Elite Dangerous: Horizons |OT| Just scratching the surface

So it seems I'm probably locked out. Trying to log in and it won't take my password. I reset my password and it still won't take the new password. I'm at a loss. The website takes them but the game launcher won't.

No interest in the fact that that gave you a unique story to tell?

If going through the motions with little risk or randomness is your jam than so be it but I am often puzzled why people turn to a game like this if that's your thing.

The sad fact is that the risk is only one sided though. There are zero meaningful crime and punishment mechanics in the game currently, griefers are completely free and open to kill innocents on sight with no fear at all of any negative consequences to their gaming. The victims assume all of the risk and consequences while the griefers take on none. Until that imbalance changes I will stay squarely in private groups like Mobius and Fleetcom, let the griefers have open to themselves IMHO.

I remember when I used to be excited on Elite update days. Lol. Give me some fucking content, FD. I'm sure it's great for people that haven't spent thousands of hours in the game but for those of us that have...we really need some new engaging things to do. Passenger missions ain't it. Bring on the Thargoid war.

I have to strongly disagree with you there Dr, patch 2.2 is one of the best and most packed updates they’ve done so far IMHO. Lots of QoL improvements, fighters, passenger missions and gameplay, a new passenger ship, some improvements to other ships, geysers and other surface features, ship transfers, fantastic surface maps in system view, it’s really a very large list and almost all of it is pretty cool. I’m genuinely excited for 2.2 in all honesty.

So I haven't played this in like a year (still on base version, didn't get Horizons) and there's this 13GB update I had no idea was coming.

...has Frontier done a single god damn thing for explorers?

In the post right above yours, although much of that requries Horizons. ;)

But it's pretty much limited to "more things to find on planet surfaces". The recent additions that are at least nice-to-have's for explorers, on top of my head, are bookmarks, all the planetary features added now in 2.2, (although some seem to be potetntially pretty rare), jump bonuses for white dwarfs and neutron stars and potential to upgrade FSDs up to about 50-60ly with the engineer grind (on exploration equipped ships).

What part does require Horizons? Before all the surface maps in system view were just empty wireframes with a few POIs. I'm guessing that's what changed.

Passenger missions can be a plus for explorers. At least now you can earn 30-40m extra for taking someone to Sag A. There are 8-10m credit missions to take people to Jacque, certain nebulae, etc.

Honestly, no, not directly. A lot of quality of life general features have benefitted us explorers (as well as every player), but we’ve not had any direct new game mechanic content aimed at us at all, no. Surface landings are nice for explorers but there isn’t any content there FOR us, but 2.2 does change that somewhat what with geysers added now (still just eye candy though, nothing to do with them). Passenger missions added today with 2.2 is, to be quite honest, the first real exploration specific game mechanic added to the game since day fucking ONE. Also, the “starburst” mechanic of charging our FSD’s via neutron stars, also added today with 2.2, is mostly an exploration mechanic as well.

Explorers have largely been ignored by Frontier, but that trend does seem to be changing lately. FINALLY.

Yeah, I just got kicked out. Was fine for the last few hours.

Eh, what a shame. I’ll go home and update and try to play, but if I can’t then I’ll just be forced to play some more Civilization 6 instead. Woe is me!!!!!]/i]

So that wasn't all that hard at all. Mystery solved.

First happy space tourists served. I splurged on a Beluga with the best FSD, which took about 160M (from a 185M wallet, ouch), and upgraded the range to level 5. Then I took a bunch of guys to a quadruple-star Kevin Costner waterworld. I feel like Frank Drebin in the Beluga, always scraping some part of the ship against the station when I arrive. But it does have a huge fuel tank.

The tourist beacons and passenger missions really feel like a nice exploration upgrade. I'm much more interested in going far away when there are some interesting destinations and actual purpose to it. Of course first I'll have to grind local space taxi missions to get to the good stuff, but that's nothing new.

The new jump effects are nice and shiny too.

Dammit, copying over the beta files and updating through the Frontier launcher went well and quick, but Steam insisted on updating the whole thing again. >.<

Whats the jump range like?

All this elite talk is making me want to drop BF1 for a bit and try this out.

In terms of content, passenger missions are pretty much it and for me they're completely uninteresting. Can't get excited about the added surface features/details and maps that have no gameplay associated with them. QoL features are nice of course but I'd like a reason to play. It's packed full of line items in patch notes but how much of that involves new gameplay that's actually worth your time?

You could actually try and answer your questions yourself by actually playing?

I don't know if they'll have staying power, but I'm enjoying the passenger missions. I know it's really little more than cargo transport but the nuance some of them require makes you be creative and change your playstyle.

If NPCs become more persistent, it would be even better. I'd like to get messages from people I've helped out asking for favors or missions. Would be even better if they would recognize you if you were ever flying around the system and helped you out, offered escort, backed you up, etc. That level of persistence is of course something FD is Looking Into©.

Was the Elite Dangerous 2.x watermark always on the screen before the patch?, i don't remember it being there and its dam annoying having it during gameplay.

Anyway to remove it?.

Edit.

Nevermind.
Elite forums support.
This is a known issue which will be removed in the first 2.2 patch, hopefully later this week.

Bought one as well. I'm thinking about selling the Anaconda now. Need to do the FSD upgrade yet though.

But goddamn, I always get stuck in the slot with the back-wings :D With this ship the VR setup does not help as it does in an Anaconda :(

I like that the planet detail in the system map. I just wish we could set a waypoint on the planet. What good is seeing an interesting spot if I can't mark it? Also, I'm not crazy about having to scan the planet to get the system map to display properly.

Wow it's going to take me four hours to update over my farm town ISP, this patch is large.

Guess I'll play some Civ 6 while I update!!!!

What's happening there?
Look at the Anaconda in the distance... that's his hired-hand NPC crew member damn near splattering it across the landscape.

Bought a Beluga, couldn't help it.. hehe. Definitely got a fat ass.. seems like it doesn't maneuver that well compared to the combat ships I've been driving lately, but it's probably more nimble than its size would lead you to believe. It's not fully kitted yet, but a quick look at the missions shows several I could do worth a few million apiece that wouldn't take but a couple jumps to complete. Which I'll get to tomorrow, I'm tired. It's a pretty ship, though.

Galactic Fork

A little fluff between the ears never did any harm...
When I powered up today after installing 2.2, I was met with this:

Somehow an SRV was floating outside my ship. My SRV was still there. I also couldn't launch because it said my cargo scoop was out... (it wasn't) had to restart the game.

Did a fairly straightforward sightseeing mission for 900,000 credits. Not bad. But man it looks like almost all other mission types got nerfed hard.

All the crew member options are ugly...
