Evolve Big Alpha Impressions/bugs/glitches thread

Well after unlocking some new characters I would change a few minor things.

Griffin on the team makes it alot harder to track the monster. Maggie gets daisy who can sniff out direction, revive and clutch escape from a full team incap. Griffin gets sound spikes which require you to spread around the map. This generally means the team has no idea where to go at the start and ends up just wandering anywhere without direction.

The sound spikes can be destroyed by the monster, fair enough. But i have noticed monsters upright and causing chaos without the spikes activating. The should be more sensitive. Sneaking is alright but maybe something like eating or knocking over a tree should cause a ping from that sound sensor, but not give a precise location. It just seems griff teams are easily on the other side of the map clueless and need a bit of a help is all.

The other is Bucket. Love everything about the guy but the immobile body during UAV. Theres the mechanics in place to let bots control the body why dont they just make the body passively follow daisy style while UAV is active? It's really annoying to mark the monster then spending ages catching up with everybody else unless you get caught by wildlife in which case you'll be on the next drop ship.

I mean it just makes too much sense right? He's a damn robot just have him yell 'Autopilot taking control' and have him wander.

Dats my 2 cents.

I can't even get the game to run without stutter/lag. Connection seems fine since all players are 3-4 bars. Changing graphics settings does nothing. Low or Ultra or inbetween with FXAA the game will stutter.

I'm not sure if the 2Gig VRAM I have is the cause or something else bottlenecking. But I can't even play a round without the slide-show/freezing getting in the way.

It's not the VRAM cause I have a 2GB R7 260X and I don't stutter. I get pretty smooth FPS.

I've been playing on PC and if its one thing u do enjoy about this game, it's hiding in bushes as the monster. It is really satisfying and people really chase the direction they thought you went, but you're in a bush right next to them.

Do you have an Nvidia card? I may be completely off base here but I've noticed a lot of complaints from Nvidia users and performance.

Damn, not one d/c? You got lucky.

I did D/C and ended up in the same room playing the monster again i dunno. I feel kinda lucky I guess. Kraken is really an overpowered p.o.s, once a teammate goes down he baits the rest of the team. He also has some distortion ability that really makes it hard to focus him. Not to mention that he has some teleport ability.

Playing on:
Windows 8
i5-4670k
GTX 780

Have everything turned up with Very High Textures and Tessellation on.

So far I am mostly confused. I've played once as Goliath and Kraken and once as Hank. Seems like there might be a cool game in here, but I don't know what anything does yet.

Edit: hoping for a bit more tutorial in the main game, though the quick run through before a match helps. I like the style as well. Since this game is going to live or die based on population I'm hoping it can get people playing long enough to build that community. The 4v1 concept is cool.

So far I really like the game but the loading times are putting me off playing. Also matchmaking isn't the best, an online only game lives and dies by how good the matchmaking is so I hope it improves by release.

I do think the hunters could use some more jetpack fuel or something. I keep gravitating towards the fuel regen and still end up low on it a lot, and it's one of the bigger factors in a Kraken fight. The attacks are really easy to dodge, but you can't keep it up for very long.

Harpoon traps feel bugged or something. They just do nothing, waste of time to even use them unless you're guarding the reactor. In which case they just get broken in 1 millisecond because the monster is constantly spamming attacks anyways.

I never even notice them when I'm the monster.

Is this while shooting them in front of the monster in a fight or something?

They have an activation time that takes a bit, so they need to anticipate where he'd go later instead of being dumped right on/around him. The other trapper just has a Harpoon gun that directly tethers the monster which is really effective when shooting their back, since they have to turn around to break it.

Loading long as hell on PC too.

Maybe it's because I play with a four-person party when we've played, but I've played over 20 matches with them, all four of us find others to face against pretty instantly, it takes about 20-30 seconds to then get to the customization screen, and then 20-30 seconds once everyone has selected their character and perk.

