Fall '04 Anime Season

Windy Tales deserves mention for its animation. There are techniques and character motions in that that I've never seen used anywhere else - not to mention that it's a beautiful show and the style is really cool.

Also true. Windy Tales is a very cool looking show. Again, it uses a fairly unorthodox style, so if you don't take to the style, you might not like its look.

It's too bad no one other than Deathsquad has done it since I refuse to watch their shows as they're an AJ offshoot.

Their subs aren't the greatest, but they're not really bad, either. Middle of the road. A few errors here and there, but for the most part solid enough.

I find that any group that doesn't make the karaoke/fansub credits distracting and annoying automatically gets a nod by me. I wish more groups would be like Lunar and Soldats by *not* plastering their name on the anime title in the opening.

I'm really enjoying Gankutsuou right now; I'm wondering how different it will be from the novel, and I got used to the patterns after a minute. Gundam SEED Destiny is cool, but I'm going to have to save episodes and watch it all in one go.

I'm surprised to find myself enjoying Tsukuyomi and Yakitate!! Japan. The former is a nice blend of comedy and style, the latter is my fix for over-the-top humour. I haven't seen Genshiken yet, but if it's anything like the manga, I'm definitely going to follow it.

The other shows aren't too bad, so I'll watch them if I come across them. I was hoping that there'd be an anime this season that is as awesome as Monster, but I guess that's kind of hard to pull off. =P

thus far everything I've tried watching has been pretty bad... I have also reaffirmed that I HATE that fansub groups keep the japanese names lots of times... I have now downloaded the first episode of Gankutsuou THREE FUCKING TIMES now each time thinking, "I don't think I've wathced this yet."

has anyone yet come across a non gundam/non kiddy action anime this season yet? =\

My main problem is that any anime trying to be cute/funny in any way whatsoever just absolutely disgusts me. And fanservice *shudder* is almost always a dead giveaway that I'm going to hate what I'm trying to watch.

or something with a more serious story like monster would also be quite tasty. If knowing my preferences at all helps

lately I finished alchemist, pretty awesome. Also watching Shura no Toki which has been a far better show than I expected going into it. Also watching monster and enjoying it quite well. Before those... last thing that I can remember liking is Last Exile.

I wish more groups would translate the credits in the opening. That way it would be possible to pick up a few names (like the director, character designer, music composer and so on), which could prove useful later on.

I dunno...umm, Beck, maybe?

To a certain degree I kind of agree though. I've seen a bunch of shows that are decent or "pretty good" but nothing that jumps out as being particularly special or excellent in any way.

Maybe I'm spoiled from having Monster and Samurai Champloo both debuting last season along with Full Metal Alchemist running strong at the same time.

Narutos going through a bad phase at the moment but might pick up after the next few episodes when the filler arc ends *crosses fingers*. Anyway, Yakitate is about baking bread so dont expect lots of action/fighting or anything. Id definitely reccomend it though.
Does anyone know how long Yakitate is set to run for?

From what I've seen so far...

Beck > Yakitate Japan, Seed Destiny > Mai Hime, Gankutsuou, Bleach

^^alll are preety good but so far, but that's my ranking. Haven't seen Windy Tales and Sunabozou though.

My favorites this season are:

Yakitate Japan! (So original, hilarious, great animation, great characters)
Gundam Seed Destiny (Awesome just like Seed)
Beck (I like it. I thought the engrish was hilarious)
Bleach (Reminds me of Midori No Hibi without Midori)

What's up with Monster? Did they take a break?

School Rumble rocks. It's probably the only fall 04 anime i'm going to watch.

I watched the first ep of that a few hours ago. Definetly my fav show of the season so far. The whole chase scene at the end was great.
Especially the mountain hairpin where the show turned into a Initial D for a second :lol

I'm going to watch the DQ anime too.

Mai-Hime and Beet are the only ones I've been following for the last two weeks. I don;t like anything else being show except for Yakitate which is mildly amusing.

Dai finally got subbed but I'm not a fan of Shining. I might just download it to check it out but I can just stick to the manga since I have all the tankoubans for it.

Saw the first episode of Yakitate!! Japan, and it's a bit hard to say where it will go next. It's not hilarious but still fun to watch and shows some promise, especially since the subject has some interest for me. I liked the explanation about his "golden hands". I thought it was going to be some magic-like ability that's unexplainable, but it was far from it. Actually makes sense, very positive surprise. But it seemed like that girl could "sense" his golden hands just by looking at him. I hope that's not true. :/

I was surprised to see that Kaidoh has switched from playing tennis to baking bread, BTW. ;)

Oh and, I liked the ending credits, where you got to see a real person baking bread. I hope he'll do different kinds of bread for every episode. hehe :p

wow this thread is still alive?
anyway i got to watch more anime, and this is basically what i felt:

School Rumble - rocks, although the manga is better (some of the jokes in the manga were changed in the anime, wtf)
Genshiken - great show... although if you're shameful of being an otaku, you'll hate it
Gankutsuou - nice style, nice plot, although not a must-download for me
Yakitate! Japan - I love the manga, but the anime is unwatchable
Monster - perfect, like the manga
Mai-Hime - stopped watching after first ep, pointless show
Kannaduki no Miko - was interested because of the shoujo ai themes, but the plot is stupid. sucks since this apparently is coming from one of my favorite character designers (Kaishaku)
Utakata - mildly interesting
Futakoi - stupid and retarded, stopped watching after first ep

I haven't downloaded anything else, since they didn't strike my fancy. Although I might check out Gantz.

