Emily Rogers: Why you should be excited about NX’s software output

Not buying it. Before I sold my WiiU last month, I played less than a dozen games in my entire time owning it. Unless Nintendo has reorganized their entire company and discovered a secret to game production, it won't be enough to make the NX worthwhile for me.

wat

Uh... How? Why?

Did I miss something?

Some stores throws it up straight away. The price is ridiclous and the date is just TBD. I mean I've had the psp version of Type-0 pre-ordered since...well 2011? TLG since 2009. They wont charge me until it's time to ship it so who cares?

EDIT: should add that they call it "project NX" and the price is at €1000. So as soon as it becomes official and gets a price they'll change it to the correct name for me and the price as well.

Heard it all before, no 3rd party means the console is basically doomed to fail. Every Nintendo has great 1st party support so it just goes without saying. Get your shit together Nintendo, you need to compete on all fronts especially with the competition being so stiff and please give your consumers an account system where their games are tied to an account for goodness sake!
To quote what I said, earlier....
Regaining lost third party support is basically a "chicken or the egg" situation. Third parties may not come back because Nintendo lacks the necessary audience needed for their games to succeed. Likewise, Nintendo's losing marketshare because they can't get those third parties on board. One of the two parties has to make a power-play to break the cycle & start the road to recovery, and Nintendo may have to be the one to man up & do so.

More first-party software doesn't mean less third-party support. That's ridiculous. If anything, it's the opposite.

The Wii U suffered from an 8-month long drought after release. There was almost nothing from Nintendo themselves between launch and Pikmin 3. This stalled the growth of the install base. Nintendo's job is to make the system attractive to consumers and move hardware from day one. If they can do that, third-parties will have more incentive to support them.

They should go all guns blazing when it comes to their own games. If they combine their two hardware lines, they might even be able to stay profitable without external support. However, if they do manage to get it, they have a real winner in their hands. I mostly expect to see Japanese support in the beginning, but if it really takes off then others will come too.

But when there is no dorught of Nintendo games, 3rd parties complain they cannot compete with Nintendo's games and the attention they get, so they won't support it either.
We been there before, it even was a reason for Nintendo to leave gaps in the 3ds launch period, to give space for them, but they did nothing and Nintendo got burned.

Reads like Nintendo will just launch games without as much content. And it sucks. Big games ask for long development cycles, you won't have a good Metroid Prime in one year.

Lol what? A lot of Nintendo's teams have been quiet since late 2013. Also, if Retro is making Metroid Prime...well that would have a 3 year+ dev cycle if I'm correct.

Two things :

1. It would be incredibly advantageous to Nintendo to openly come out and state they support cross-play with other systems and launch the NX with a game like rocket league. Why? Because a big reason a ton of people do not buy 3rd party games on Nintendo platforms is because they cannot play with the rest of the fan-base (COD on wii etc). Having everyone know you can now buy and play lets say SFV or GTA6 and play with everyone else would greatly increase the chance of 3rd party consumers and developers supporting Nintendo again.

2. About the increased software output. I dont think they will scale down games and make them smaller, rather they are streamlining their development process via:
- Combining handheld and console dev studios
- Developing a single, connected platform/os for the NX and future systems for easy porting
- Partnering with many other developers to co-dev games (like they have been starting to with the Wii U)
- Possibly releasing NX and future games digital only (This is just me guessing based on My Nintendo only having rewards for digital e-shop purchases)

They've already combined their divisions in the recent restructuring. EAD now no longer exists and it's now called EPD.

We don't know how much time they have put through to their possible launch titles. For all we know, a lot of these games have been worked on a year before Iwata mentioned the first time about NX. We just got to see when they reveal them possibly at this year's E3.

Nintendo games explosion! Any minute now..

Just keep buying Aamibos guys.

That's also part of the issue I've mentioned about the audience Nintendo attracts now. They mainly care for Nintendo games only &, for the most part, don't give a flying fuck about third party efforts. And those who do care about third party games already have systems that satisfy those needs.

Is this the same Emily Rogers as the one that leaked Paper Mario? Her avatar seems to have changed...
She took a break for a while, & got a new Twitter account & a new avatar.

They actually have! It started a couple years ago under Iwata.

Yeah, that worked out real well for the gamecube.

GameCube was during a time when handhelds and consoles were in a league of their own.

Nowadays many handheld games pretty much are indistinguishable from consoles. Look at Kid Icarus: Uprising. That could have easily been a Wii U game. Console and handheld games are really homogenized with each other now, so it makes sense to unify the divisions, which would help things a lot.

Don't forget a bunch of Rare games moving from Xbox to Xbox 360. Some of them, like Perfect Dark Zero, even started their life on GameCube.

