere. It's depressing.

Every year MS always confuse me what E3 really for?

It actually started out as a expo for retailers. I think today it's still about retailers, and now publishers and content providers as consoles move towards becoming multimedia boxes.

I can't WAIT till Edge describes the Sony conference.

Damn you I came here to post that. As a company known for their studios I think its clear both they and MS are holding out SOME for the next gen. However both events were abortions. Anything below a D is a fail. And they both get different F's. I mean man those were both so fucking bad. Each highlighted by 1-2 games of note.
But E3 isn't as much for gamefans as we all like to pretend.

Yup. Decent presentation, but again, no major surprises, nothing game-changing, nothing thats gonna be all over the headlines. But pretty much what I'd expect near the end of the console's lifecycle. No doubt both Sony and Microsoft have a lot of BIG stuff going on behind the scenes right now that they're not ready to announce yet. The timing is bad for this E3 cuz barring Nintendo's conference with lots(hopefully) of great Wii U software and demos, it seems that its just that *tad* bit too early for Sony and MS to drop the bombs with their new consoles.

I'm pretty happy with everything seen so far. I guess it just depends on what sort of expectations you had going in. A lot of people get over-excited about things.

THE WORDS! They'll drift away without the _!
I guess the only real differences for me was that Microsoft started with the good stuff and Sony finished with it.

Except that's what Jack Tretton was rubbing his tits over at the beginning? MAN I LUV U GUYS U FANS ROX

Hahahahah ya true:)
I just can't wait until the Edge Review. Both companies came at it in the same way they just sort of disguised it differently. But I am not sure they plan on doing 1 for each show. And Sony did the RIGHT thing by ending with good games. Leading with them...just doesn't pay off as well and MS should realize that.

it's interesting that Microsoft came as the hardcorexx console but fell in line behind a disruptive/Wii strategy within one generation. are Nintendo and Sony?? the hardcore?

Sony is also pushing the entertainment but not as much as Microsoft. Nintendo will probably only show the games because they want the hardcore back.

It was J Allard behind the original vision of taking over the living room (or preventing Sony from doing so). He just failed at getting the casuals over to Xbox before he finally left. Microsoft finally struck the right chords with Kinect and apps in the last couple of years.

They've been trying for a long, long time. Maybe it was Wii that created that audience and MS just jumped on board, but you can't deny they've been trying to get that demographic for ages.

Well I believe Nintendo really want their hardcore fans back, but we'll see how Nintendo approach them tomorrow.

One part of that article really speaks to many of us. This part:

"What felt like a third of the conference was now dedicated to what you might call the X-top-box: 360 as a streaming media hub. This was a good chance for the presenters to forget that anywhere exists beyond America and Canada, boasting of last year’s UFC app that no one else can get. 35 new content providers were announced, among then Nickelodeon and Paramount Pictures. We look forward to learning that we can’t get them either."

BTW is Kinect gaming DEAD? MS didn't introduce any new Kinect titles neither did they show any updates on previously announced games (Ryse etc). Seems last Fall's Kinect games must have bombed hard.

Is Dance Central 3 played by controller?

Let's be real people, it's very clear MS is working on the Durango/720/Infinity/Loop whatever you wanna call it. Nothing substantial from the internal studios or even their close third party partners like Epic, Crytek, and Remedy. Yeah Gears Judgment was there but that's PCF, not Epic proper. Nothing from Turn 10, Rare, or any of their other internal teams they've recently formed. Next E3 will be big.

I think Dance Central 3, Matter and Wreckateer are Kinect games, there was a Fable: The Journey trailer and they showed some voice integration with EA's sports games.

If MS are still around then. Their conference was so bad, I've binned my 360, cancelled my Gold sub, un-installed Windows from my home and work laptops, deleted my Hotmail account and am in the process of installing Oracle and Lotus Notes over my company's MSSQL and Exchange servers.

These conferences have always been more than just games. I like to see what the new features and services are. We're always going to see game trailers and hype regardless, so I really don't give a crap about more Halo footage.

To the people trying to defend the conference by saying that its now aimed at a more casual audience: I didn't know your mum watched E3. Its broadcast on Spike TV, thats a pretty clear indicator of who your audience is.

Author sounded like a bitter fanboy.

He clearly should have held off until Sony finished their conference.

You could be just as bitterly cynical if one should choose to be. Be interesting to read his review of it, if any.

Because Spike wants to show coverage.

E3 is about showing publishers, retailers, and developers what they have coming up as well. It's not just about impressing gamers so they can discuss it on fucking message boards.

I don't know; both major conferences were tepid if you ask me. We knew MS would devote at 1/3 of their time to ancellary services so not sure why people get all uppity about after the fact. My tops so far for Day -1 is:

1. AC3
2. Halo4/Last of Us
3. God of War: A
4. South park

Yeah, I wouldn't hold my breath on that one. Bitter fanboy writers don't tend to mete out justice equally.
