Emily Rogers: Why you should be excited about NX’s software output

The Nintendo World Championships this year should feature Smash, Splatoon, SMM and Zelda U, and then reveal at the end 'they're all coming to NX!'

It's a good point (a good reminder at least), but this shouldn't be taken for granted.
Stuff happens during development, and they can be late and cause a delay.

And even if that's more unlikely, that's something Kimishima have a hand on, he can decide for any valid reason to delay the launch, and don't follow Iwata's now fairly old roadmap.

The point that I'm trying to make here is that we can't say that Nintendo is just going to do everything as they have in the past. It being delayed wouldn't change that, and saying that Kimishima would completely change the roadmap is a bit of a stretch unless he's putting NX on the backburner to focus on growth in mobile, or the old roadmap was rushing it too much. I can't say anything about the latter, but the former is highly unlikely:

Kimishima said:
As you said, when I became president, I stated that my role was to continue to proceed on the course that I helped to set with President Iwata and the rest of the management at that time. The ideas of our young employees are also key to our ability to transition to the next generation and to continue to produce exciting ideas. It is important to structure our organization so that these young people can take active roles. We have worked to establish such an organization; one that will allow our employees to reach their full potential in many different areas. It may be difficult to see from outside of the company, but we have made major changes to our organization. For example, our game developers have not had much of a public presence in the past, but we would like to create more and more opportunities for you to get to know them in the future.

As for business strategy, the hardware-software integrated business will remain the core of our game business, but we ensure that we will also expand this to include smart device activity and fuse these businesses into a synergistic whole. “My Nintendo” is a crucial part of this strategy as well. We seek to deepen our relationship with our consumers by having them join the “My Nintendo” program.

Excerpt from the answer to Q7 said:
As for new businesses, we will present further information when we go into details about our forecasts for the next fiscal year. We do not plan to speak about NX today. We continue development and planning efforts for NX in preparation for launch, so it will require additional investment.

From Question 3 said:
Q:"With regards to the financial performance, I believe you said that the fiscal year ending in March 2016 has been about balancing revenue and expenses, while the next fiscal year (ending in March 2017) will be a step towards aiming for Nintendo-like profits. Have these priorities changed at all? It seems like a lot of new endeavors, such as smart device business and amiibo sales, will need to go smoothly in order to realize Nintendo-like profits. If you had to provide one example of an area where you can be sure to achieve Nintendo-like profits, what would that be?"

A: "The previous and current fiscal years have been a period of preparation to launch a number of new endeavors, such as NX development, development for smart devices and business using our character IP, in addition to driving our Wii U and Nintendo 3DS businesses. [...]

The question was to pick one area with which we will be able to achieve Nintendo-like profits, but I would like to suggest two areas. One area is our NX business, and another is our business for smart devices. I believe that keeping these two endeavors on track will be key to achieving Nintendo-like profits. I don't have any further details to share about the next fiscal year at this time, but we will explain about our plan and when we will aim to achieve Nintendo-like profits at a future date.

So, it's extremely unlikely that the timeline has has changed, at least as of February.

The real question is if we'll see truth to what Emily has said right at launch.

Zelda U for the NWC? What is it going to be about? Who can get out of the training town the fastest?

If Nintendo brand new console gets upstaged by some revisions and an add on at E3, that probably means the NX probably wasnt that good looking anyway

I guess it makes sense. Go from announcing a Virtual Console release (Earthbound Beginnings) at NWC last year to announcing the entire NX line up the next year. I totally see that!

Neither PS4 nor XB1 were revealed at E3.

Since Nintendo goes last on the E3 conference schedule they should announce NX before E3 so that third parties can announce games for the platform at their conferences and in their press releases.

The most recent 2, which as of now, would make them the exceptions not the rule

I could see them doing a hardware direct the day before the other press conferences started, and a games-focused direct in their usual time slot. They tried doing that with the Wii U launch, but it ended up not working because they only had four games to show (Pikmin 3, Zombi U, New Super Mario Bros. Wii U and Nintendoland as the big closer)

If they actually have a 2006-level software showing or better this time, they could make that strategy work.

When Nintendoland was unveiled I instantly thought, "Wii U is gonna fail hard." That announcement, as the last thing, was like a foreshadowing moment for Wii U...

I hope their software shown at E3 is up to par to what their 2006 conference was.