And speaking of Rare and GameCube, Star Fox Adventures was supposed to be Dinosaur Planet for N64. Kirby Air Ride was being made for N64 and was even one of the first titles announced for that system.

And Kirby GCN, I forgot about it! Plus Mother 3 bizarrely going from N64 to GBA. It's nothing new and it will work out better both for them and for us in the long run.

Third parties aren't coming back to Nintendo hardware, so here's hoping they've got a hell of a software lineup for the first few years of the console.

Eh. I wouldn't rule that out completely.

If NX is a success and easy to port to (Nintendo's previous consoles either lacked one or both of those qualities), then why not put out cheap-and-easy ports?

Last gen JP publishers were all over the 360 and PS3 equally because they wanted to cast a wide net for themselves and guarantee profitability. I'd think publishers would want to have their games on as many platforms as possible.

Square Enix pretty much blurted that the new Dragon Quest game was coming to NX then they had to backtrack because they shouldn't have said it....

You tell me why 3rd parties would even be interested , if said system does not bring millions of new consumers into the fold?
There is 0 reason for them to split their usual consumer base from the 2 consoles now, onto 3, that is just added costs to port for them.

See, my brain tells me not to jump at another Nintendo system day 1 and get burned again. But showing games like Animal Crossing with a concrete release date and my heart will make me be there day 1 lol.

What the hell am I reading. I'm super excited for the NX, but this statement right here invalidates everything this source is claiming. Saying the 3rd party selection left a lot to be desired I understand, but Nitnendo's 1st party output on the WiiU is undeniable quality.

Also, putting out a large number of titles quickly isn't something to be pumped up for, especially when this person talks about how they supposedly changed their whole approach and process. I hope focus on quality and polish hasn't been thrown to the back-burner.

Wii U's titles were really hit and miss quality wise. There are quite a few clunkers, including 2 released last holiday season.

Well, they were extensively reorganizing it since Iwata's death, from internal studios to top management.

#IWANTTOBELIEVE and all but I need more facts than this. I'd also want to know how anyone could get that much information on Nintendo's first-party games. Did a source just give her a pamphlet containing all of Nintendo's games or what?

You might want to use a better example, because Sony funding SFV pretty much made sure that it won't leave PS4 or PC.

It's just an opinion. Don't see how it invalidates anything.

Yes i know but i do not think Nintendo has really taken advantage of that yet since they do not have a connected/singular platform for their handheld and console yet. I imagine once the NX and NX Handheld are out it will be a different story.

Yes thats true. I was just using a popular game thats not on Nintendo systems as an example.

Lol exactly. Pikmin 4 was near done as of last September, right? Then there is Zelda and whatever Nintendo's Mario 3D team is working on. Did they have a job listing for a 3D action game in 2014?

Well, they were extensively reorganizing it since Iwata's death, from internal studios to top management.

True, but until there are results, I'm going to assume it's still just same ol' Nintendo. I'd be happy to be wrong, but after the WiiU, I'm not getting near the NX until year 2 or 3 at the earliest.

Always wondered; how do people find out how long someone's banned for? Particularly in this case since he deleted his twitter?

He came back on Twitter. Some have asked him if he was perma'd and what he was banned for. He only got banned for sourcing ZhugeEX without permission and nothing else, also the ban will be lifted sometime mid June.

Kyle Bosman is a world treasure I say. Damanhur should add a statue to celebrate his greatness.

Square Enix pretty much blurted that the new Dragon Quest game was coming to NX then they had to backtrack because they shouldn't have said it....

Yeah that was the silliest thing ever. Just accept it, take it as free pr and don't divulge which version they where talking about and be happy some of us got excited.

Wii U has arguably the best library right now and it's deader than dead.

It does have a great library but it had a lot of things going against it. Price point and timing plus Nintendo being in a weird transitional period, still reeling from the Wii's success. It seems like they've doubled back and rethought things (upgrading online infrastructure, partnering with DeNA, playing more loosely with IP and branding), so I'm cautiously optimistic that they've gotten their junk together.

I have concerns about the NX and Nintendo in general but I have faith in them to turn this thing around in one way or another.

My thoughts exactly. It can't be utilized until the new systems hit because the restructuring is for the new ecosystem. It's simply not possible right now because the Wii U and 3DS are far too different from each other.

I usually am a big Emily Rogers fan but she went way too far out of her way to couch her statements

Expect a ton of games....oh, unless they are delayed...and oh, maybe they won't be announced at E3...oh and I'm talking about the entire lifespan of the NX

No real reason to doubt her, but with all those disclaimers she basically said absolutely nothing. "Expect a lot of software, maybe, and eventually". Alrighty.
