Fantastic Beasts 2 starts filming; official details (Dumbledore, plot, setting etc.)

So not worth it
I knew they were going to retcon the Dumbledore/Grindlewald stuff.

It's a love story of the ages.

On 19 October 2007, Rowling was asked by a young fan whether Dumbledore finds "true love." Rowling said that she always thought of Dumbledore as being homosexual and that he had fallen in love with Gellert Grindelwald, which was Dumbledore's "great tragedy"; Rowling did not explicitly state whether Grindelwald returned his affections.[14][15][16] Rowling explains this further by elaborating on the motivations behind Dumbledore's flirtation with the idea of wizard domination of Muggles: "He lost his moral compass completely when he fell in love and I think subsequently became very mistrustful of his own judgement in those matters so became quite asexual. He led a celibate and a bookish life."[17]

There is an interesting story there, but no way Hollywood is going to go there for a big blockbuster action flick.

Why not? The religious folk already hate it because it's literally witches and magic.

JK is also the biggest author in the world. If not here then who?

Slightly disappointed that Credence survived. Their inability to save him gave the finale some emotional gravitas that I appreciated in an otherwise fairly whimsical movie.

edit: just to be clear, I loved the whimsical stuff.

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
Lestrange? There was a relative to Bellatrix in the first movie?

Very very briefly. There is a scene between Queenie and Newt when they're all inside his suitcase. Queenie sees the picture of Leta Lestrange (Zoe Kravitz) and has a brief conversation about how she must be important to Newt. Newt doesn't want to talk about it, so the viewer is supposed to take away that they're estranged.

Bellatrix married into the Lestrange family later on down the timeline. But they're definitely going to explore the Leta & Newt connection.

Really happy the Goldstein sisters are coming back. Was under the impression Newt was scooting off to Europe and leaving them behind. Super excited for this film.

Let's hope the second is better than the first. Was a huge fan of HP growing up and was a total nerd about it. However, this film was quite awful/boring. Maybe it's because JK can't write without the school setting or maybe she just can't write the universe well anymore.

Is Dumbledore gay in this?
He was gay in all the other movies...so yes.

Spoiler for future events:
Newt eventually marries Tina according to the book this is based on, so she was pretty much guaranteed to return. I'm pleasantly surprised to see Queenie return though, she's a great character.

To be fair, he wasn't known to be gay until the 6th film was being made, so he's only retroactively gay in the first 5 films. It's like saying that Atticus Finch is racist in To Kill A Mockingbird because of him being made to be so in Go Set A Watchman. You didn't know he was at the time.

Still, it doesn't change the fact that he's gay.

I am SO excited for this.

The first movie was one of the best blockbuster experiences I had in years. Seriously. It was so...heartfelt. I came into the movie fully expecting to HATE the human characters I perceived to be pure comic relief, but they ended up being some of my favorite parts of the film. News was such a refreshing, new kind of main character. Quiet and shy, yet so determined and strong. I strongly recommend this video talking about that specifically: The Fantastic Masculinity of Newt Scamander

The movie was even pretty fucking scary at times and the special effects were great at the end. I absolutely loved it and felt a sense of wonder I didn't expect in the slightest. Those characters were so.fucking.good and so far detached from all the usual, terrible stereotypes every single blockbuster seems to rely on. JK Rowling did some amazing work.

As a huge Harry Potter fan I didn't really look forward to the first movie at all but now I'll see the second one as soon as I'm able to.

Also, holy shit, Ezra Miller is back? That was (along with Johnny Depp) one of the only parts I disliked of the first movie - his very sudden and unfulfilling end that seemed incredibly cruel and undeserved. So happy to see that he's back along with all the human characters.

His defeat ocurred in 1945, but he was active for most of the first half of the 20th Century.

What's more weird about this is we know Dumbledore actively avoided any confrontation with Grindelwald until Grindelwald's expansion in Europe made it impossible for Dumbledore to ignore. So why would he be gallivanting after Grindelwald with Scamander 18 years before that happened?

Retcons already happening.

The first one felt a bit like two movies to me. I thought the first movie (the first half) was kinda boring, but the second movie was extremely good.

I'm in for the sequel

Pretty much. There's a good 70 minute movie in there, it's just that they had to make it 2 hours and change because all movies have to be over two hours now.

Can't wait, I loved the first one.

Hoping Newt still plays a large role though, not sure if I'm interested in him becoming a side character.

Really? I thought the first half was the more interesting part. Loved the idea of a wizard exploring a magical community that doesn't quite work the way his does.

It's a shame about these movies. They should just be a fun romp in the HP world, but I couldn't even finish the first one.

