Chicago Blackhawks on the clock.

As a lifelong fan, the shit going on right now with the team is fucking disgraceful. They don't need a name change, the name/logo was done pretty respectfully. But every staff member, coach, and player who knew about the sexual assault should be out of the league permanently.

It’s awful, but they probably wanted something completely generic that will offend no one.

The Braves will face the outrage mob soon with the Redskins and Indians gone. Corporate ownership Liberty Media will roll over fast.

I'm surprised the Braves havent gotten grilled. They do that chant and even a stereotypical tomahawk chop. Or maybe they dont do it anymore? I havent watched a Braves game in ages.

The names of native Americans for sports teams were meant to honor them and most nations were cool with it at the time.

As a non american my first reaction was:
"Why would they start calling people from india Guardians?....and why only in one city?"

How is Indians racist? 'Redskins' is but 'Indians' is the name of a proud group of people. Seems like an honor. Just as 'Chiefs' is a title. No different if a team was call the 'Presidents'. In fact there was a band called 'Presidents of the United States of America'. No one thought that was inappropriate.

As usual, Redskins is really only racist to white liberals.

Baseball is all about its history. I'm sure Nap Lajoie said something 100 years ago that would rule out the Naps but how about a Cleveland baseball team that actually existed?

Cleveland Spiders totally would have worked.

Spiders are scary and would have offended those with phobias.

Of course the typical native indian doesnt care. If they did, all the sports nicknames having to do with natives would had been axed decades ago. And the Atlanta Braves would never have been able to do fake chants and tomahawk chops all game.

Social media gave white liberals a way to lecture the world with their European background about social norms and discrimination because they think their piece of paper majoring in anthropology and ancient greek history is somehow equivalent to a medical degree in professionalism.

Who knew people with White Anglo, French or German backgrounds would think they are be the best promoters of anti-discrimination. lol

Born and raised in Ireland and this isn't offence at all
But why not? It's an image and caricature of:

- Looking like half Abe Lincoln/half leprechaun
- Short
- Look stupid with green clothes, a dopey hat and pointy shoes
- Only a retard fights with their fists like that
- Uncontrolled and drunk

You can thank Deion Sanders for that. Besides why did you just named Braves when Chiefs and FSU does the fake chants and tomahawk chops too?

So basically….the less representation minorities get, the better? What

Celebrating differences makes life more interesting, but I guess that’s something only happy people do

Yeah that's why this team and the Redskins changed their name. So that there could be less representation.

The disingenuousness lol

Don't like the font, but I'm all for the name change. On top of that, the Chiefs, Seminoles, Irish, the Celtics, should all just start making their plans to change. Start now, be proactive, and make the decision to NOT be named after a group of people based or tied very specifically to region/culture/ethnicity... it's going to happen at some point eventually, just get ahead of it.

I know people don't think of it as weird, because we all grew up with it. I get that perspective. But it's weird.

It's weird to have a massive institution/franchise push millions in merchandise with odd little cartoon caricatures of a certain kind of people. It's not like they are jobs -- keep the deacons, the friars, the cowboys, the packers, whatever else -- but the ethnic/regional people thing, let's just pivot away from it. It's time.

I don't know why they didn't just change the name to "The Sockies" since that "indian" name is in reference to an Indian baseball player around 1900. (Louis Sockalexis supposedly)

If they just wanted to change their name, then fine, whatever. But instead it’s only done because of people who are looking for problems. This mindset doesn’t end at one goal, so I think it’s better to stop feeding the beast before we all wake up to something vastly different. And what is so wrong with having characters of certain kinds of people anyway? We live in the most globalized time in history and we should pretend our differences don’t exist? That’s even more weird to me. Also boring

This would have been a good move, especially if it’s in honor of the guy

Well, a slippery slope is a logical fallacy for a reason. But either way this isn't my argument, even if I generally agree that this mindset -- the person/people constantly looking for problems -- can be very tiresome to deal with and really aren't the best when it comes to self-awareness.

No, I think they should be celebrated... I think the way to do that is probably NOT to just be okay with massive, international franchises stamping caricatures on mass-produced merch to maximize their revenues. It's just time to pivot from that. All the tradition and history and everything... people will get over it. Sure some of them will be mad for a little while. But things always change.

The Yankees don't play in Yankee Stadium anymore, the old Boston Garden is torn down, and the Lakers left Inglewood. All those titles, and history, and epic performances and wins in those buildings, that's all relegated to history. And it's fine. That's where that stuff belongs. This kind of thing isn't all that much different than that, I don't think.

Notre Dame is going to hold onto this like their lives depend on it... think they'll be the last to go. But honestly, it's just a matter of time. And not without reason (IMO).

I'm pretty sure FSU got the blessing of the Seminole tribes to continue not only using the name and chants, but also to keep Chief Osceola as a mascot.

Given that Native Americans experienced genocide and theft of land, I think they're allowed to be offended. This is like the bar minimum courtesy that they can be afforded. Given that I don't think I personally knew anyone of indigenous descent, despite growing up in a state with a lot of Native American awareness, I won't pretend to speak for any of them. I just don't see a point in trying to remove yet another freedom (the freedom to be offended) from people who've already lost so much.

Doesn't matter, the cancel culture will go after them.

Believe it or not, its mostly just white people trying to be knights of native Americans. By being offended for them.
