Fallout New Vegas |OT| Obsidian does what Bethesdon't

I'm interested in taking down all of the factions and electing myself king of NV. Is this possible? If it is do I have to take out all the casino bosses as well?

You can put yourself in charge of New Vegas. As for casino heads: there is one that you must kill or disable (yes, he's technically in charge of a casino), and there is one that you don't necessarily have to kill, but you have to deal with in order to retrieve a plot-important item. It's your choice for the other casinos.

That'll work just fine. Thanks for the help.

Holy moley. Old World Blues continues to amaze me.

Question for anyone who has done the DLC out of order:
does finding Elijah's journal and stuff, or Christina's rifle, have any impact on dialogue choices available in Dead Money?

I've started a new character since my old one is an unstoppable god, and the level ranges lend themselves to going Main Game to Freeside => Honest Hearts => Old World Blues => Dead Money. So if nobody knows, I'll find out once I finish OWB and head to the Sierra Madre.

Hmmm well this is not good. I decided to install NV today and start playing tomorrow. I booted up the game to see if everything worked and it did, now a couple of hours later I just tried again and the game crashes everytime before the launcher starts.

Can't start the game in any way.

help :(

Try both of these, the latter is for in-game crashing but almost everyone needs to do it to increase stability: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=29936761&postcount=14083

I tried a few of the solutions in the Steam thread that jimmy linked to, I'm still having problems with it but it will usually launch after clicking "verify game cache files" in the properties menu. For some reason, there is always one file that needs to be restored.

Probably a dumb question, but have the recent patches brought the PS3 version on par with the 360?

Last year, the jaggies (zero anti-aliasing) and game-crashing bugs frustrated me to the point of taking an extended hiatus. Heck, I might just wait until my Skyrim monster rig arrives in October.

Maybe you should wait, by then there might be a PC edition out with all of the DLC bundled.

Under normal circumstances, it would be a no-brainer. Unfortunately, I'm suffering through the summer blues with nothing interesting to play.

Also, the more I think about it, I doubt I'll be interested in revisiting the Fallout universe within a few short weeks of Skyrim arriving. Maybe I just answered my own question. lol

Random freezes like those are borderline impossible to debug and i doubt they'll ever fix them. New Vegas' enjoyment is directly proportional to your CTD-tolerance.

Whoa whoa whoa.. lets not defend Obsidian blindly here. Almost every other open-world rpg out there is rock solid in terms of bugs and performance. Obsidian couldnt even do such a trivial thing.

Help a brother out here, guys. I want to jump into one of the DLCs, but I'm not sure which one I'll enjoy the most. My main character is pretty grounded, so to speak. Meaning I use very basic weapons (rifles, shotguns, etc), basic armor (leather, light armor, etc) and nothing flashy (energy weapons, explosives, power armor. etc). What DLC has the best bonus weapons and gear that would benefit my character?

Also can companions join you in DLCs? I recently befriended Cass and I'd hate to leave her behind for 10+ hours.

Based on what you have described, and you general desire for better gear, I would probably recommend Honest Hearts out of the 3 released so far. It has a nice environmental type which is nothing like anything found in the Mojave, so it can be pretty fun to play through and explore, and the biggest addition it brings with it, is .45 Auto ammo types and related weapons, which would fit your basic gun character's usage, and bring more variety to the main game after you have completed the DLC.

Nope. No companions.

Just formated my main drive, forgetting that fallout saves to your documents. This is depressing :\

I was level 28 and halfway through OWB...

Oh well, time to try a new character I guess.

I'm not sure about that man. Fallout 3 might have had this problem, but it never happened when I played through it. I may not be an expert on how to develop a game, but there probably is a way to fix the problem. Doesn't seem like the developers really care as much about the bugs though.

Thanks a bunch. Yeah I was looking at Honest Hearts the most out of the three, specifically cause it involves the Burned Man.

