Everwild has been in development (pre-production) for almost 5 years, according to a linkedin profile

Probably this is normal, only a small amount of people working on it for a year or so if it wasn't the main focus of the studio when they first started development.

Hopefully we'll see what its all about at E3, its pretty exciting because we know absolutely nothing really.
 
Isn't this the game that the developer themselves claimed they didn't know what it was yet?

Might come out before Elder Scrolls 6.
 
I don't know why but I am quite excited by this game. Rare doing great with SoT so I know that there is a good chance that Everwild will come together

I don't understand why people still bring it up. They said they we're figuring it out, but the most important thing is that they said it a long time ago.

Well, they said it last year. June 21 to be precise.
"Part of the reason we haven't talked a lot about Everwild is because we're still feeling a lot of these things out. We're still playing around with gameplay ideas."
 
Early processes have a core team, usually previz, art, tech tools, narrative, studio heads etc. It's not crunch type dev during that time so 5 years is likely 3 serious years of dev. Given Sea of Thieves having rotating sustain teams I'd hazard a guess 2-3 years of serious dev for Everwild max. The LinkedIn profile is for narrative, so at least they've been on the story/lore elements since early on.

For as long as we've known about this game I'm surprised we still know almost nothing about it. It looks really pretty though.

Sounds like development hell.
The lack of firm release date means nothing. They likely have internal targets but don't want to announce anything as things can change. Even Sony doesn't give release dates for a lot of their games.

also most of their resources would have probably been tied up on sea of thieves. Just because they started 5 years ago doesn't mean it's a full effort by them the whole time. You don't need the planners, managers, concept artists, writers and game designers working as hard during the last x years of development when things are mostly set in stone and you are concerned with finishing and fixing what was already planned and not planning new things. So you get them spending time on what's next. Then as resources free up you can start doing more sophisticated planning/designing involving the tech people with things like prototyping and figuring out the tech details.

Sea of thieves also did better than expected due to streamers and probably got a lot more support than initially planned
 
No offense to these guys, but how do you have a game in development this long and not know what the actual gameplay is supposed to be? Or do they know?

It does mean something. It means it's not coming out in 2021.

And probably not coming out in early 2022 either.
 
Can't speak for Rare, but I'm pretty sure they have figured it out by now.

At this point Rare needs to pull a Viva Piñata style one of a kind genre success. Because I'm as confused as I am interested, but patience is thinning
 
Microsoft didn't really explain what the game was when they showed it off either.

I thought it was an RPG but apparently not. So they STILL don't know what the game is?

Watch it be a racing title where everyone runs on foot.
 
I hope it's not an MMO, I really like the art style & even though we've only seen "in engine" footage I'm sure they'll be pretty close with the gameplay I just hope it's at most a co-op type of game and not an MMO that has big ideas but launches bare bones and has no real point to it like so many others.
 
Honestly, I hated the direction of their concept trailer when they showed it. I'm not even sure I can put into words why. It just felt so... hipster-neo-druidical, and for whatever reason, that hits my brain as an awful combination.

It did seems to have a cohesive art/world direction, so it's got that working for it. Maybe it'll end up being one of my favorite games (Rare has surprised me before). But as of now, they could scrap it or pivot to something else and I wouldn't regret the loss one bit.

That's how long it takes to create an entirely new universe from scratch. For example I remember reading about HZD all the way back in late 2009 (nobody knew the name back then obviously, not even GG themselves), there were already leaks/job listings saying that GG is working on a open-world sci-fi RPG, there was an interview with Hermen Hulst some time later where he did confirm they have a small team of people dedicated to think about something new other than Killzone for the studio's future expansion, and as we all know now that game was Horizon which was released in 2017, so 8 years after the pre-production/concept phase started.
 
You'd think they'd have figured out what game they were making during all that time in pre-production

Issue is a lot of the studio was still supporting Sea of Thieves. So they didn't have everyone working on the project. I would assume the last couple years they have most of the studio creatives, lead designers and programmers working on it. But it was weird to have a trailer for the game and show so in-game shots then do a interview and say "you're still figuring out what the gameplay loop is". To me that shows MS allowing this "idea" to go forward without proof of concept to higher ups. And I would assume, and I mean assume as in I'm guessing that Matt Booty wasn't in his position yet when Phil or someone said yes to the project without needing any kind of vertical slice or proof of concept.
 
Trailer looked pretty interesting, shows how much Microsoft have diversified their first party output which they were often criticized for years ago. Sea Of Thieves turned into a big success so hopefully see more of this at E3.
 
It's kind of weird that both Microsoft and Sony have exclusives with Wild in the title stuck in development hell.
lol yes, it's the curse of the setting I guess 😂

I keep forgetting about WiLD. Then I remember it every month, and then I forget about it again next week. I hope it does finally appear during their Summer show this year.
