Used mimic because i was low on resources due to the Santa Claus duo. Rivers of blood and one magic protection incantation later:

Any advice on how to avoid that annoying "flurry" attack from Melania? (the one where she jumps around and slashes appear around here...that does massive damage and she does 3 times in a row)
I spent like an hour and a half trying to kill her yesterday and she killed me with that one move pretty much every single time, the only times I've reached her second stage are when I lucked out and managed to avoid it.

When she does the build up and I'm at a decent distance I can sometimes avoid it by just running away but she usually does it when I'm really close to her.
The only one I can consistently avoid is the second attack.

Can't you spot a delay in the third slash or whatever so you'll have to time your roll a bit later? Spitballing. I will find out soon enough for myself

My experience basically xD

I ended up using the Ash of War : BloodHound Step. When she does her move, just spam L2 and you'll be invincible.

I think you can also throw a freezing pot at her when she jumps to start the move. It will trigger Frostbite and stagger her, cancelling the move.

There is also a precise method to dodge each flurry but I don't know it.

This move makes what could have been an awesome fight, a frustrating fight.
Not bad but frustrating to get kill by a extremely difficult to react move.

I'll try the freezing pot thing thx, I'm also looking up some videos online.
I don't normally look up tactics online for these games but in this instance I agree that one move makes an otherwise cool fight way more annoying and frustrating than it should be. Getting killed over and over by the exact same annoyingly hard to avoid attack sucks.

Still want to try to beat her on my own though, no spirit ashes.

Earlier today I was watching a French YouTuber do the Bloodhound Step and it was working quite well for dodging the waterfowl dance! Unfortunately it only takes one mistake to get destroyed. Poor dude streamed for nearly 3 hours without beating her.

Where do you get that ash of war?

I spent 20 hours on her... Wanted to beat her solo, without changing my build. I had to resolve myself to use this Ash of War to avoid her stupid Waterflow attack.

It's dropped by the Night's Cavalry (night boss) on the bridge just next to Lenne's Rise (in Caelid, Dragonbarrow region)

First paragraph:

I too want to do it solo (the real baddies) but I'm more flexible regarding my build. There's something to say for sticking it out for 20 hours out of sheer principle. It's also a bit stubborn OCD esque.

Like yesterday I defeated some black knife assassin: frost edition. Solo. But he was kicking my ass a bit and you're 1 click away from a +10 Mimic. But I learned to attack first and dont give him any room.. And got him quite fast that way ie I solved the dynamic puzzle

That horsey guy i posted on top of this page I immediately summoned mimic. Was very low on resources and yay an other small archer on a horsey.
I would've tried to solo him first but I was like let's get this over with lol

Really depends for me. But I kinda respect your attitude. I'm sincerely remorseful about using spirit ashes in the first part of the game. Even tho some would've evend the battle. Many just let me go all out on their asses and therefore missed the dynamic puzzle.

Second paragraph: sweet in think I got that one.

:messenger_grinning_sweat: Guilty !
It happens often in Souls game for me. I have a build in mind and I always stick to it no matter what. It's usually fine but in Elden Ring, it's different. The game is based on adapting so...
In first playthrough, I always want to beat every boss solo, that's why I was so stubborn on her.

Now I experiment with the Spirits and it's good fun too :). There are still some fights I enjoy more doing them solo.

Hey I don't blame you. Have some good ol' OCD myself my brethren haha! I'm not THAT set on a specific build because I don't know which is the most fun for me. Turns out Melee With some Faith and Arcane, heavy AND light weapons is what it turned out to be.

With that said I'm no veteran.
First was DS3 for Xbone on release..I remember having the copy I'm my moist hands thinking "Can I do this? Am I GAMER TM enough? Well turned out I was. Made it to the end boss but couldn't beat him in over 50 tries (may be exaggerate)

Many moons later bought DS1 Remastered and quit after first trying Ornstein and Smaugh(?)

Beat Bloodborne once and done quite some of those dungeons. Never finished the DLC. BB I really like to replay.

Played a bit of DS2 but didn't about the roll stat. Dropped it not even halfway through.

Double dipped DS3 on PS4PRO and did all (hidden) bosses and got the final boss first try. So weird.

Sekiro till that fountain area. So I want to replay that one also.

So yeah. I played them all but not like most of you hardcore guys...

Sorry find typing therapeutic

Yeah my Dex is low and I don't even have it yet it seems. Isn't it the very long one?

I used it in DS3 for a while I think. Anyways it's great you're able to give It an ash, tempting.