I did not play much of the alpha. It honestly wasn't that fun. Really surprising too because I actually had a lot of fun when I played it at PAX East. I probably won't pick it up.

I didn't realize Lazarus could revive wildlife. If you kill one of the big monsters for their buff, then revive them, the monster can't just freely grab it if he comes across the corpse.

First time playing this again since the first day of the alpha and I've got to say the load times for this game are even more horrendous than I remember. Even Destiny's weren't this bad.

can someone post a screenshot of the ideal gamma setting? I always struggle with selecting the right gamma when there is options like these. Its says adjust the image until the circle is barely visable, and the paw print is clearly visible. Where do I draw the line to discover the correct gamma for my set? how clear should the paw print be compared to the circle?

Performance on my PC on Medium isn't exactly great as I get hitches, anything higher or with tessselation on I get a slideshow of epic proportions.

This is on a GTX580 1.5gb, so it could be VRAM issues and I need to upgrade both my system ram and my graphics card.

The load times are long and overall the game has moments where it is pretty great, but I'm already encountering the community that scared me away from Left 4 Dead what with people screaming insults at new players learning the game or people who don't play team based games or multiplayer games all time or only for short bursts(like myself). I did better the more I played and figured out the classes but by that point I was tired of being yelled at even though I mentioned I was having performance issues, and sometimes you get pretty unlucky when it comes to not watching your corners and getting cornered by the monster or running out of Jetpack fuel mid jump.

The game is good but I don't think its the greatest thing ever.

But it does make me like Co-op.

Monsters are too fast, hunters too slow. We just spend the whole time hunting him down. Daisy is so slow, and even if you find him, he can run away so fast.. You have to catch him while he's busy, but if it's an experienced player it's very hard to even catch up to him...

It's interesting playing a game so early that every game is a learning experiences. I had a good run with the monster, then I started dying, but I find every time I'm learning something new about the hunters. My first Lazurus was a very confusing affair, and I'm still trying to figure out why sometimes I don't seem to have any abilities as a monster. They said it was from harpoon traps, but I don't think I was trapped...

The levels are small, you are supposed to cut him off.

Although I think I am on a 8 winning streak now with a monster or so. Also manage to win as a hunter though.

Best feel is when a trapper is catching up to a sneaking Monster and laying down a dome before he knows you're there and then him going like wtf. Hilarious.

Overall the game is going to be balancing nightmare, especially if they have hopes of competitive play.

I mean, they've got a fundamental problem on their hands with the asymmetrical team sizes.

4 organized, high level hunters on voice comms will always be dramatically more effective than 4 random goobers from matchmaking. But the solo monster is always pretty much the same, doesn't need to rely on anything but his own skill/experience.

So you need to balance the monster such that he stands a chance against a good organized team, or else that group of 4 will NEVER lose. And most likely end every round in under 5 minutes.

But if the monster is strong enough to beat a group like that, it'll be nearly impossible for a group of randoms to win unless the monster is extremely inexperienced. Case in point, Kraken seems to be balanced around a competent team of hunters, and even then it's close. Good luck beating a good Kraken with randoms, closest I've come is his last red bar. And that's with a team I'd won 4 rounds in a row with.

Moreover,

A good monster is going to determine if the game is fun for anyone. A bad monster (of which I am one) will end almost any match in under 5 minutes with no challenge.

A good monster will make the game a ton of fun for everyone. Except the monster.

I find controlling the monster to be horribly boring.

Just got the alpha on my PS4 and my god, is it me or is the game terribly unresponsive/laggy in terms of controls? It genuinely feels like its running at 25FPS at most. Either that or playing games at 60FPS has spoiled console gaming for me. :3

I agree with this mostly which is why monster is really low on priority for selection, but when I do end up playing as the monster, while it's not the team working hard kind of fun, it can be pretty cathartic atm. You're a beast that lays it down pretty thick. But yeah, you need to build to that, unless you unlocked Kraken.

Wow thats bad

I played this on XB1 over the weekend as that's where I had a code. The game looks/plays fine, but as others have said the load times are pretty long.

