Enter The Gungeon |OT| Praise the gun

High Priest is by far the hardest boss in the game for me. I was doing well trying to get a full 6 hearts going into floor 5 but he kicked my shit in too hard and made it impossible. The worst is when he does the dissapearing thing and spawns a bullet circle like right on top of me.
That's funny, the first time I fought him I perfected him. I have way more trouble with the other floor 4 bosses. This shows again how different people seem to have trouble with different bosses in this game.

Found the Gorgun for the second time.

You guys were right, she is the easiest boss once you know her patterns.

I didn't though and died lol

Nah, you can do it. That's what I though at first. Getting to the floor 2 boss used to be a "good run". But now I'm disappointed in myself if I don't make it to floor 4 (and I haven't even beaten the game yet). Also, things feel fast now, but once you understand the enemies more, things won't feel like they're moving so fast. These are the kinds of games that you just get better and better at every time you play. Not only because you're getting better as a player (which you will, of course), but also because the game is constantly unlocking newer and better items to use, constantly unlocking new ways to get items (via various npcs and extra challenges, not just via chests), meaning more items per run, and constantly rewarding your knowledge as well, sometimes even more than your raw skill. For instance, knowing when to not use keys, or simply having more experience with more items so you know which ones to not waste money on. So many little things like that, completely independent of raw bullet hell skill, can contribute quite strongly to whether or not you have a good run.
Good words. I'm a below mediocre Gungeoneer (expects to get to level 3 each time yet I'm wildly inconsistent), but I feel like I'm improving, getting more familiar with nuances of the game. I'm still not sure I will complete it but your comments are encouraging.

Yeah the game has grown on me as well. I was very harsh on it initially but for all is flaws it has that "one more run" element to it.
Very much the case for me, too.

Random question: So is the alien engine more or less a melee weapon (or very close range)? I just don't know how to effectively use that beast (have only picked it up a few times). I'm thinking this game will bring me to a gaming wiki more often than ever before.

Yep, you have to be pretty damn close to hit with it. It also has huge kickback so it can be used as a big backwards dodge roll if you need it.

Once again the game crashes on me after I beat the first two bosses flawless and have one of the best weapons in the game (Black Hole Gun) :( Why does this keep happening. Fix this pleaseee (PS4)

That feeling when you make it to floor 4 without any OP guns or abilities, instead relying mostly on skill and knowing all the enemy patterns and abilities.

Is this game hard as fuck? I never really got into Binding of Isaac as i didnt like the style of it, enjoyed Hammerwatch, is this worth me considering?

Have you tried rebuilding the database? I haven't seen anyone else say anything about it crashing.

So I have come to the conclusion that this game is just not fun. The bosses are way too OP compared to the shitty guns and powers. I can clear some floors easily but then the bosses just wreck me. Not normal to have trouble getting past one or two levels. In this regard, BOI is much, much better. The RNG in Enter the Gungeon is just bad.

Git gud my friend. ;)

That doesnt seem like a common complaint so maybe practice is the answer?

The skill curve is harsh but fair. I used to think getting to chamber three was a triumph -- now I'm disappointed if I take a single hit before getting to that point. It's a tough climb, but it's absolutely fun. The game just might not be for you.

Yea so I can play Dark Souls 3 but for some reason can't beat bosses in this game.

How much time do you have played? The game takes some practice to get good at it.

The bosses on the first 3 floors are the easiest part of the game, it's the later bosses and the room to room combat that's the difficult part.

Just because two games are "hard" doesn't mean getting good at one will transfer to the other. Gungeon is, especially during boss fights, a fast-paced bullet hell game; Dark Souls 3 fights are slower and more deliberate, plus you've (presumably) played the other two games so you've had more practice for that type of game.

Obviously no one is going to convince you otherwise when you conclude a game is just not fun. I'd say that not being able to get past floors initially is part of the design and that you have to keep practicing, but you've played these kinds of games before so you know how it works, it is normal.

The bosses are supposed to wreck you (at first). This isn't BoI where you can basically just stay in one spot and take a nap. You save up your best ammo/weapons for them and then focus on maneuvering between shots, using blanks, and dodge rolling.

...Are you trying to make a point here? This game wasn't advertised as being easier than Dark Souls, not to mention the fact people have different genres/games that challenge them.

Despite being in similar genres, there are some significant differences between this game and BoI. Mainly in what happens when you acquire items. So far, there's far less potential for the player to become overpowered in Gungeon. Health increases are far more rare and more difficult to come across, and there are far less synergies that break the game, if any. In fact, because you can carry a ton of different guns with you, there are almost no synergies at all outside of basic buffs. Also Isaac has so many more floors to play through than Gungeon, so naturally Gungeon's first two floors would be more difficult than Isaac's.

Quite often, a good run in Isaac becomes a trivial run, and the players ability to break the game become more and more likely as they play (naturally, a bad run in isaac will be just as difficult as anything in Gunegon, but the potential for overpowered-ness in Isaac is much, much higher than Gungeon). This may become the case with Gungeon as time goes on, but for now even a good run requires a little more skill from the player. So yes, the game is tough. So if you came into the game looking for the absurdity of Isaac, then you'll probably leave disappointed.

