ESPN names Tim Tebow as America's most popular athlete playing today

Also what the hell, Michael Vick was three times the QB Tebow is from his very first day in the NFL.

Vick didn't win a Heisman or a national championship, and wasn't a controversial first round pick.

I know, I know, but it all factors into Tebow's media sensation.

I have no dislike of Tebow as a person or a football player. I dislike the media and the delusional fans hyping him up like he is even an average NFL QB. I dislike that an entire offensive system was built around him when there have been many more talented QBs that did not get the same treatment or opportunity as he was given.

Mostly this. I am fairly certain Tebow and I do not align on anything outside of loving football so all this 'miracle' nonsense ESPN and Skip Bayless prattle on about really grates me. I just want everyone to shut up about him. There are several actual quarterbacks playing at all-time great levels but get nudged out of the conversation for this mediocre-at-best QB who won a few games. Over-hyped story that cant die soon enough.

Also, LOL at those saying it has little to do with his religion. IT HAS EVERYTHING TO DO WITH HIS RELIGION! If he were Muslim, Hindi, Buddhist, a non-believer, or just not as outspoken about it (like nearly all other athletes) this would not have the traction it does. That 3% would be .3%. It has nothing to do with his success in college, as that is rarely mentioned anymore. It certainly helps that he is white, as well.

To me, he is completely uninteresting. Every time I hear him talk he never has anything of note to say. Just 'religion stuff' and 'player/coach-speak cliches about working hard and getting better'. He is the definition of milquetoast to me. Ned Flanders who can score on 3rd and Goal.

As if a White, Christian, Male, Millionaire, Quarterback in the United States needs propping up any more.

And to anyone who ever claims 'left-wing' media bias, I can gladly point them to Tebow Mania as evidence to the contrary.

I wish there were an alternative to ESPN >_< The way they endorse the headlines they create is ridiculous and annoying.

ESPN has built him up so high, the inevitable downfall is going to be delicious.

WTF? ESPN did nothing but trash the guy from the time he went into the NFL draft to the time when they finally figured out that the guy ws winning games and Tebow Talk = Ratings. Then, they knew they at least needed to keep the conversation going to continue to cash in, so they'd better find someone to say something complementary about him.

That's all it's been.

You can't say they "built him up so high" when they spent most of the time burying him.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I despise him, and it's exactly for the reason's you stated above.

ESPN is the same network that gave my city (Valdosta, GA) the Title Town nickname. I will always LOL ESPN. FYI, this town milks that to hell and back. Thanks ESPN.

I will never understand why people hate him. That is a strong word. He has never done anything to me to make me hate him. I enjoy watching him play, I enjoy watching him speak humbly about himself. Always putting his team mates first.

Like Kobe, he will never get the respect he deserves from the haters. Its very sad to see.

I hate hearing about him and that morphs into hating him despite it not really being his fault, which I am aware of.

I know I hate some of the viewpoints his particular brand of religion brings to the table that I can safely assume he believes as well.

I hate how all the talk turns to him being some sort of miracle-worker or that God, if such a thing exists, gives a fuck about football and is working through him in an Angels in the Outfield-type situation.

I hate how all this mention of 'how good of a person' he is implies that those that are not like him are not as good, as if there is only one track to being good.

And he and Kobe are nothing alike, Kobe is an all-time great, no one denies that. His hate comes from elsewhere.

He does make games exciting sometimes.
Most of the time it's painful to watch though.
He would be my choice too if I lived in America.

Neither should Vick

NFL Comeback Player of the Year (2010)
All-time NFL leading rusher for quarterbacks (4,948 yards

It has to be a weird situation for John Elway. On one hand, its pretty obvious that Tebow will never be a big time QB. On the other hand, he is the most popular player in the NFL right now. So, what do you do with him next year? I think he is probably back on the bench mid way through next season and gone not too long after that.

People say that Tebow gets hype for wrong reasons but he beat a team where one of the players gets attention and endorsement deals for having voluminous hair

I don't watch either the Broncos or Steelers (outside of last week's game) but this debate is kinda funny

FUCK shit like this.

I'm an atheist. Atheists are just as capable of doing something about starving children in Africa. They don't. Really not a fair argument to make, such a dumb double standard.

Starving Children exist just as much because of "god" as they do because of atheists (or ANYONE) doing nothing about it.

Polamalu is also one of the best defensive players in the league, plays ridiculously hard, has won a Super Bowl, is well-spoken and praises his teammates constantly, appears to be a very nice guy off the field, and was shown crossing himself several times throughout the game on Sunday.

Where is Polamalu Mania?

Sure, not being a quarterback is a large part of that but methinks his last name not sounding 'Murican and not being white plays just as large a role.

He's been in the league for 9 seasons. He's had plenty of publicity and specials in those 9 seasons. Hell he still has commercials just for his hair.

Did he ever have something during a season as ridiculous as Tebow? No, but he's a safety. He's not supposed to get as much attention at a QB. It's just how the league works.

The comic is just pointing out that it would be incredibly ironic if God really did help athletes (I just want to thank God for giving me the ability to play this game, and help us win today.. blah blah), while terrible things happen all over the world.

It has nothing to do with athletes ignoring the plight of the world

pro bowls don't really mean anything. It's not even that crazy that Tim could make it this year since no one goes to these things. I think he's the 2nd reserve.

edit: oh caught the chain of replies there talking about pro bowl caliber players. Nevermind then I guess. I still think pro bowl selections are worthless though, as are any all star selections in sports.