Overall, the game is just not my bag. First of all, if you are playing against a good monster, you spend most of the time tracking him down, and by that time he is level 2/3 and despite seemingly pumping a ton of damage into him he always seems to wipe the team out.

Secondly, I am just not a fan of these role-based team games in general. I'm not good at MP in most FPSs (I can hold my own in Halo but that's about it) so when I take on a role in a team like this I constantly feel like I'm letting the team down because I'm not doing what I'm supposed to be doing (i.e. buffing the right people, trying to stay alive, setting traps in the right places, etc.) when what I really want to do is just shoot the monster. It's just not fun for me. I never played as the monster, but something tells me I would have been slaughtered by the team if I had.

I think the game could be fun for people, just not for me.

Playing as the monster is really not fun. It would probably be more fun if they changed player counts to two monsters versus four to six hunters. Because as it stands, playing as monster is a lonely, boring experience.

IF you can get into a game (on PS4), it runs well, no problems to speak of. Getting into a game is another story. And then playing the game...

I only really got to play as the Tracker and I enjoyed that but felt too easy. When I played as a Medic, I notice my (different) team didn't do so well? I never saw a cage deployed, barely saw the tethers, no shield shot...just bad teammates.

Barely got to play as a monster and he is odd to control.

IF this is the only time we can play it, guess it will be a big pass.

I think part of that is intended. It allows both types of people to enjoy the game: the lone wolves who mute everyone and usually hate relying on others to win will probably love playing as the monster.

That being said, I still think the monster player will have a hell of a time against an organized group.

'alpha'

But yeah, game is laggy on PC, too.

I played for an hour last night and I have to say this is the first game I genuinely don't like in a while. Gonna try again today and see if my opinion changes.

While the Alpha is at least mildly entertaining, after all the hype around Evolve, I am fairly disappointed with the experience as a whole. My thoughts;

- The tracking process devolves into running around randomly and following blue footprints and/or Daisy. I was expecting some cool visual cues, and maybe some devices that would allow us to get a look at where the monster has been and what it has been doing. Instead it's just run around with three other people until the find the monster.
- The combat feels straight forward and unsatisfying. It's just, drop a bubble around the monster and shoot it. Sure, as the medic I get to heal teammates, as support I can shield, and each class has a variety of abilities, but the basic premise is just don't die and shoot the monster until it dies. It doesn't feel intense, intimidating, or strategic and the guns feel pretty dull to use.
- The game relies extremely heavily on other players to reach it's gameplay potential. L4D did as well, but it's even more front and center here. Which is a big risk because often times, games can be quickly over before anything remotely exciting happens.
- Visually, it doesn't feel like a next-gen game all that much. Considering the game is really pretty small in scope, I was expecting nicer visuals, animations and physics. It feels like a last-gen game with some small next-gen spruces. The snow effects on the one map are cool, but other than that, there's nothing too wow-worthy.
- The atmosphere is pretty disappointing. I don't feel creeped out, lost, like I'm hunting or like I'm being hunted. I just feel like I'm running around until I find the monster and occasionally shooting some kind of animal, most of which just keel over and die in a shot or two.
- The progression system feels just fine the way it is. I have no problem with it, and I did find the prospect of unlocking new characters and perks, etc, to be one of the reasons that I continued playing. But I feel like the core gameplay experience just isn't all that strong.

I am willing to chalk up the ridiculously long loading times, poor matchmaking and server issues to the fact that the game is in alpha status. But playing the alpha has made me drop Evolve down my list from "buying" to "eh might buy." While I think Evolve is a great concept, the realization is underwhelming due to the things that I posted above and possibly the pressures Turtle Rock felt to try and keep the game fast paced and "exciting" for the mainstream, itchy trigger finger gamer. When the reality is, this isn't a game that should be for that type of gamer. It should slow down a bit, showcase more nuances and intricacies and deliver a deep, atmospheric and tense gameplay experience.