How do you do a seppuku ?
Seppuku is one of the ashes arts you can associate with the Uchikatana. It eats a bit of health but massively increases you damage output for a while - key for keeping ahead of Malenia’s healing. Also, Mimic is able to use it independently.

Just had Astel at 10% health left. But she pulled her infamous ace.
First or second stage? Joking, I dont think Astel has a second stage

I have read it triggers at 70% and 50% so if you anticipate those thresholds and start running away that may help. Of course if she regains health that may trigger it again.

It’s possible to roll through it but the window is super short so not safe unless you are insanely skilled.

For me, the best way was for them to never happen, by locking her into a stagger loop, like so:

Hahaha damn you got me with the second stage!! Classic lol. Well. I hope not, I don't think so at least. Or I'm already fighting her second stage and behind the veil she's in the first stage making funeral arrangements =P

Cheesy joke my apologies

But regarding the uchikatana; I looked it up and it was in a very low level tomb. Can't believe I missed it. With that said, I thought it was that super long ass katana, perfect for Astels legs you know.. But alas.

Oh and I also got the seppuku right after. Funny, I used that incantation where you spread blood or something in front of you (you get it from one of the main bosses, I'm so bad at remembering names ) and the beetle walked on it; easy peasy.

I also have that snake katana with the saw Mark's on it's blade that looks kinda sick and it does poison build up. And the last katana is the one with the lightning skill. Also very dope.

But I'm going be DelireMan7 DelireMan7 and try to finish her with the red river which isn't a great fit for this fight, i think the Guardian Greatspear will eat her up and poop her out with it's moveset....

As annoying as that move is, it's often an all or nothing situation and a lot of the tactics are the same for her: dodge towards her. She lunges forward with so many of her attacks that rolling or even running backwards is the road to death. I've been down that road. Don't do it. Once you get the timing and distance down, you'll be fine. Dodge through Waterfowl and she will be attacking the air behind you.

Malenia is like a min-max character. She put all her points into reach, attack, and health regen, but that left nothing for poise and status resistances.

I've tried the famous ice pot trick, but I was always too slow or at the wrong range to hit her and the recovery on throwing left me seriously hurt.

I should warn everyone that a +9 Rivers of Blood ash of war Corpse Piler will cause bleed faster than Blood Nagakiba/Uchigatana +25 with Seppuku ash of war and has slightly longer reach all around. It costs more MP though. Only thing faster is probably Bloodboon Ritual on Mohgwyn's Sacred Spear, but that one takes too long to activate, lacks stun, and lacks poise (besides requiring high arcane investment to wield).

On Malenia Cold infused armaments work faster, and Hoarfrost Stomp Ash of War is dirt cheap FP wise and stuns twice.

Ok finally beat Melania, though in the end I caved in and just used Spirit Ashes. Had her down to like 10% health in her second form, then she used that attack where she sends those humanoid forms and before I could even use an estus she hits me with the annoying flurry attack at point blank..... so I just said fuck it and started using ashes on my next attempt (still took like 10 lol). Guess I could have kept at it for another 5 hours or redone my build to something specially effective against her but, honestly, I don't need the "gamer cred" and I wasn't enjoying the fight too much.

She's by far the hardest boss in any FROM game, and I'm sure some people beat her easily. But unlike other hard bosses in their others games she just felt kinda cheap to me, fast, lots of hp, hits hard and heals herself with each attack, have to take her down twice in a row with full health bars and she hits you with that annoying, extremely hard to dodge flurry attack.

I am so with you. Actually, my main issue is really the flurry attack. Could have been a really tense but fair fight. But here, as you said, it feels cheap.

I am close to the end of the game on my current character. From the beginning I wanted the weapon and Ash of War of one of the last boss (Spoiler warning ! Godfrey, the First Elden lord), so I purposely avoid the 3 big hidden bosses : Placidusax (the Top2/3 best bossfight of the game for me), Mogh and the secret medallion stuff that ultimately leads to Malenia; like that I have some content to tackle with my new weapon and Ash of War.

I am curious to see how it's going against Malenia since I am fatrolling this time.

Just beat Maliketh and after the third time I defeat him, I can affirm that I don't like this boss. It's just an annoying boss fight to me. He hits like a truck (and I have around 1900 HP) and just never stops moving/attacking. Me being fight rolling and using slow colossal weapons, it was really tedious to get some hit.
I used Nepheli Loux's spirit but it was still annoying. I know you can have this item to allow you to parry him but it only works on very specific attack. I could parry him at the end, and it lets him open for a long time, allowing me to finish him. But damn ! Really tedious fight each time.

