Yep, I heard about it, WOOT! :) That is going on my Asp and probably never coming off! :)

Crosspost from the SC thread:

...I need a VR headset.

Can confirm this is how it feels (the sense of scale). I went from thinking my Courier was tiny to it being like...a fucking ship! And the Cutter...WHEW LAD.

Now, if I can just figure out the resolution issues. Everything is perfect but everything atm is a blocky mess. Haven't tried changing any of the configurations yet. I really hate FDev sometimes. They are really bad about shielding players from the burden of knowledge. Vive and Rift owners shouldn't have to guess at how their headsets should be configured to make the game look right.

Wont bother posting the new newsletter since there is nothing new but they did mention that we will be getting new updates on the engineers update in the coming weeks.

So while waiting for my Vive to arrive next month it looks like Elite Dangerous training is gonna keep me busy :)
This game really does feel like an MMO I've not felt so overwhelmed when first launching a game since EQ back in 99..but in a good way..like Damn! this is gonna take some commitment to really appreciate and learn.

I get the feeling I'll get 20 to 30 hrs into the solo play to just get things "figured out" .
First night was just trying to rebind keys to suit my preferences and re configuring buttons on my old saitek cyborg evo. that was two days ago..i decided this AM to order the Thrustmaster t-flight Hotas :) its basic but should be an improvement.

As well I started watching a bunch of tutorial videos and was like man I CANT wait till i get a ship with that Teal color scheme..and get rid of the ugly Bright Amber/Orange... then found out you can change it yourself. HA! Mauve it is..seems less harsh which seems ot be an issue with VR headsets.

Starting bulletin missions seem to be crap shoot and haven't been successful yet..but no one said Space was gonna be easy

That's a file hack you can do it now

Got back into this again after a long hiatus. How far do I have to get from civilised space to start coming across unexplored systems? I'm 600ly from Sol and have yet to come across one...

Depends on what direction you're going. Everybody heads toward the core, so if you're headed that way, that whole path has already been picked clean. It'll pick up once you get a thousand light years out or so.

600ly is nothing, I push 1000ly or so every time I log on, takes about an hour.

I'm heading below the galactic plane, pretty much directly - 1,000ly now though starting to find star density an issue...

Yeah, you just need to get away from the bubble, on the horizontal plane. It's more about going where other players haven't gone over just distance. When I first set out on my current journey, I found an undiscovered Earth-like barely 400ly outside the bubble. I was astounded that no one had found it before, being so close, but I guess I was just headed off in a direction no one ever bothered with before.

Does the view of the galactic band change relative to position? I headed "down" because I wanted to see if I could get the band to become more of a disc.

In the quest it'll allow you to view the galaxy map at the system you need to go to to plot a route, but after that it depends on the type of mission what you have to do once there

anyone wanna ease me back into civilization in the next 3 days or so

i probably wont run into anything but:

1. ive got some illegal data cargo stuff from wreckage

2. 61% hull from crashing into a planet

3. no guns

I'm going to say no as I'm pirating ATM which would be a bad mix for you ;)

What thrusters do you have? If they are A or B, you will probably be fine if anything interdicts you until you get into the bubble. I can't really arm an Asp and have much jump range to go meet you far out, but I could take my FDL. Taking an Asp with little weapons is kind of pointless for this

i wasnt gonna bring a thrusters with me while exploring ;)

you don't have to fight

just have to keep the attention off my ship until I can jump, and then you can jump too

Do yourself the favor and ignore the missions. They're all kinds of poor for getting started.

Rather:

Aside from doing the tutorials, get out of your starting ship asap!

Ignore missions at the beginning, unless they give you the cargo and want you to deliver it somewhere! Even those may be hard/impossible to do, if your starting ship doesn't have the jump range.

Instead, go to the system's nav point or a RES (resource extraction site, usually found in rocky/metallic asteroid rings), scan all ships and help the system security kill the wanted ones (you get all the bounty if you did enough damage). Deliver the bounties at a stations for some nice profits.