Since the disaster that was Cursed Child I've stopped caring about whether the new stuff retcons the books, I like to think of them as 2 separate entities.

Still I liked the first Fantastic Beasts

He's only known for writing a book about magical creatures, so he shouldn't be involved with any big events. I mean, if he was partly responsible for bringing one of the most notorious magical criminals of that era to justice then he'd be famous for doing so, right? So I'm guessing the sequels will be Jude Law's epic rivalry and battles with Grindlewald and occasional cuts to Newt writing his books and keeping well out of things.

As someone who loves the HP books the first movie was definetly a disappointment. I’ll most likely skip this one until it’s on TV. I never liked the actual HP movies so it makes sense I would like this either I guess. It didn’t capture what I liked about that universe at all.

Those “Harry Potter nods” don’t sound good to me at all.

I'm guessing Newt will Hobbit it up in that he's a key player in the endgame events but nobody really knows him

I really wonder how they're going to bring Jacob back into the mix.

Jacob: THESE PASTRIES GAVE ME BACK MY MEMORY

Jacob: MAKE IT RAIN

Depp's the only worry for me. Really enjoyed the first so I'm looking forward to this. Redmayne was excellent as Newt and I liked the supporting cast a lot too.

Looking forward to this. Loved the Original and I'm always up for more Harry Potter. Loved Cursed Child too, only wish it was a full book written by JK herself though.

Excited about Jude Law playing Dumbledore. Now just bring back Colin Farrell and give them both loads of screentime and you might have a great movie.

I was surprised to learn that I actually love the movie. I got it on Blu-ray couple months ago (not the movie I asked for) and watched the hell out of it after the first time. Surprisingly fantastic film.

I'm excited for the sequel.

Dumbledore isn't supposed to go after him until they have their big duel in the 40s.

Wonder if they'll even attempt to explain the Elder Wand stuff. That Grindlewald should have it already, and that Newt or some random MCUSA Auror should be it's new master, having disarmed him int he last film.
Yep. This is exactly what I was afraid was going to happen.

I wanted Fantastic Beast movies. After seeing this, it looks like we're just going to get Dumbledore prequels. Trying to not be a pissy fanboy. But kind of not happy.

Here for Jude Law this time.

And Kowlaski and Queenie.

Liked the first, but didn't exactly make much of a splash in my mind when I think back to it.

Fantastic Beasts 1 was actually my favorite of all the harry potter movies, probably because it didn't have the nostalgic baggage of having read and loved all those books, I enjoyed the acting, the story. Its almost like not having a bunch of kid actors makes for a better movie maybe?

Will definitely see this one for more expanded universe info

How are they bringing Kowlaski back? Didn't they wipe his memory?
I loved Scamanders adorable little pet those hoarded the gold heh

My primary concern is the insistence on every character returning. This is usually a recipe for disaster as the narrative ends up carrying weight it can't support. This was a notable problem in the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels.

No first sequel, for example, needs Jacob Kowalski. This is bittersweet, because he's a great and likable character. But it is moreso bittersweet that he is being written into an immediate sequel, rendering the ending of the first film meaningless. His return will not be earned and will retroactively render the first film's conclusion pointless.

Why
erase his memory
if only to bring him back at the first available opportunity? It's bad writing and bad drama. :(

But this was always going to be a problem with a Fantastic Beast series, because its saving grace is its characters. Now you have to transplant an entire cast into a continued story they don't belong in.

No he doesn't... did you see his fat ass in that movie?

I hated seeing Depp there.. took me right out of it.

I found Colin Farrel to be a much more menacing presence, especially at the end when he's all "Alright... that's how you want to play this?" and just started wrecking shit. Deep could never pull that off.

I agree. Depp as Grindelwald is an enormous casting mistake that seemed intent on cashing in on cameo rather than impactful performance.

It also undermines Farrel's performance by saying "just kidding" at the last second.

Wonder what they're gonna call it, as "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" isn't the best name to build a franchise around. Also interested to see how they push the main character of the last movie into the back as Dumbledore steps up, given that the core of the story is "Dumbledore v. Grindlewald"

The first one was enjoyable, but I'll admit it wasn't super-memorable either. Hope this one is a bit better.

Is there a reason that they've not specifically mentioned Johnny Depp? They've spoken about all the new actors joining the cast, and I know he's not exactly new but that'd be worth mentioning, surely?

Is it too much to hope they've dropped him?

No, but they clearly hired him because they assumed his name would help sell tickets, also WB was willing to forgive him and help his career, because like any studio, they have no shame.

Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find It 2, lol. They're sticking with that name at least, I'd assume.