If you've got a better idea for what should be played at the NWC, I'm all ears.

If they do NWC again, I get the feeling they might choose Federation Force since it's coming out a few months later. They could also debut Trev's last rumored 3DS game there. Perhaps they could do Pokkén to promote the game's somewhat recent release, but since they're likely wanting to look forward, I don't know what other games they could do. The standard Wii U staples (MK8, Smash, Splatoon, SMM) aren't bad bets for already released games. If it weren't so old, I'd say they should do Pikmin 3. Perhaps Monster Hunter Generations if they're willing to go with a 3rd party game.

I'm not sure if they'll do NWC again this year, since part of what made it special was the fact that it had been so long since the last one. However, since it was such a cool event, it seems likely they'll continue doing it.

Minus Zelda U, I think your Wii U => NX idea list is a pretty good idea. It just depends on if NX has already been revealed or not. I think Zelda U will be saved for the main event.

My main reasoning behind going with E3 to show off the NX, instead of pre-E3, is mostly media related. E3 is a huge event and gets the most press

This is why big announcements are often made before E3 - more press to yourself.

I'd put 5 dollars down on there being info revealed in the next 10 days. Just because they have to at some point.

Also five dollars is like nothing to me

I don't think they would show ports again at NWC if they do it this year. That would be lame! I want new NX games to see.

Btw I really hope they bring it back! It was so good last year

This sounded interesting for me:

5. Core Gamers Are A Priority

The great news keeps on flowing, with the legendary Shigeru Miyamoto going rogue in EDGE magazine to criticise the wave of 'casual' gamers Nintendo have drawn onboard. He said: "Their attitude is, ‘okay, I am the customer. You are supposed to entertain me.’ It’s kind of a passive attitude they’re taking, and to me it’s kind of a pathetic thing. They do not know how interesting it is if you move one step further and try to challenge yourself [with more advanced games].

"In the days of DS and Wii, Nintendo tried its best to expand the gaming population... Fortunately, because of the spread of smart devices, people take games for granted now. It’s a good thing for us, because we do not have to worry about making games something that are relevant to general people’s daily lives.” This is fantastic news, and shows why Nintendo will soon be capitalising on smartphone gaming territory. Focusing on core gamers means focusing on core games, and it's all from the main man himself.

This means back to the roots with core games.

Does Trev have another rumored 3DS game? I thought they were all revealed now, with the only question mark at the time being Torte City aka Kirby. Granted Style Savvy wasn't formally announced yet but it did get a codename match, but if that's the one you're referring to can you imagine the reaction? 😂😂😂

If that's the case, we can put that $5 to better use--I'd like one copy of a Game Boy Mega Man, please. 😉

Reveal ? Or more something like:

We are planning to connect our nx console with mynintendo.
So you can manage your UI also on smartphones.
We will do a full reveal @e3, we have software available to show you what we can do with the NX We also have a good line-up. Release happens end 2016 in Japan first....

For me it's the same as no info :)

Waiting until E3 to do the reveal still seems a bit too risky to me.

They've been doing that for a while now, actually. A lot of their Wii U games have been core-oriented, so that quote doesn't honestly mean too much different unless it means they're going back to the fuller gamut of variety they had during the N64 days, to the extent of covering some of the styles 3rd parties did back in the days of that platform.

I doubt there will be another NWC again this year, there will probably be something else. If there is an NWC, it would make sense to unveil Smash NX there.

What makes you think that? Didn't Nintendo imply that they'd do another one this year?

Smash NX as the debut NX title could work as a pre-press conference teaser. Could be a fun glimpse at NX and it's controller too.

Assuming that they even do a press conference. It could honestly go either way.
Conference, Direct, whatever. NWC could just be a nice teaser with a core/crossover oriented title to help grease the wheels before the big reveal with Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Splatoon, Sonic, DQ, MH, etc.

This site has an annoying popup flash ad that can only be skipped by clicking on it. I don't think we should care what they say. The fact that it's clearly a clickbait site makes it worse.

So next week we may get a little tidbit of news and then I guess the next little thing to look for is their announcement of their E3 plans. If my memory is correct we got the announcement video for 2015 in the middle of May and for 2014 we got it at the end of April.

The clock is ticking and Nintendo is going to slowly open their vault of information we are thirsty for lol.

Just remember to expect nothing more than a reveal date to be announced next week.

Don't you love announcements of announcements?
