Fallout 4 - Reviews thread

Don't want to come across all XBO fanboy but didn' the DF review suggest that texture pop in was consistent across both platforms.

Clearly your img is one particular XBO issue but not a consistent issue is it?

I think he is just stating how shit the textures are in the game regardless of platform

Well yeah. You're right of course! I think I'm gonna wait a few days before asking around though, it's probably gonna take a while before people properly know what they think of it.

Reviewers meanwhile did have the chance to find that out already so that doesn't mean I won't be frustrated over this. Bethesda did a big revamp on their system, you'd think more'd at least mention something.

I am being somewhat pessimistic, but I'd love to be wrong. It's not strange to think that if reviewers find it works just fine they should say so is it? It's a big change from previous games either way.

Ben Moore talked about it in his GameTrailers review. Said it was a step back from the previous system.

Curious as to why Destructoid has been giving 7 for most of the major games. I mean Halo 5 got 7, Rise of the Tomb Raider 7.5, Fallout 4 7.5, only Black Ops recently got more with 8.5

The reviews are well done. Maybe they're just tired of good games getting instant 9's etc.

I think they are tired of the series which is understandable but should not influence your rating. They should rate every game as objectively as possible on its own, how is this game if you have never played one of them.

things like GTA4

Actually I don't know if you've been gaming when it has been released, but the game was widely praised back then by critics and gamers alike. If you take a look at "helpful" user reviews you'll find out that the most of them are left after 2008 and even 2009. I would say that GTA4 didn't age well and the games to blame for it are RDR and GTA5, both of which addressed the majority of issues and aged better.

So yeah, user reviews can still be invaluable if you invest some time into analyzing the context.

Watching the video review for Gamespot, but cannot help but notice a disconnect between the review score and the spoken review. This looks like an old game, not much improved from Fallout 3...basically a glorified expansion pack.....and after all these years, shouldn't we expect better?

I'm actually surprised how high these scores are, after spending a couple of days with the game I was expecting 8's.

What I enjoy is the clear hypocrisy in play here.

You have complete technical shitshows like Dragon's Dogma; a game with such awful tearing and framerate, I personally couldn't play it due to headaches. However, I constantly see people on GAF heaping praise on that game.

Fallout 4 has occasional frame hitches? WHAT A PIECE OF SHIT.

Fuck off.

TBH I think it's the fallout formula that people enjoy. I clearly haven't played the game but there should be minor changes but nothing drastic.

if Fallout 4 had even a tenth of the amazing combat as Dragon's Dogma, it would probably get more of a pass.

That said, I still see tons of people shit on Dragon's Dogma's framerate. Why do you think people have been clamoring for a PC release for so long?

Witcher 3 now has long load times on death on PS4 and it would drop frames at release. I LOVE the game but you'd think with Fallout getting the shit it has the last few days the same would be said for these games.

But no. DD, W3 are games that GAF adores so they get passes.

every time dragons dogma comes up people want a remaster for it because it runs like shit. Not sure how people talked about it at release though

thats just not true either, there are alot of people on gaf that actually stopped playing tw3 because of technical problems and waited for patches to fix stuff. Same goes for bloodborne before anyone brings that up

I was gaming, bought it full price. Think I spent 3 hours before getting bored. PS2 games were the best. GTAV is overall better than 4, so they learned.

So yeah, I do not buy into hype anymore because of it.

This thread is getting good now. Rage over an ambitious last gen game.

Hang on, are you arguing that someone's impression of a game is wrong even though they have played the game and you have not?

I'm saying that every footage I've seen of the console version I've seen frames dropping. Most reviews are even mentioning it.

So I don't know if Jim has better hardware than us or is just wired to not see them. But frame drops exist in the console versions of Fallout 4.

I'm not trying to detract from people enjoying this game. That's great if they do. I think I, too, will enjoy it when I eventually get my hands on it years from now. But seeing the fluctuating standards some of you have, though they are yours and yours only, are a bit annoying. Bad framerate for a game like this being acceptable? So, in other words, another game with bad framerate may not be acceptable if it's a game or genre you like less? It's not like we are talking a drop from 60 fps to 30 fps, where anything in between is still very much playable, since the lowest standard is always 30 fps. We are talking about dips into the 20s and teens.

I guess what I'm looking for is acknowledgement and acceptance that this game has issues, even if it may be great, instead of excuses.

90 Meta with framerate issues? Other aspects of the game must be phenomenal. Great to see.

Pretty much always been the case with Bethesda games - people think they get a pass on technical issues, but the reality is that there is simply so much great stuff in the game that its impossible for any amount of hitches or bugs to really drag down the score.

Ok so Ive never played a Fallout game, if I jump in now what am I missing and is the general consensus to wait till they patch the performance (will be playing on PS4)

And I have not, at ANY point, said they don't exist.

The combat in Dragon's Dogma is overrated and the world sucked plus the few characters in the one lone single ugly town in the game were garbage, and the visuals are Generic Fantasy 101. That game was also a technical MESS.

Fallout series has decent combat and more importantly a huge interesting world and many NPCs to interact with. Plus it's more distinct visually.

You are factually correct, but Jim isn't saying there's no drops, he's saying he hasn't encountered them.

Everyone has different sensitivities to framerate, so it's understandable that Jim could have had drops to 25 and he wouldn't have noticed.

Jim prefaced this with his tweet and people are still arguing lol.

Who gives a fck about metacritics? The worst copy of the game (X1) has the highest rating (91) PS4(90) and PC (89)

Metacritics is just bullshit. Choose 2 or 3 reviewers and read their impressions after that just buy or dont buy the game.

no worries, we'll get better textures from modders in a few months :p

This is no excuse for Bethesda. Just because there are modders out there, that doesnt mean you can release your game looking like dog poo, hoping someone else fixes your shit.

Just posting itt as well, just because you dont really get a visual example from written reviews.

Sorry if its already been posted. Looks like Skyrim 2.0

Opinions, how do they work.

You just said it's overrated, so that means a lot of people like it.

The level of dislike and hoping for it to be a bomb is pretty rough. If you aren't into the game, move on to other threads and talk about things you do like. There is more to life than hating on things.

Shit, more like a glorified demo at that bro.

Get on the hype train or GTFO?

C'mon, man. His concern is legitimate. 3/5 Fallouts treat Charisma as one of the most important stats.

No, I'm not saying that at all. I'm saying if the feature (dialogue) was fine before, and it has changed in interface, yet reviews haven't commented on it, to me that it's a sign that it's perfectly fine. I would expect commentary if it were changed for the worse. Hence my saying "Unless you're being pessimistic...", in which case you're assuming the worst from the outset and miffed that no one has worked to assuage your fears.