Yeah, I love Obsidian but after the reproducible lock up I encountered in Old World Blues at the weekend I have to admit the bugs get a bit much sometimes.

Ditto. I ran into so few bugs in Fallout 3 that I can't even think of any, but with Fallout: New Vegas I ran into major bug problems when one of my saved games corrupted. To give Obsidian its due, though, the writing of Fallout: New Vegas was much better.

So I had the strangest bug occur yesterday in the 360 version of FO:NV.

This is my second character and I was a good twenty hours in, doing the Brotherhood Mission for Veronica. All of the sudden my game just kept locking up. I would restart, and bam it would lock up without any warning.

So I tried everything. I uninstalled it, I reinstalled it, I cleared my cache, tried to play with and without the DLC, I mean everything you could imagine and the game kept crashing. So I loaded up an earlier save and everything was fine. I got to the exact same point in the game and I noticed it kept crashing again.

Finally I linked the crashes to switching my weapons. Every time I switched it would crash. Easy to reproduce. If I didn't have any weapons out no problem and I could keep playing. So I thought about my weapon loadout and realized that before both crashing episodes began, I hot keyed my Dynamite to my Down/Left key.

BAM. that's what the problem was. I unbinded the dynamite from that key, and no problems whatsoever since. I was able to reproduce this problem since then to make sure I wasn't crazy and I got the crashes to occur again.

What a strange bug. I used the down left key for dynamite before with no issues. I think it was the overall weapon hotkey combination that made SOMETHING wonky.

Still love the game though.

That's awesome. Mine was a bit less funny than that. In Old World Blues:

- Get the sample of Gabe's bark
- Kill the robo-scorpions and leave the test ground
- Kill the robo-scorpions just outside the door
- Try to start the advanced school test

CRASH

The only way I resolved it was to clear out all the robo-scorpions, exit the facility, kill the robo-scorpions outside, then go back in and start the test.

One thing in OWB which I'm not sure about is all of the scripted spawning events. Robo-scorpions and lobotomites suddenly fading in right on top of me kind of kills the mood.

Don't get me wrong, i'm not defending Obs, just saying he shouldn't get his hopes up. New Vegas is a great game and i love it to death, but it has tons of problems, a big one being its constant crashing, freezing and whatnot, but no matter how much support Obsidian's doing, these problems are probably very fundamental and it's likely they won't ever fix them.

By the way, i'm going through Dead Money for the first time and so far i'm loving it (it's tough as hell in very hard, hardcore mode and with Project Nevada). I had my doubts, but now i'm very excited for the rest of the DLC.

I have opposite experience - New Vegas had maybe 3 crashes in my 80 hours of gaming, but with F3 I'm getting a crash every 2-3 hours.

THIS. Well I've only seen the robo-scorpions do that so far, and I attributed that to the fact that
the mad scientist guy said the robo-scorpions just construct themselves out of junk parts lying around

Are there any fixes/mods for:
- VATS delay in-between clicking the V key and making a selection.
- Changing the position of arms/weapons in first person view, I use a higher FOV and there are some clipping problems.
- Janky movement and slow jumping, I know this is somewhat of the engine's staple though.

Haha I keep getting nailed by the
legendary bloatfly
in Old World Blues. Hilariously powerful all things considered.

Oh wow, I missed that. The only time I noticed it becoming a big problem was
up north in the winding pass. It seemed like an alarm state there were so many scorpions swarming me, so I assumed I'd just hit a trigger or something. If it's random that's pretty funny :D

Weird. Must be the mods; I've bought the game a few weeks ago, and never had a problem playing the vanilla version on my middle-tier computer. Electro-City was a mess, though; not sure why.

Turned off all mods, still crashes when I open the door. *sigh*....

Time to reinstall

Haha, yeah. That asshole.

Though McNamara took it off after I scared off the NCR Ranger with some BS about Powder Gangers.

This is great. I seriously didn't know the Brotherhood was in this game.