That said, just like the early days of Isaac, when nobody knew anything, you just gotta keep plugging along. You'll get better, new items will unlock, etc. If you don't think it's fun at all, then that's fine. But I don't think there's any real fault in the game itself. For instance, there really isn't anything wrong with the RNG. Better chests give better items. NPC quests give better items. Playing better increases drop rates. There's plenty of ways to get good items.

kill pillars are nutso.

man. I had 6 hearts and two armor, but having never seen their patterns before it took me too long to figure it out.

i had such good items too...

boots that gave me +1 armor per floor
a bullet shaped option
chest vampirism
reload on dodge roll

and some good guns too

Finally finished floor 5. With the pilot no less. His abilities didn't help much though, lol. But I played the best I'd ever played on the first 3 floors. Then I got eye of the beholster and proton backpack and the rest of the game was basically cake. Beholster destroys, so you get through rooms so easily that your coolness goes up so fast that you keep getting ammo drops to replenish the beholster. Then proton for the bosses. Was still hard fought though. Such a great game. And still so much more to do!

Did they patch out the Alien Sidearm's charged shot using three bullets or was it just a glitch? I just had a long run where its fully-charged shot was only taking one bullet, so it ended up being my go-to room clearer all the way through chamber five.

First time I found I rainbow chest and got some fantastic stuff from it.

I was totally unstoppable until the 5th floor. Boss had a sliver of health left and I choked.

The game handed me a completion on a sliver platter and I squander it.

I feel horrible.

Does this game randomize itself everytime you play like Spelunky or no? Is it like a single player game sort of like Hotline Miami?

I have gone from struggling mightily to beat the first floor boss to being upset if i dont perfect him. Made it to the 4th floor today and was over the moon happy. Finding NPC's, still learning what some rooms are for like the shrine room with the coffin looking things...

This game is great. Took me time to get the dodging down to avoid bullets.

Has anyone else ever gotten a weird glitch where the Alien Engine (or whatever it's called) wasn't giving the insane recoil?

I had the engine, and for some reason after I picked up the item that lets you fly, it just completely turned off the recoil.

The gun is OP as FUCK without recoil.

I don't think you get knockback when you have flying, so that's probably why. That or you had Heavy Boots which eliminates knockback.

But yeah I badly want to get that combo along with something like Lead Potion so I can just run up to a boss and let loose with no consequence.

I got upto level 3 last night, fought the Ammoconda boss on level 2 and actually thought he was the easiest boss yet. I had some Anvil weapon that looks like a brick or something and charging that up it was taking chunks out of Ammoconda's health. Level 3 I kept falling down holes because they were too dark to see wtf?! I might have to turn the brightness up a smidge but I hate fiddling with picture settings when everything else on my tv looks perfect.

I found some mad piercing laser gun that only holds 100 bullets but was able to make mincemeat of most regular minions. I also found the shop keeper and her robot friend and have bought a couple of things from her store.

I also found what is so far my favourite gun in the game (I don't think anything will surpass it)....the trust old AK-47....just 500 bullets of pata-pata-pata-pata-pata-pata-pata rapid fire awesomeness! I literally doubled the sound volume of the game when I picked up this gun. The description in the Ammonomicon supports my sentiments. I really hope I find this gun again very soon.

Shiiit. I died during the Pilot's past killing. Feels bad, man. He's the only one left.

Best part of the last run, I picked up a ring of fire resistance which is usually pretty boring and not that helpful. But then I picked up the fossilized gun. I brought the game down to 10FPS with the craziness - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-JguM-mMBo

One thing that's bothering me is the way spawns work in this game. Very often I'll walk into a room with a familiar layout, and then the enemy spawns (incl. reinforcements) are exactly the same every time i walk into that room layout. (across all my runs in Gungeon).

yeah this is true. I have a few rooms memorized by now

So Heroine is a pretty terrific weapon. Basically a single-target BSG but you get a capacity of 200. On its own it was one-hitting enemies even on the 6th floor. Combined with homing + angry bullets, I was clearing rooms without a sweat.

Finally beat that damn
Lich
on my 7th try. Heroine and the Sling were the MVPs. Took me way too long to realize just how great the Sling can be when used correctly.

Now that's a room clearer if I've ever seen one.

BTW, that Pilot fight bugs me for one big reason: There's an attack from the enemy spaceship that I don't think can be avoided. When it brings the two large beams towards the middle and traps you inside, there are three different attack patterns that I've seen. One of them I don't believe can be avoided without using a blank. Screwed me over the first time I reached the fight.

Yea, I think I know know which attack you mean. It sends out multiple rows of bullets that are kind of close together and no gaps in them. I think you're supposed to dodge roll through, towards the ship, but the space between the two rows of bullets is really small. I think you have to start the dodge further back so you don't dodge into the next row. That attacked messed me up real good. I got hit by hit, than used a blank so I didn't get hit again.

Can you even dodge roll during the Pilot's Past? I remember trying to right-click during the fight and the ship did nothing. That attack pattern does look like it was made specifically for dodge rolling over, though. I watched a couple videos of the fight afterward and each time someone faced that attack pattern, they used a blank.

Finally made it to the 5th chamber boss. I was woefully unprepared with 3 hearts, 3 blanks and my best boss melting weapon was the
fightsabre.
I made a go of it and got him down under half, close to one third health but that was it.

Yes, you can dodge roll during the pilot's past

Finally...

Also, I found a
green face door. When I walk into it's mouth I take damage. What's up with that door?

I got to the 4th floor boss finally. The big wall thing. I had 3 hearts, 1 armor, and an ability that grants me invulnerability for a bit.

Still got my ass kicked. There's waaaaay too much on screen for me to get a handle on where to go or how to dodge it all. It just felt like a clusterfuck. Gah. I think this game is fun but the bullet hell aspect is a bummer sometimes.

Man alive, that Treadnaught............what a nightmare, especially when you've run out of ammo and only got the marine pistol to hit it with :-/

Killing it with the pistol is tough, but I think it's one of the easier bosses now that they patched it. I actually beat it the other day without getting hit.
