Rowling has all the power here. Not gonna happen.

That and they'd be fools to cut it, because the slow burn of Dumbledore realising he has to stop Grindle has the potential to be some excellent drama.

And that doesn't work without the love angle

ughh, low key feels like some gaffers get off on being contrarians

I'm certainly not "getting off" on being a contrarian. It's simply my personal opinion. I don't even think it's an opinion that's entirely unpopular among many people who were fans of the original books, or indeed, fans of the films.

I loved Richard Harris and I felt he did a wonderful job in the role as Dumbledore in the first two movies. But even as someone who was given the unenviable task of having to follow Harris' performance in the role, I felt Michael Gambon did a really, really poor job with the part. I'm sure a lot of that could be chalked up to Gambon's Dumbledore being written in a noticeably colder, more clipped fashion in comparison to the Harris incarnation, in conjunction with some bad direction (which is personally why I'm reluctant to criticize Gambon outright for line readings like this) but even outside of that particular context surrounding the role....I personally felt Gambon delivered a series of rather dull and unconvincing performances whilst part of the series, completely exercising a lot of the wit and warmth I've long associated with the Dumbledore character.

I hope by expanding upon my original post, you've come to understand my perspective a little better, even if you might not necessarily agree with it.

I really enjoyed Fantastic Beasts, way more so than any Yates-directed HP film. I honestly thought it was well regarded? I guess I was LTTP so I might have missed the negative reactions.

^ Fully agreed on Gambon's Dumbledore by the way. I do chalk it up to the writing and direction but I absolutely loved Harris' Dumbledore and the stark contract with Gambon's never sat right with me. Wit and warmth is a good way to put it, that's always been book Dumbledore to me and Harris captured this too.

I can see it. I like Jude Law.

He was on-screen for fifteen seconds!

You're not wrong, but Depp's still capable of dramatic performances.
They gave him platinum blonde hair, a Hitler stache and different coloured eyes.

That is not Grindelwald at all.

"Never said I wasn't a hypocrite."
I really wish they would reveal Farrell to be Grindelwald after all on some Scooby Doo shit.

At the very least they should
bring him back as the real Graves.
He was a great addition to the cast and
tossing him aside for a lame reveal
was dumb.

I'm guessing this movie will focus on
Grindelwald obtaining the Elder Wand and will end with a big duel between him and
Dumbledore.

Edit: put it in spoiler tags just in case

No, that will be movie 5. We're only on movie 2.

And I'm pretty sure he had the wand before the first movie.

Yeah disliking Gambon isn't really out of the norm--the fanbase is pretty split on the question. It's just incorrect. :p

I have a feeling they're going to retcon the he'll out of the backstory and have Dumbledore and Grindlewald meet again before their duel.

He should have the Elder Wand already. He stole it as a young man. Easy explanation was he used Graves' wand to keep up The disguise and had the Elder Wand stashed.

Though one issue that will no doubt be glossed over is that he was disarmed in Fantastic Beasts, and should no longer be the wand's mastet.

The duel takes place 20 years after Fantastic Beasts 1, so barring a retcon, they shouldn't cross paths again.

I assumed
he was murdered but they completely ignored what happened to real Graves so they might as well bring him back. That might mirror Moody too much though?

If I'm remembering correctly in order to do the spell that transforms you into another person the samples have to come from a person that is alive. At the very least the real Graves has to be alive at the end of the first Fantastic Beast movie. Things happen far to quickly at the end and Grindelwald wasn't expecting or counting on being found out in the end. Now no one knows where the real Graves is so that makes his survival questionable. It might mirror Moody but rather have that and Graves be back. I liked seeing Farrell with a wand.
I'm looking to see how Depp is once we see him able to do more. There wasn't enough to judge him I think in the first movie. What I saw didn't bother me. Seemed fitting for some of the other stranger magic users we've seen in this world. Now I don't know how Grindelwald is suppose to act or look. I don't remember but I'm going with whatever is on screen since Rowling is the one writing the story. Her creation and world, etc.

Judd Law is a fine pick as well.

Is that even stated in the movies?

I haven't really watched them all because they're shit but this seems like a plot point only a book reader would notice.

Partially kidding. I think the movies are trash but I totally get why other people like them.

Now that I think about I did actually enjoyed his take on the character in Azkaban, It's the Goblet stuff that really soured me on him. If that makes it any more correct to you. :p

No strong feelings either way, but have they recast Depp yet?

They can just say it was a botched Revelio charm that made him look that way, or something.

It wasn't a spell before, it was a (polyjuice) potion. Grindelwald did use a spell in Fantastic Beasts because he's all powerful and all that, but it might be one with different requirements for all we know.

But yes, I do want Farrell back for the same reasons! They kept it vague enough that they could easily bring him back.

And yeah Depp didn't bother me either. I don't know how he'll be handling things in the sequels but he seemed fairly serious in the first movie. I honestly think he'll be absolutely fine.

I like depp in some stuff this century but man it was such a big bummer to see Colin Farrell transform into him

Colin was killing it and then depp looks like a freaking idiot with that blonde hair and mutters a few incoherent lines smh

Why are people complaining about Depp now? We knew who he'd be and that he would at the least be in the second movie from the point he was signed on, and he even appeared in the first movie (very briefly). Did anyone actually expect him to sign up for a 15 second stint to never appear again? I agree Farrell was actually very good in the first movie and I'd like to see him again too but Depp is a very capable actor too when he's not in dreadful roles (which nowadays he unfortunately is a lot).

David Yates' Harry Potter movies all assume you read the books. They don't even bother to go over important plot details assuming you know them already.

And in fairness, the Potter books were bigger than the even the Potter movies.

So yeah, the fact that Dumbledore willfully avoided any confrontation between himself and Grindelwald for their entire adults years, until Dumbledore finally dueled and defeated him in 1945, is an important detail they shouldn't gloss over.

Ah that's right it was a potion before.
Thanks.

They should bring back Colin anyways. Grindelwald didn't kill the dude he was impersonating right? He had to live for him to keep making that potion

Because Farell was awesome and Depp over the last couple of years had a couple of misses.

The stunt casting of Jared Harris would have been awesome tbh. He would have suit the part. But I guess they want somebody more good looking and push the relationship

Sounds good, Law is great.

I had an amusing moment where I told my friend this news and we both began typing and I realized we were both Googling who Jude Law is at the same time hehehehe

I hope he does a good job in Fantastic Beasts!

How young are you? I mean, it's just surprising to me that you would have no idea who he is. He hasn't been in many big things in the last few years (decade?) I guess, but he was pretty major a while back.

"Did you put your name in the Goblet of Fire, Harry?", he asked calmly.

Yeah, this is the go-to for people who don't like Gambon. Which is weird because it's totally unrepresentative of his Dumbledore in general, and seems pretty clearly on the director, who said in interviews he assumed the kids at boarding schools should be terrified of the headmaster and directed accordingly. Goblet of Fire is weird in a lot of ways compared to the other movies.

He was great in all the other movies, particularly in the third movie where he absolutely nailed it.