Might as well ask DelireMan7 DelireMan7 when you referred to farming in The Haligtree. Was it at Millicent's site of grace's area?
Hum I don't remember mentioning farming in The Haligtree.
The most known spot to farm is in Moghwyn palace, at the "Palace approach ledge-road" site of grace. You can easily kill all the Albinaurics there for a decent amount of runes. I think you can also trick, with a bow, one of the big birds in the lower area to fall to his death granting lots of runes.
I usually don't use farming method so I don't know much.

I see. Must've mistaking you for someone else. My bad.

I only "farm #" when I'm when I need just a bit more runes to level up. But mostly I just use a Hero's rune or something.

#: I did do 2 small runs at Millicent's site of grace so I could level up 2 points.

I'm currently at the room with the two (Google's) Revenants. Pricks.

So is it me or is late game magic kinda "meh"?
I get there's some cheap tactics like downing an enemy, drinking the infinite mana Wondrous Physick and blasting them to oblivion with Meteorite of Astel or Comet Azur while they recover. But other than that the damage on these late spells usually doesn't seem worth the cost.

Like Loretta's Mastery looks awesome but after all the slow buildup the damage is laughable. Even stuff like Ranni's Dark Moon, which also looks awesome, doesn't seem worth it when you can do the same damage in half the time with half the mana cost using something like Glonstone Cometshard twice.

Yup agreed, the flurry attack in particular sucks. My spirit ashes didn't really do much damage but them getting targeted with one or two of those instead of me already made all the difference.
Beat Placidusax yesterday, that was a pretty cool fight and felt refreshingly manageable after struggling with Melania for hours

Had to revert to my good ol' +25 Ultra Greatsword with Lion's Claw and bloodflame. But I finally succeeded.

Even looking at the glintstone projectiles, you start with pebble and arc. One is the repeated projectile, the other is a penetrating spell that hits groups nicely. All of the upgrades are either slower or less cost efficient. Then you get Night versions, and there's only a couple but that's all you need because enemies don't dodge them. You trade a small amount of power for being able to actually hit the input reading bastards.

My most used spells are the sword spells, namely the normal sword one (for speed) and the ice great sword (groups, status, melee but range).

Ranni's moon is good for status, as it inflicts a debuff (magic weakness) and ice, so it's an investment of FP more than a damage dealer.

But yeah, the late game damage output is the standard Comet Azur and/or Meteorite of Astel.

Outside of the above, I carry the gravity 3 rocks spell and the life sapping mist, which is nice for anything that doesn't move much. Also the ice projectile, but I don't use that too often. I like to find a mix of fun and usable so that I'm not just running an OP character. I have done the flask + Azur thing on the odd boss I don't like, but I usually try to have fun. The sword spells are favourites, it's like taking the long way round to a melee build but I have options

Didnt read anything Melania related. I only know of one frustrating move.

Man. Did some speed running which made a ultra super mega mob to chase me so I died. Spent 40 min looking for a sacrificial twig, ended up following That trickster Prick's quest line but the postuee grovel? Didnt do shit so I had to kill him. 1 fucking twig. So yeah. Fingers crossed.

I think I will finish my journey on Sunday. Only have the final boss left. Got all the achievements, cleared everything.

Is there a chance to save and travel after finishing the last boss? So that I can save scum and get the three required endings?

You can save after the last boss and travel I think. You can have the 3 endings by save scumming like that BUT one can be a bit problematic. Are you under the influence of the Frenzied flame ? Did you reverted it ?

I think Patches' stuff is slightly broken, the safe way to do it without killing him is to let him get you. You get the gesture and he stays alive, even though you're supposed to get it without anyone dying

Patches! Yeah the name escaped me. Yeah must be broken cause I groveld 3 times while that asshole kept poking me. But twice he interrupted the gesture but the third was complete. I think? Some take very long and his constant poking made it almost impossible. Regarding that other option. I was multitasking fextra on the side but got frustrated and said well enough is enough. The experience was quite cathartic.

Aaaand Finished my first playthrough after around 90 hours. Got the Ranni Ending (still not sure if I'm just her servant or if we smashing, but whatever).
Absolutely incredible game, it took everything I've come to love from FROM games and added it to an amazing open world that addressed most of my issues with open world gaming (like over reliance on waypoints, linear progression, bad level design at the actual locations, and too much hand holding).

