Fallout New Vegas |OT| Obsidian does what Bethesdon't

I love how different some quests can play out in this game. I just took care of Benny.

The first time, I played as a lady character,
I seduced him, had sex with him, then strangled him in his sleep.

This time, I
met him in his apartment to chat. I snuck in a silenced pistol, and popped his bodyguard in the back of the head when he was in his room in the back. I took his guard's smg and then me and Boone unceremoniously gunned him down mob-syle in his bedroom. We turned him into swiss cheese and casually walked out.

So good. I'm gonna take over New Vegas.

Going to finish this playthrough and start a new one for the Legion ^_^. Will get Energy Weapons exclusively for Flamer and Incinerator, and Explosives, as I never played with them before.

I bought Fallout NV yesterday and thanks to terrible Steam download speeds it will still take some while until I've finished the download. But that's fine, I'm in no hurry. Which means that I have also the time to ask a question that was probably answered a billion times already, so please excuse me.

Which mods should I install before I start playing?

I'm also interested in hearing this. Have about 3 gigs to go, won't be finished before I go to bed tonight unfortunately.

I'm already planning on:

MTUI (heard its broken with the latest DLC?)
WMX (but is WME better?)
Nevada Skies
Nevada Bounties I and II

I'm interested in hearing about bug fixing mods if there are any glaring/annoying bugs out there.

Don't think I can utilize texture replacer mods since I'm playing on my 2010 Macbook and I doubt it can handle it. Not sure if Nevada Skies will give me a big performance hit either.

Also, is there a way to get a house in this game like in Fallout 3?

To the folk asking about mods I'd say not to add any on your first play through. You wouldn't get an appreciation for what you're modding if you've only ever seen it that way. I'd go through once normally then add in mods for subsequent playthroughs. Unless you have no intention of replaying it, in which case I don't think there are any absolute must have mods.

Just got done taking out Caeser and his henchmen. Man that was tough.

I kinda cheated at the end and put the game on very easy as I was finding it impossible to clear the final room. I upped it for Caeser though. Felt good. I failed like 10 quests though lol.

Regarding Benny

My favorite death for benny is a good ol'legion crucifixion

Wait, wait...wait...

Are you telling me, that Fallout New Vegas is made by the same studio/team who made fallout 1 and 2?

Have I been living under a rock?

Well, I
punched him to death while he was tied up. Took ages though... Then I realised that Caesar and his guards became aggro so I left the building, forgetting that it overwrites my autosave. I had to resort to the movetoqt command to continue the game.
PC version FTW!

No, it's not really made by the same team who made Fallout 1 and 2, since Fallout 1 and 2 were made by mostly different teams. It is indeed by Obsidian, which is made up of many original members of Black Isle Studios, the original studio behind Fallout 1 and 2. There are several Fallout 2 staffers on New Vegas, but there are also staff who worked on the cancelled original Fallout 3. The director is Josh Sawyer, who was the lead designer on Fallout 3 before it was cancelled at BIS.

Not entirely the same team. Basically what duckroll said.

The legendary Chris Avellone is a good example of crossover between the games.

Yep. Obsidian was formed by a bunch of ex Black Isle devs, so they've got a lot of people working there who worked on Icewind Dale, Fallout 2, etc.

Edit: Though like others have said, the team for Fallout 1 was quite different to the team from Fallout 2.

Staff aside, what makes NV really special for long time Fallout fans is that the setting, characters, and overall story arcs are a lot more consistent to the previous Fallout world building, and there are many direct references to or appearances by factions and characters from previous Fallout games.

I went through the original Fallout 3 with no mods, would like to get a few to add world immersion this time (weapon mods and weather seem cool, and the bounties seem like something that would take place in the world anyway).

But yeah, I could easily play through the game with no mods and no questions asked. I usually do the same for Elder Scrolls though (got better textures and things like that for Oblivion, no gameplay mods).

D'oh - fired up new vegas after installing the 3 dlcs last night and now the sky texture is all messed up. Looks like I'll have to reinstall the lot. 7gb on a 2mb line is not fun!

Right click on the game on your Steam list, go to "Local Files" and click "Verify Integrity of Game Cache".

At least if you do that you can save yourself some trouble if there are only a few files messed up.

And if you have mods installed, disable them first.

I started this today and I think I've finished up in Goodsprings. Am I supposed to have any direction for the main quest or am I supposed to just roam around?

I headed to Primm but I get the feeling that I'm not supposed to be there yet.

Have you talked to Chet or Ruby yet? Either one will give you the 'He Went Thataway' quest update, which does in fact point you at Primm.

I'm really enjoying Hardcore mode. Playing on 'Hard/Very Hard', with it enabled, makes for a very different experience. My current build is melee/unarmed/survival, though I'm using guns as often as not when fights start getting out of hand.

I just noticed that the buried path to the 'The Divide' now says 'Lonesome Road'. Did it always?

If MTUI doesn't work use Darnified, I prefer Danified anyway.
There are multiple houses in New Vegas, you can get the first when you reach a town called novac about 3 hours into the game.

I played about 20 hours exploring and doing other quests before I decided it was time to do the They Went That-a-Way quest.

Oh I understand, interesting, thanks for the replies :)

It glads me to see people who didnt even like F3 are loving NV, and I loved F3. Really looking forward to starting this. Only a couple of days left I think :3

Anyone getting crashing issues in the game after playing for a while?

