I didn't watch any so I wouldn't know, but I imagine there are character breakdown videos available by this point.
I'd suggest starting with Reinhardt, Lucio, or Soldier 76. They're all fairly straightforward heroes.
I have a sick Mercy IMP skin but Lucio's just a better healer overall so I always end up using him instead of Mercy. His alt fire is hella powerful.
Really glad they didn't go with the ice queen archetype. This way we got mittens and puffy parkas and drawing smiley faces in frost
And I can't play it for 3 days
there are a few training modes and multiple levels you can play against ai so I wouldn't worry much. It's a very straight forward game at its core and most of the nuance doesn't matter a ton at first

Reinhardt is hard, man. For a tank I'd suggest d.va.
A good mercy is game breaking. Her ult does more than lucio ever could. He's a lot more fun to play though

Why can't you play it for so long? That's an eternity to not be playing Overwatch.
I was able to convince 5 people to switch to Lucio during an Arcade match and it was the most stupidly broken shit ever, just constant "LETS BREAK IT DOWN" spamming every like 4 seconds.
We managed to force an appointment with our bosses for Tuesday, because we cannot work in such conditions and with so few people. I know that I will not be quiet and will tell everything out loud.

That's why you play lucio. His healing is passive and his gun is my second favorite in the game (after d.va's pistol)

They're a pain in the ass to deal with if he's using them to defend. I can get behind them as tracer but I usually don't have the health to deal with them unless they're isolated. I'm better off 1v1'ing Bastion.
He's great on defense. Not as much on offense
Necessary pretty much. Aim assist is only on console
On PC? I dunno. I think there are some helpers internally for controllers on PC, but I'd recommend going to KB/M anyway, especially if you're going with one of the more twitchy characters like Tracer or Hanzo or Windowmaker

the last competitive fps I played was bad company 2 on xbox360 so I'll be pretty rusty I suspect
back in high school I used to play quake 3 arena on pc for hours on end so I'm hoping it comes back to me

Bad company 2 was the last for me too but on PS3. I'm easily in top half in terms of skill in overwatch.