I... still feel the same as i did in my last post even after having watched some stuff now. Still looking for something that doesn't suck =\

sadly... the best new thign I've come across is I have remained slightly amused by downloding Rozen Maiden episodes and skipping ahead to the fight scenes.

I recommend you guys check out Tokyo Underground. It's good, but there's a lot of stuff that goes unexplained, it feels like it was cut short due to lack of time or something. Actually, it's pretty average, but the music and action is top notch.

Mai-HiME is a nice amalgamation of tons of genres and still hasn't degenerated into the cesspool that it could've been with the show's setup. Hisayuki's character designs are also roxxors.

Tokyo Undergound is reminiscent of Flame of Recca somewhat, I thought it was alright but the end was ruined, as usual.

Pellham you're better off tracking down the Gantz manga rather than the anime.

Its all shit. I havent kept up with any new shows. :(

I guess I watch Melody of Oblivion but they havent subbed past episode 15 in at least a month and a half...and the shows already over! God!

Current stuff I'm following:

One Piece - Zoro owns you.

Monster - Usually watch in batches of 5+ eps to maintain interest, but cool show.

nbz - I hate myself.

Beck - ENGRISH OVERLOAD

Genshiken - Uneven at times, but fun in a suicidal way.

Bleach - Desperately hoping it picks up.

That's *it*, and it's mostly not very compelling. I've been batch torrenting older stuff and rewatching dvds and dvdrs. Meh.

Edit:

Oh, and I'm of course following 2nd Gig, but eps come out so infrequently that I always forget I'm still with it.

Don't worry, IT will pick up later, just wait&see, the wait will not be useless, believe me!

BTW, where are the episode(subbed) 5 & 6 of Yakikate Japan? they were already aired in Japan right?

on an unrelated note... yet... related due to being about anime.. soo... on a related note?

does anyone know wtf is going on with shura no toki releases? I think its licensed so don't tell me where to get episodes or anything, I just am curious about the release scedule. There was a long time where I thought the show was cancelled or something cuz it just sorta stopped at around episode 16 or 17. But then a couple months later a few more episodes were released. And now its stopped again. What gives?

oh yeah about the Bleach anime...
... they totally changed stuff around, to the point where the anime is unwatchable. For some reason the anime just doesn't capture the energy of the manga. Actually, I enjoyed the first two volumes of the manga, but then it's starting to degenerate into a fight of the week-style story, and as a result i've stopped reading it. Pretty sad, I thought Bleach would be another 'guilty pleasure' type show much like Tenshi na Konamaiki was for me.

The Manga goes through some big shakeups around V5-7 that snowball into something much bigger for more volumes to come. It's a lot like Naruto in that regard - you think it's going to be some journey/quest thing, and then you get an exam or something else unexpected to totally change the direction of the series.

The anime seems alright to me, a bit easier to get across the pacing of the show, but I get the feeling I won't really enjoy much of it until 25-30 eps down the line.

sounds interesting. It was vol 3 or 4 that made me give up on bleach, but I'll check into vol 5+ and see how it goes..

..although since i'm reading the US manga, it'll probably be a while before they come out. :p

You're way more patient than I am -- I dropped it after about the third episode. I'm thinking of trying the manga though.

I have to say this season hasn't been that great... the only shows I'm really folllowing are Yakitate Japan (hilarious), Mai Hime (which had promise but is really starting to stink), Gankutsuou (in a slump, but episode 8 looks good), Windy Tales (I've only seen the first episode but it's so uniquely interesting...) and Monster (haven't actually started this one yet, but I've heard so many good things about it that I have to see it).

Has anyone watched Rozen Maiden? If so how is it? I might pick that one up, the first episode wasn't bad, but the main character seems like a total jerk.

By the way, Viewtiful Joe stinks it up big time. I thought I'd try it because the game is so good, but man... that show. What a waste of time. I was bored out of my mind trying to finish that ridiculous, nonsensical first episode---Never again.

I've only had time to watch GSD and Beck weekly (they rock!!!). I'm still downloading Naruto and Monster though. What else should I check out? o_O

PS: Bleach = meh and the bread anime is ok, I guess -_-

What's out this season that's nice and angsty? (Think Koi Kaze or Saikano :))