When I was approaching the end it struck me how long it has been since I've played a game that has given me this sense of being on a journey. There's other big games with lots of location variety but they often feel like you are always doing the same thing with a different backdrop. Like I played through Tales of Arise recently which has a lot of locations variety but ultimately it's mostly just similarly structured open fields with a different skin, with a clear main path to follow and maybe the occasional side path that leads to a chest . Elden Ring doesn't just change the look of places but ads cool new enemies, great level design, actual interesting locations and questlines to find on your own, greatly designed more linear areas within the open world, fun minibosses, worthwhile loot, amazing optional areas and content, etc.

It's still early in the Gen but knowing my taste I don't know if we'll get anything I like more than this.....at least until the next FROM gmae.

I must have tried for about 5 minutes before I let him kill me, I got a full gesture off at least 5 times before I gave and Googled to see that it's a common problem.

My first play through was somewhere in the region of 200 hours, and I'm currently just under 592 according to Steam but actual playing time is probably closer to 550

About your hours tho. No blind playthrough? Minimal exploring? Started from launch with a guide? I'm at the same amount for a single while you have multiple.

I stayed as blind as possible until right near the end when I needed to know little bits here and there. Did as much as I could by myself, then looked up dungeons I missed because there was no way I was going to check the whole map again for catacombs and caves I may or may not have missed.

Hours played doesn't mean much to me, everyone has a different pace and plays differently. 200 hours was slower than average and I think the average is 100-150 for a full(ish) exploration of the game, but if yours is higher than that it just means you're getting good value for money!

I see! Good to hear about your initial approach. Same here with the missing stuff. This is not Super Mario Bros 1-1

I need atm do a rune pick up. And i think it's best to go step by step because if I get mobbed again what's the point. They're stairs where archers with balistas are and I jumped on a arch going down into a room with Revenants and lots of regular soldiers. So yeah. I'll figure something out and it's only 1 level I'll be missing.

Another area I'm not a huge fan of. I'm told faith healing spells (except urgent heal) do huge damage to Revenants, and also dodging towards them doesn't trigger their awful flurry (allegedly).

You can do that lower strip in reverse by dropping down from one or two points, which gives you sneak attack chance against Revenants, and if you summon a spirit ash it will stay with you for the entire strip. But I tend to stay on the upper route, go round, and run through because such a dense and dangerous area means it's risky getting back to your souls when you inevitably die and there's so much to deal with

But I tend to stay on the upper route, go round, and run through because such a dense and dangerous area means it's risky getting back to your souls when you inevitably die and there's so much to deal with

I'll will try those I have them all. You know in that initial mob attack I got cornered and I could see I could summon.

But at half health summoning mimic was a no go. I think I'll go up and kill the balista's first. Then I can approach the soldiers from "the back" and the Revenants "hang out" from a saver place. With a summon and lure them out..

Because when I jumped on that downwards arch I landed and agrro'd the Revenants immediately so therefore i booked it triggering a plethora or soldiers outside the Revenants room. Just stupid and recklessness on my part.

Appreciated the advice bro ♡

Bosses are not terrifying. Cliffs are. I spend more time figuring out how to get from A to B than how to beat boss C or D.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu...

You gentlemen need to get the Twiggy Cracked Tear and add it to your Flask of Wonderous Physick. It prevents rune loss for three minutes and acts as a safety net for your hard earned Runes. It lays at the base of a Minor Erdtree between the outer and inner walls of Leyndel by the North Eastern mountain range.

Disclaimer: You always lose your souls even with a Sacrificial Twig if death blight hits you. Amusingly enough, it can hit NPC invaders too.

Oh, Dung Eater, you daft bastard.

I meant to look up how that tear worked..thanks for explaining. So you have a 3 minute window to quick travel and retrieve them. Correct?

With that said.

I worked my way around that shit area with that minor erdtree guarded by 2 strong af knights.

As for the tree stump he does instant scarlet lot deaths combined with holy damage when he hops.

I'm at the site of grace behind him. From there I can reach a scarlot rot swamp (i have the blouses and incantation as well as a dagger)

Is this the way to the Ulcerated tree spirit I need to kill for millicent? I hope so.

That way way I can ignore this pesky af part where I'm now.

Final boss spoilers

I can’t believe they made the last boss a coward that you need to chase around a huge arena if you are a melee user, and it just keeps escaping like a pathetic loch ness monster, firing from distance .

Worst boss of the game and probably of the whole Soulsborne franchise for me.

Just let me use torrent at least !

A big letdown for me especially after the 2 previous incredible bosses