That's because you have very little going for you in your life.

And you know it's the truth.

Lebron, is that you?

Vick was a pro bowl QB last year and was still good this year. Vick is a different QB now than his days in Atlanta.

Anyone that says Vick last year wasn't top 3 in the NFC is a straight up liar.

This year? I'd probably take Rodgers, Brees and Manning over him.

Not really seeing the problem with this. He is an interesting story, he's played in entertaining games of late. Why not?

Come the Olympics no doubt Usain Bolt will be the most popular.

I'm sort of waiting for his 15 minutes of fame to be over, frankly.

He seems like a nice guy but (correct me if I'm wrong, because I know next to nothing about football stats) as far as top quarterbacks in the league go, he's nowhere near the top, right? From what I understand he's a pretty average quarterback who's been able to help pull-off some pretty amazing wins this season, which is why people are suddenly fascinated by him.

I don't think it's any secret that his squeaky-clean image and loud & proud Christianity have helped boost his popularity immensely (I saw hum being interviewed on Fox News by Sean Hannity for fuck's sake).

The best part about this post (aside from Vick's stats during 3 of those "Pro Bowl" seasons), is that unless Denver somehow wins this week, Tebow could very well be a Pro Bowler. Isn't he the 2nd alternate? If New England moves on then Brady won't be playing and I highly doubt Big Ben will play. So lets bump this in a few weeks lol.

Wait, are you trying to say that Polamalu hasn't been recognized after all these years? Are you shitting me? I guess Urlacher is 10x more popular too because he's white huh? I mean he's #2 on the list behind Tebow isn't he? Stop projecting your bullshit dude.

And the same thing too. At least 70% of the shit Skip Bayless says every day are things he's said a hundred thousand times already.

HE JUST WINS
I NEVER SAID HE'D MAKE A PRO BOWL

etc...

Herbstreit had the audacity to say he was predicting "some big plays" in the Alabama-LSU game. He said this multiple times the day of the game like it was actually a prepared answer he gave serious thought to the night before.

Pro Bowl is a joke as it is. Veterans make it in years after they're past their primes, simply on reputation and players even try to get out of playing in the game when they can. They simply want to qualify to activate any contract clauses that kick in with it, then claim injury and let an alt take their place.

But it's a game 'for the fans', or at least it should be. Let Tebow in if he's the most popular player.

So? If we had the total QB in yardage or TDs or whatever stat you want to pull out of your ass, the Super Bowl champions would have been completely different.

This combined with the fact that it's flag football for players to "have fun" doesn't really do much. Pro Bowls really don't mean much besides a popularity contest.

I am just saying that there are plenty of other NFL players who also possess similar traits of Tebow that are making him a story. They may also happen to be better at their position than he is.

Polamalu has gotten plenty of recognition over his career but note the word 'career'. Some people act like the fact that Tebow hasn't been enshrined in Canton yet is some egregious oversight to his blindingly amazing athletic feats and passion even though he is only 8-5 (I think) as a starter.

And? If Tebow starts losing or sucks next season the media will drop him quicker than you can blink. I said career because he wasn't the biggest story this season, just like many other players weren't. I'm not sure how that proves it's just a conspiracy theory that NFL only likes white players.

Vick had a career year last season and won't top that season again. He fell back down to earth this past season. He's not a top level QB, much less a top NFC QB. His basis is running, once he loses that he's done.

He's the only guy on the list that isn't a cheating scumbag or egotistical asshole. His play doesn't deserve it but how well a player performs and how well they are liked doesn't always go hand in hand.

I'm ok with this.

Edit: Aaron Rodgers is pretty cool too.

Bubububu but the cancer patients!!

1) Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers
2) Tim Tebow, Denver Broncos
3) Troy Polamalu, Pittsburgh Steelers
4) Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints
5) Tom Brady, New England Patriots
6) Clay Matthews, Green Bay Packers
7) Michael Vick, Philadelphia Eagles
8) Eli Manning, New York Giants
9) Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys
10) Miles Austin, Dallas Cowboys

7 out of 10 of the NFLs best selling jerseys are of white players while the NFL is nearly 70% black.

Not saying everyone on this list (outside of Tebow) isn't a great player but to act like race plays no part is very naive.

I don't know, I have never heard anyone not from LA mention Kobe with the greats. There is a bad East Coast Bias against him. It makes me mad.

As Far as Tebow, I understand what you are saying, but most of that doesn't come from himself, its the fans that overdo it. He himself hasn't done anything wrong.

I cheer him because he is trying so hard to accomplish what everyone says he can not. Be an NFL QB. I also think if his personality is true, it is one of the more interesting ones out there.

I guess haters appreciate athletes talking about making it rain, and how many strippers they have impregnated, beating their wives etc.............

Where is TJ Yates mania?

The Texans were 8-3 when Yates began starting for them. Not the same intrigue as a QB taking over a garbage 1-4 team and leading them into the playoffs. Furthermore IIRC he was only 2-3 as a starter in the regular season. There was no chance for all the late game winning heroics that there was with Tebow. He just isn't the same type of story. A better question is why was there never a Skelton Mania but he plays in the desert and was not in position for the playoffs so meh.
