Yeah, and what does he say in the interviews... something like "My team makes me look better than I am... they deserve the credit". I don't understand the hate for this guy...

I don't understand the hate or the adulation he seems to get. I mean, he's played decently at times, he's played badly at times. It's like half the country wants desperately for him to fail either as a QB or in terms of his "image" and half the country wants him to succeed. He seems like a nice guy but there are a lot of nice guys in the NFL. I don't get the hate or the love.

Does popular mean that people actually like him? Because he's certainly the most "famous" player in recent months, in the short term sense at lease. There's no denying that his name is being bandied around.

I have nothing against Tebow. It's his 'devout' followers that are annoying. If the Broncos lose to the Patriots this weekend, and Tebow throws eight INTs, none of the blame will go on him. It'll be 'his receivers blow', or 'the defense let them down'.

you should check out the amount of cocksucking espn does to lebron james.
deepthroating, swallowing and all that jazz.

I don't know anyone who likes Lebron. They force him down people's throats and the audience rages.

But Timmy? I don't see that type of hate.

People watch Tebow so he can win. People watch Lebron so he can fail.

I'm only interested in Tebow because of the hate he gets. I don't even watch football...
You not watching football is the problem. People that actively watch know he isn't that great and he only gets attention because he is white and Christian.

Matt Flynn is a back-up QB and is better in every way imaginable and you'll probably have to Google his name just to find out which team he plays for.

I was suprised to know people in the UK that know nothing about the sport know Tebow. Must be from celebrity gossip I think.

Is it really because he's white and Christian? Phillip Rivers is a fairly devout Catholic iirc and is white and no one cares. He's even a decent to great quarterback.

I like him as a person. Say what you want about his religion, but he's an upstanding young man. Not the most accurate passer ever, but he's a good field leader. He bolsters the confidence and enthusiasm of his teammates when he's out there, and they seem to like playing with him.

ESPN has built him up so high, the inevitable downfall is going to be delicious.
Why? Dude is a good guy until otherwise. Here's one type of person I don't get: they root against people like Tim Tebow, but root FOR guys like Kobe Bryant, Ben Roethlisberger, or Mike Vick in some moral sense of "oh, he's a douche/scumbag/etc.".

You'd be surprised at the amount of hate Catholics receive from Protestants. And River doesn't appear to wear it on his sleeve like Tebow. Even back in college, he was putting 3:16 on his face.

yeah but their turnovers went down and their time of possession went up.

So do we credit John Fox for only making Tebow throw the ball 15 times a game? Because most of that isn't Tebow it's gameplan stuff.

I'm all for giving him credit for the Pittsburgh game. He deserved it and surprised a lot of people. But his coaches haven't trusted him all season to pass the ball for a variety of reasons. Some in his control and some not, so really his popularity isn't ability-based. And I think everyone here knows it.

His popularity is largely based on the polarizing nature of any discussion regarding him. Whether or not he mentions Jesus Christ my Lord and Savior is inconsequential (even if I think it's annoying considering some of his views are disgusting).

Tebow is anti-gay. Which makes me think he's not a good guy at all. Judgmental maybe, but it's how I feel.

Yeah I guess I should have thought of that. Just look at the hoopla around JFK being the first Catholic President.

Based on what? A few minutes here and there and one game against a lion's defense who's secondary was/is atrocious? Tebow isnt great either, but claiming Flynn is better based on almost no evidence is kind of funny.

I can understand it in a sense - there's a lot of players who are just as "nice/good/clean-cut" and stay out of trouble and in many cases are a lot better at their particular position in comparison, but have never gotten this sort of attention/respect/adulation for simply being "a good guy" despite being a good or even great player. Seeing someone who has been above-average at best, mediocre on average, and downright terrible at worst getting all this attention irks them.

Flynn dismantled the Pats last year while ARod was concussed as well. He would've won had the coaching staff not fucked up.

Either I made up lies about the Boston Bomber or I fell for someone else's crap. Either way, I have absolutely no credibility and you should never pay any attention to anything I say, no matter what the context. Perm me if I claim to be an insider
You know who Tim Tebow reminds me of?

Will Ferrell from Elf.

Tebow was either raised in his missionary site in the Phllippines or inhis home schooled environment in FL. I'm sure that kept him from a lot of the influences that we may have encountered that made us more jaded.

So, when Tebow says, "I stopped to thank God, and then ran down to catch Demaryus, but I stopped to thank the Lord again, then I celebrated with my teammates." That's literally what he did.

Read that phrase in Will Ferrell in Elf-voice.

See?

