A few details on tri-Ace's new projects have appeared via Famitsu and the usual early leak sources.
Yes, that's projects with a plural! The Star Ocean developer is working not just on Frontier Gate for PSP, but on a 3DS game called Beyond the Labyrinth as well.
Frontier Gate is said to have a Monster Hunter style, but with turn-based battles. Three players will be able to team up for multiplayer play, forming parties consisting of six characters.
Beyond the Labyrinth is a 3D dungeon RPG featuring a young girl as a main character.
Frontier Gate is confirmed for 2011. Release details for Beyond the Labyrinth have yet to surface. Both games are being published by Konami.

Aeana said:Atlus USA is definitely not going to bring anything Growlanser-related over. Would be nice if they let someone else take a stab at it, but I don't think that would happen either.
Shouta said:I don't know how likely it is for someone to wrestle Growlanser away and be able to release it in the states at all. That's the slightly sucky part. =/
B.K. said:Money talks. Maybe if everyone donates $10, Aksys could get enough money to license it!

Sega went quiet on Binary Domain following the game's announcement back in December. The silence is at long last coming to an end. This week's Famitsu has a twenty page look at the game.
Binary Domain is an original action adventure title from Toshihiro Nagoshi and the team that brought us Yakuza. Different from Yakuza, the game targets international audiences. Be sure and read all our past coverage, including screenshots, videos and commentary from Nagoshi, here.
Famitsu's coverage this week at long last provides us with names for two primary characters. The main character, the one who looks like a space marine, is named Dan Marshall and voiced by Koichi Yamadera. Also introduced is Roy Boden. He's the one who... also looks like a space marine. Nicknamed "Big Boy," Roy is voiced by Masami Iwasaki.
In an interview, Nagoshi jokes that the game may have the most dialogue in gaming history.
There's presumably a lot more across the twenty pages than just this, so check back later in the day for more details.
Aeana said:Suguro as director for Beyond the Labyrinth is pretty interesting. Definitely keeping an eye on that.

Atlus and Shigeo Komori are working on a new DS game, Famitsu reveals today. The game's name is Nora to Koku no Koubou: Kiri no Mori no Majo. Translated to English, this may be something along the lines of "Nora and the Engraving Studio: The Witch of the Forest of Mist."
Aside from the name and Komori's involvement, no details have surfaced at present.
Komori served as director on Etrian Odyssey II and III. Prior to that, he worked on the scenario for the original Etrian Odyssey, Devil Summoner, and Princess Crown.
A PSP version of Growlancer IV makes its debut this week. Growlancer IV Overload is said to have additional characters, stories and events.

Very briefly.
jj984jj said:I'd be excited for Growlanser if there was even 0.1% chance of it being localized. Interesting that Komori is working on a new DS game, but I don't even know how many more DS games Atlus are going to make. I really want to know more about the Takayuki Suguro game though!
Gunloc said:This issue of Famitsu is extremely relevant to my interests.
Need more Growlanser, Ao no Kiseki, Xillia & Meruru info.
I doubt Komori is going to make a game like SJ.Bel Marduk said:Fixed. I'm sure they'll localize all of them just like they did for their PS2 games. I wouldn't be surprised if Devil Survivor 2 came out this year in NA (why haven't they given this game a trailer yet?)
But I wonder how many more they'll make. The only other game I can see them making for the DS is another first person SMT title like SJ.

*high five*Akselziys said:Your interests mirror my own :3 I think we can be good friends haha ;D
Oh, well then I doubt that as well. The fact that Komori is making a new DS game is already surprising to me. With 3DS out now publishers are slowing down on the DS though, and since the software market is not as strong as it was on PS2 that's why I'm starting to doubt whether or not Atlus will continue to localize DS games as well.Bel Marduk said:I meant besides this new game. Atlus can maybe make a new first person SMT. Not from Komori.
As reported here earlier today, Star Ocean developer tri-Ace is teaming up with Konami for multiple projects. One of those is for the PSP and is titled Frontier Gate.
Revealed in this week's Famitsu (via Sokuho @ Hokanko), Frontier Gate is an original multiplayer RPG. Three players can play together over ad-hoc, with each player controlling their main character and a partner character, making for a party of six.
The story surrounds a "Frontier" which was discovered by two frontiersmen. Worried that the various countries of the world would fight over control of this area, the two frontiersmen formed a guild to explore its depths. The characters you control are newcomer members of that guild.
Depending on the partner character you select, you'll get a different story. Famitsu introduces three partner characters:
Alettio: A young man with slick black hair who joined the guild around the same time as the main character. He wields a dual sword.
Reinvout: An instructor to newcomer guild members. He uses a single handed sword. He's said to be the hero for the next generation.
Dizzy: A second generation female adventurer. She makes use of a mace.
Details are scarce on the game's combat system. Although you may be getting a Monster Hunter feeling from the premise, combat is actually turn-based, with an RPG-like command battle system.
By performing combos, you can build up a "Boost AP" meter. This can be used to perform a variety of skills.
Further details on the battle system will come in a future update.
Famitsu has an interview with tri-Ace CEO Yoshiharu Gotanda and Konami producer Shingo Mukaitouge. The two revealed that the game was made with multiplayer in mind. The turn-based battle mechanics and the AP system came after the decision to make a multiplayer game. They're working to make it so that the game will have good tempo.
Single player is included as well. Both multiplayer and single player take place in the same world. Gotanda noted that if you raise your partner character into a healer, you may have difficulty in single player.
As one might expect, the game will offer plenty of customization options. Your can customize your main character fully, down to the face. The partner characters can be customized with weapons and clothing and in other areas.
The game includes 15 partner characters. By playing with each of the partners, you'll see the full story.
Development on Frontier Gate is currently at 80%. A release is planned for some time this year.
The second of two tri-Ace projects revealed in this week's Famitsu is a 3DS game called Beyond the Labyrinth. While this doesn't appear to be as far along as Frontier Gate, which we detailed here, Sokuho @ Hokanko has provided a few additional details from the magazine's preview and interview.
Beyond the Labyrinth is being directed by tri-Ace's Takayuki Suguro, director of Resonance of Fate and Valkyrie Profile 2, and produced by Konami's Shingo Mukaitouge, who's also producing Frontier Gate.
Interviewed in the magazine, the Mukaitouge and tri-Ace CEO Yoshiharu Gotanda revealed the game to be a 3D dungeon RPG. Aside from this, they were being vague in their commentary. They showed artwork of a young girl and said that the story will center on her, but wouldn't confirm her to be the main character. Of course, they did not share her name.
The girl will talk a lot, the two said. This is one area of focus for the development team.
The main gameplay involves 3D dungeon exploration. However, Gotanda said that the visuals and world view are being made bright.
A few screenshots in the magazine show the girl standing in ruins and similar locations. She apparently wears her blonde hair in a ball.
Beyond the Labyrinth is being developed to be a major draw for the 3DS, Mukaitouge said in closing. Currently 60% complete, the game is flagged date TBA in the magazine.
Gunloc said:Well, at least Konami is making RPGs again.
SUIKODEN PLEASE
That just leaves the core Suikoden V team available to make the glorious return of the series!Nirolak said:Notably all of Konami's new RPGs are:
-New IPs
-Developed by outside studios
So Suikoden probably isn't the safest bet.