I love the not-so-subtle jabs some NPCs take at Fallout 3's
version of the BoS
.

I'm at the very end of my first play through.
Just finished blowing up the generators in the damn and I have to fight the Latalus or whoever is leading the legion since I killed Caesar. I'm level 19, 75 guns and sniper build and I'm having a hell of a time beating the last battle.
Is there anything special I should be doing?

Jabs? Where? Veronica references them once when talking about their history, and I haven't encountered any other significant references to them, much less jabs.

In fact, the Eastern Brotherhood is now way more powerful than the Western one. It's everything Veronica wanted the Western Brotherhood to be.

I've been marathoning NV after buying HH and OWB and love it, despite the side-effects of insomnia. With all the DLC plus A World of Pain, there's more content than Oblivion. I've never had this much stuff to do with my over level 30 characters. It's so much fun. OWB is particularly inventive. I can't imagine how many pulp science references there must be.

-No idea. I hate VATS so i never use it.
-There's this, which i use and like a lot. It works with rifles of all kinds, shotguns and pistols but not things like Miniguns, Rocket Launchers or melee weapons. This is an installer for said mod that i haven't tried, but i think it lets you pick which animation from the pack you want, so it sounds pretty cool.
-No idea, but prolly doesn't exist.

Now that I think about it, it's probably only Veronica. She clearly mocks them, I think... but it's been a long time since I last spoke to her.

Just started Dead Money... really loving the creepy Bioshock feel so far.

I can't recall any digs at F3's Brotherhood in FNV. If I remember that group correctly, they'd stopped operating under their 'normal' policies due to the extreme plight of the Capitol Wasteland. I thought, story-wise, Bethesda did a decent job explaining why Lyons broke with tradition.

I do recall reading that the Outcast faction from F3 is a dig against NMA.

I just did a replay of HH with my survivalist build, and it was much more enjoyable. I kept Follows-Chalk with me the whole time, though it got a bit annoying when he'd run off screen to fight 3 green geckos and get killed. I really hope all that flora regrows.

I hope Obsidian does Fallout 4 with the Skyrim engine. Huge fan of this story as opposed to the one from Fallout 3.

I really want to know how the main arc ends, but I don't want to complete it so fast. There's so much more to explore...

So I finished Honest Hearts. I ran through it in about an hour. Oddly, I killed everyone, despite my good natured character, every enemy was hostile. After the initial
ambush
, every NPC was hostile, so I had to defend myself and kill everyone. Even
Burned Man
instantly started firing at me after I had to shoot down the two guards in Angel Cave. The one and only non-hostile NPC was a dog just trotting down the road. At least the loot was good! I think I'll retry it at some point, in a effort to actually do some of the quests.

At the start of HH there's a guy shooting at you from across a bridge. An ally sneaks up behind him and kills him. You probably shot him.

You must have killed Follows-Chalk! He 'rescues' you right after you cross the first bridge.

Same thing happened to me. You shot a friendly character near the beginning. After killing him you'll start the fast tracked evil quest.

I'd recommend doing it again. You missed out on SOOOOOO much items and events.

Just finished Dead Money for the first time. What a ride. Loved how challenging it was, the story, the characters, what an amazing work by Obs.

DM got me really pumped for OWB and LR. I liked the tribals in FO2, so i think i'm gonna enjoy HH as well.

Totally agreed with that first point, though I highly doubt it'll happen. And at the end of the day, I did enjoy FO 3's story well enough (except for the dumb ending before the DLC fixed it). I'm just excited for whatever the future holds for Fallout. New Vegas has completely reinvigorated my love for the franchise.

As for your second point, I'm in the same spot. Finished all the DLC and am now starting to bump against the ending of the main narrative. I'm really interested in seeing it play out, but I'm also holding off since I still have a ton of stuff to see and do.

I really wanted to dislike Dead Money because I hate DLC where they take all my stuff but the writing completely won me over. You could say the hard part wasn't playing; it was letting go.
