Fart in The Wind, Kuchera's Defining Opinion Piece Revisited

This. I only heard him and Marcus Beer stand up and be counted; too many individuals in the games media seem too willing to be shafted over.

the gaming press wasnt so comprensive when the ps3 launched..(with good reasons) but at the same time, anyone remembers the american game press reaction to the 360 red lights problem? because was similar to this whole xboxone drm fiasco..

Even the title is poorly conceived.

'Used games, Twitter complaints, and Sony: Why the Xbox One “backlash” doesn't matter'

Why is backlash in quotes? Is he suggesting that it wasn't a real backlash?

He's certainly implying that the backlash is dumb if nothing else. I know admitting you're wrong is incredibly hard and something I struggle with all the time, but man when you're a public figure, even as inconsequential as Kuchera may be, you look like such a fool when you can't do that.

I never really understood how Penny Arcade even got to the point of where it is today, it just produces the worst and unfunniest things of the industry. I am going to assume that enthusiasts are so starved for original content that they will lap up any filth with video games slapped on top of them.

Have a look at the strips at the very beginning of the archive. The art isn't great (which looking at Gabe's proto-Sand sketches which are pretty good, I'd put down to time and lack of familiarity with the tools) but it's honest and irreverent and it was new back then. If you look through the archives you can see their shift from consumer commentary to being more pro-industry, as they become more successful and more tied to the industry, but they do still occasionally bare their teeth. And their non-gaming side things like Sand and Lookouts are genuinely high quality.

Tycho's blog posts are usually well worth reading too, even if I don't necessarily agree with him, he's thoughtful and articulate and often brings up things I hadn't really considered and even when he's okay with an industry stance he mentions things he sees as questionable decisions.