Yes. Just bought it yesterday since it was so cheap and I figured I'd rather play the PC version than the PS3 version I've got in my pile of shame and barely touched. So far the PS3 version puts the PC version to shame as far as stability goes. Crashes to desktop every ~20 minutes with the occasional hard freeze thrown in for giggles.

This is even less playable than Fallout 3 was. Really depressing because I love the setting and gameplay so much. Having to constantly quicksave every five minutes and then make another regular save every 10 minutes (because I seem to remember hearing about NV having problems corrupting saves) takes what should be a fun, enjoyable experience and makes it a monument to frustration.

The game won't even launch for me!

It is hung up in the preparing to launch screen and has been there for 15 minutes. I've tried canceling and starting the game up multiple times and still no luck.

been enjoying the game but the lack of proper PC controls is driving me crazy... weapon binding is wierd, the fact that "M" doesnt open the map, "I" doesnt open the inventory, etc directly is just stupid.

Thanks for the assistance JJB, finally got the game going.

Is it easy to screw yourself over during the initial stat picking process? Or do most builds just have different solutions to the same problems?

The only thing that you can 'screw' yourself is the very first mission, when convincing townspeople to help out requires a few skill-checks. Other than that, the enemies you face at the start aren't really going to overwhelm you and your meagre combat skills. For example, though my current build is focused on unarmed/melee, I still can get by using guns when I need to, even though my guns skill is like 18/100.

Good to hear. I'd hate to try to invest to heavily in relatively useless stats and be unable to advance later in the game.

What does it take for the White Glove Society to agree to work with me? I have high charisma and speech but the bastards barely even acknowledged me and I had to tell Yes Man that they wouldn't join us. They seem like pretty classy people so I'd like to work with them, but I guess I'll have to go ahead and murder them instead.

They're better off all murdered.

Talk to Heck Gunerson which should give you the quest "Beyond the Beef"

Weird, I even have that
perk. Maybe I did something wrong. I guess I'll just head back to the casino and eat them then.

^ ah cleared up in post above, thanks. It's probably too late now that I've advanced past that part of the Yes Man quest, but I'll try to start the quest anyways.

Oh right, I'm getting the quests confused. I checked the Wiki and apparently I was thinking of Beyond the Beef:

Players with the Cannibal perk or a high enough speech will have extra dialogue options that open up a quest to frame Heck Gunderson for his son's murder.

Well, it's mostly consistent with Fallout 2. There was a decent sized shift from Fallout to Fallout 2 in terms of the world building. Since some of that stuff in the transition was straight up retcon it makes sense that they follow the second game more closely.

Awesome, I can't wait to do that quest after work. It sounds so twisted.

I'm playing this game much differently than I did the first time, and it's remarkable how different things have played out. The first time I worked with the Kings on several quests to gain access to the Strip, this time I managed to buy a pass right away so I went to the King's HQ and killed everyone. Now I have an awesome white suit and many of the NPC's at Freeside and the Strip make remarks about the Kings being wiped out. I love that it's possible to slaughter an entire faction, and I love that the game actually acknowledges it. If this was something like Oblivion, the NPC's would probably still be chatting about them as if they still existed.

Anyways, this game owns and I still have a ton of stuff to do.

That quest is one of the most open-ended in how you progress through it.

It was one of my favorites especially in my evil run.

I would agree if you were talking about the tone. But in terms of the actual setting, there is a clear progression from F1 -> F2 -> NV. Each game builds on what happened to the various locations, people, and factions of the West Coast areas, and how they have expanded their influences eastwards.

I actually didn't do Beyond the Beef "properly" until at least my third play through. The first two times I
sneaked in through the kitchen using a Stealth-boy, rescued the kid and then slaughtered the entire White Glove society mercilessly as we escaped.

jim-jam bongs said:
How are you planning on getting past the gate without them attacking you? I always clear The Fort on my Han/Luke runs, and I always get rushed as soon as I open the main gate, and then again once I enter Caesar's tent. That's even with stealth-boys.
Me and Boone went in in Sneak mode and quickly gunned down the guards at the door. After that, we just picked everyone off until we reached Caesar's tent. I just whipped out my Assault Carbine and went at it.

Planning to do a few replays of the assault during my current playthrough. I remember killing everyone in the tent with a Holy Frag Grenade once, but unfortunately that killed Benny, too. :lol I quite enjoyed conversing with him, and then leaving him to die in that tent, alone amongst a litter of corpses.

It's not just the tone. The whole tribal angle for example was not a part of Fallout, it was something that didn't exist until Fallout 2. There's definitely progression there but it wasn't totally consistent between the first two games. Fallout 2 is the one that set the direction for how the world of Fallout was going to grow, and to do that there was a little retcon work involved.

The drawback is that you have to do a lot of sidequest for EXP purposes. I mean, who doesn't love his character being all powerful? So even if I have the urge to murder any NCR soldier I see I will most likely do all quests for them, and then switch to Ceasar.

I would have liked if the split the game into 2x30h campaigns, even if they would mirror each other. Camp Hope/Nelson is a great example of something like that, however you don't have it with every quest. Does Legion offer as many quests as NCR (including sidequests)?

Also, can we re-visit DLC areas, or once the DLC is done the area is closed again?