I have little hope that this situation will be "fixed" with 2.1, but I seriously hope that they will improve it a little. There's no fun to be had in accepting courier missions for pitiful credits only to find that your starting sidewinder even lacks the jump range to get you to the destination. And that the better jump drive to counter that issue is some 30 of those mission payouts away. :p

Those photos are pretty terrible, though...

I play Elite on the DK2 and with a UI that isn't red (an issue that AFAIK isn't there anymore on the final VR models) it's great. Using those photos to decide anything is just a bad idea.
It's like if I take a zoomed photo with an iPhone of my monitor playing some game, then post it and having people decide on the quality of the monitor off those pics.

It shows the Rift's glare pretty well, as well as the harder to read text on the Vive. They're also not the only pictures but these were more convenient to post. It's too bad both companies went with Fresnel lenses.

Yes, very much so depending on your position. Here is how the galaxy looks from 65,427 lys away from Earth:

This is how it looks in a nebula close to the core, center of the galaxy:

When you get either high or low below the galactic plane the galaxy beneath you gets "cloudy" and you can see space dust around the stars in high density areas:

Does not look a lot better than on my DK2 imho. But could be image quality, etc... Need to make some pictures of it that way as well I guess.

A lot of it has to do with trying to take pictures with a camera through the lens, yeah.

For example here is a similar through-lens picture of E:D on the DK2.

As someone that's tried Elite in Oculus, I wouldn't judge it based on these photos of someone putting a camera in the lens. It really doesn't do it justice at all.

I can outfit an Anaconda and escort you back if you'd like. Would be my first time back in-game in ages.

Ended up jumping back in today to try and grind from Count to Duke for the Cutter... Good fucking lord grinding rank is so damn awful. Really hope the military ranking system gets revamped in the Engineer update. It's just pure garbage right now. In fact everything with the bulletin board is just crap.

I wish I didn't complain about the old system

it was heaven compared to this

didn't have to spend a dime and the rank progression came every 3 pro-bono missions

ive spent anywhere from 5-20m on donations to get to r.admiral

and i'd totally do that too if there was an Empire equivalent

I know it's kinda lame to do this but fdev doesn't exactly give much options

I'm completely okay with working for the rank but this...this is like the mother of all grinds. Haha. I'm doing the HIP empire grind and only getting maybe 4% now per stack of 30 or so. It's real rough.

So this game is Crack.
I'm still just puttering around in Newbie land but I got my Eagle all upgraded as best I can with plenty to spare for when things go wrong.
Just been hanging out between a Nav location and a Spacestation doing bounties for now.

Really love this little fighter. A Gimbled Beam Weapon on Top and 2 Gimbled Cannons under the wings. Wish the cannons held more then 100 ammo but Beam to kill the shields and midrange to close range dual cannons seem to really chew up the hulls.

Not sure which ship to get next but want to keep the fighter and try mining next i think..then trading figure a Cobra Mark III is the best choice
good times

For me the Viper MK III was like sex with thrusters strapped to it. Loved that ship. Looks great, super fast, great hardpoints. Never got into the Cobra, hardpoints are badly placed but it's a nice multi-role early on.

thank you all for the reply. I did try out your suggestion. i am very comfortable with flying in general now and i know how to time jumps and dock etc. so there has been improvement. I have been focusing on solo play. However for the last 2 times this is getting very annoying that i am moving towards my target and an enemy will attack me out of nowhere and i m sucking and combat i guess. But things are improving simply flying in the galaxy gives such an amazing interstellar vibes :D

To make it worse: Other mission types, which have you actually risk some hull, take time and let you travel around, only give negligible major "faction experience" compared to donation missions. Players are implicitely punished for putting in some actual effort - not to mention trying to have some actual fun. D: The donation grind is not a mind numbing and long effort in itself.

Way to kill any fun to be had in working for ship access/system permissions. I hope that they will at least increase the faction experience gained through missions across the board in 2.1. A revamp of the whole military rank progression system doesn't seem to be in the cards for now.

different missions weights would definitely be a step in the right way - I'm sure most people just "buy" their ranks.

HIP empire grind has you stacking the cut the power/performance evaluation generator bombing and and skimmer destruction. I don't feel like I'm being punished by putting in effort, just in the sense of how little it moves the bar.
