well, in real life they are bullshit. Ostensibly only effective for applying concussive blows to people wearing plate armor (the spikes are for grip to transfer the energy into the target rather than bounce off) but it's too easy to get your weapon tangled up and become disarmed.
in fantasy they're really cool, though. the witch king guy in return of the king had a neat one IIRC.
also bullshit: katanas, throwing knives, fire arrows, and dual wielding

They flails you usually see in movies (and even sometimes in museums) weren't even used in medieval times or at least rarely. Peasants used them, but those looked very differently, with a very long handle.

Flails in real life didn't have long chains. The chain would be short enough that the handle could be gripped without your hand ever being at risk (though they rarely were used in battle, they did exist for some reason). The weapon proposed has little resemblance to anything in real life, but it's a fun thing in fantasy.
Also I know how to tie a Siberian hitch.

That's fine. We'll just make it a long rod and short chain. The only impractical weapons I have in the game right now are buster swords. I'm actually trying to be earnest about the weapons and armor design.