I forgot about that game, still, not a lot of evidence either way. I do think Flynn will have a much longer career than Tebow, for what it is worth.

I'm not really sure why he gets a lot of hate. His teammates seem to love him, so that's good enough for me.

And I think he will eventually improve to resemble something of a professional quarterback. He's a better version of Michael Vick. He may not have the same outright athleticism that Vick has, but he's built in such a way that he can handle the physical play. Vick didn't really develop into a function quarterback until teaming up with Andy Reid and going to jail.

The thing I don't like about Tebow - well, moreso the media narrative - is that he's better than other players morally, in ways never before seen. There have been Christians in sports since the beginning of sports, especially in this country. Players have kneeled after touchdowns for decades, yet this was only trademarked when Tebow did it.

I like the fact that Tebow is someone who works hard, realizes he's not the best QB right now, and is focused on getting better. Any sports fan would want guys like that on their team. I also honestly think he can be a decent to good NFL QB.

From a guy who doesn't follow football, there's a lot of talk about him being overrated. Although, everything I've heard about him seems to indicate that he's generally a nice guy with at least some considerable skill. More I think about it, the fewer reasons I see for people to dislike him so much.

I think the media attention naturally makes you inclined to dismiss him; the signal to noise ratio is definitely a bit low when it comes to widespread reactions surrounding this guy.

Uh what? Michael Vick has one of the strongest arms in the NFL. The only things they have in common:

1. They're both running quarterbacks.
2. They suck/sucked early in their careers.

Tebow wishes he had half the arm of Michael Vick.

I don't remember anyone ever giving a shit about Reggie White being a minister, and he was a) far more outspoken than Tebow about his faith, and b) a far more dominant player on much better teams. Same with Kurt Warner:

wikipedia said:
Kurt and Brenda Warner are devout evangelical Christians. His faith first emerged on the international scene following the Rams' Super Bowl victory, where he was named the game's MVP:
Mike Tirico from ABC: "Kurt, first things first — tell me about the final touchdown pass to Isaac."
Kurt Warner: "Well, first things first, I've got to thank my Lord and Savior up above — thank you, Jesus!"[64]

Nine years later, upon leading the Cardinals to the franchise's first ever Super Bowl, Warner's response was similar:
Terry Bradshaw from Fox: "You're not going to like this, but you're the third oldest quarterback to ever play in the Super Bowl. How does that make you feel?"
Kurt Warner: "Everybody's going to be tired of hearing this, but I never get tired of saying it. There's one reason that I'm standing up on this stage today. That's because of my Lord up above. I've got to say thanks to Jesus, you knew I was going to do it, but I've got to do it. And secondly, I've gotta say thanks to you guys (motioning to the Arizona fans); when nobody else believed in us, when nobody else believed in me, you guys did. And we're going to the Super Bowl!

Most of the Tebow hate boils over from him being hated in college and him being very mediocre in several of his starts this year. If JJ Reddick had become a Robert Horry-like clutch player in the NBA right out of school he'd be one of the most talked about players in the league too.

His popularity stems from him being a winning college QB at a big-time program, the Broncos' unfathomable winning streak (in one of the worst divisions in football), his unorthodox style (the Broncos running the option not as a gimmick but as a gameplan which is almost never done in the NFL), being good-looking, and last but certainly least because he's an "aw-shucks" poster child for Christian America.

Vic always had the ARM though. His QB iq wasn't the best but that improved. Tebow throws like he is scared. Unless it is quick slant.

This isn't so surprising -- sports fans tend to be more conservative and more religious than the general populace, and the general populace is already quite religious.

Therefore, a nice, conservative religious guy who seems to make it against the odds is exactly the sort of player a large portion of sports fans would be particularly attracted to.

Tim Tebow's jersey was selling like hot cakes when he was the backup quarterback. His NFL popularity is almost solely based on off the field properties!

They're entirely different builds, even if the end results might be similar.

Vick is a small quarterback that can't take hits, and Tebow is built like a linebacker, or fullback. Vick has a cannon for an arm and amazing speed. Tebow runs more like Young, or McNabb if you want to compare his running style. They both throw over the top better than they throw underneath, but Vick was never throwing ten yard slants into the ground five yards short.

Now, I hate Vick for what he did, but come on, they're not the same.

I find the Tebow phenomenon entertaining. The praise, the criticisms, the hype, the hatred. Just funny to see the overblown reactions from both sides.

At least he is smart enough to rebuff all the potential Republican candidates for an endorsement.

So far. But I'm sure people will advise him to keep out of that.

Tebow's best throws are deep balls over the top. His underneath accuracy is terrible. Do you watch games at all?
