Fat Princess |OT| Misogynistic Cake

This game has had my interest from the initial videos that came out, but I think I'm going to hold out a little bit.

Still sounds a little buggy and with Wipeout Fury out as well I don't think I can pick this up over that.

Eh I have to agree here. Game just doesn't hold up. I feel like I'm already done with it. I gave it another chance today and I'm regretting buying this on a whim. I like a lot about it, but I dislike even more. I've played beta's that feel more polished than this. Problem however is not only the many bugs and connection issues, but rather how the game handles them. No cancel button, straight back to main menu, annoying theme song, etc. That however still isn't this games biggest problem. It's that if you actually manage to find a decent, though still laggy, game after an hour; I get bored with it very quickly. The actual combat just feels quite unsatisfactory at the moment and almost every game hangs in stalemate for way too long making it even less satisfactory. The game has pretty much killed any incentive to load it up already. :(

I still think the potential is there. If this game manages to fix its bugs, improve matchmaking (by adding a browser), balance the gameplay, add more to combat/strategy/classes, add more progression to the maps (upgrade those towers) and finally add free maps and modes(dungeon crawl, local play), then this game will easily win me over.

That's a lot though and I doubt many of those things will happen any time soon. It's a real shame, I really want to like this game. I just can't recommend it at the moment though. :(

Wow, I'm actually enjoying the game... Surprised to see this much hate. Its not perfect, by any means, but I'm having a good time. Definitely a 7/10, 8/10 for me.

yes, because people expected some quick fun shooting things, then they dont like the fact that it is actually very deep game where you have to know what you are doing, and then they blame their lack of skills on some idea that game is mindless, which is not.

Main problem with the game now is the fact that some people cant connect to the games. Rest is really well done. 1943 had even bigger problems at the start and its big game done by big studio. So give them a bit of time.

Umm, isn't it the opposite? Because of the top down view, the only accurate way to attack is by auto-locking, which basically kills any combat strategy, or at least reduces it to spamming the attack button while auto-locking onto various enemies. This game's combat feels very shallow and unsatisfactory, IMO. Regardless of what class I choose, all I do in combat is circle straffe around enemies while tapping square + autolock. Thats not deep at all.

Again, there's definitely a lot to be excited about with this game, but the utterly shallow combat kills any long term desire I have to play or become skilled at this.

y'all should be ashamed
So here's the deal with this game. Playing the first night left a sour taste in my mouth...it seemed a bit shallow, way too much mayhem, no strategy, etc. But last night was a blast. It really comes down to two things:

Playing without strategy/teamwork- not fun at all.

There is not a single class that works on it's own to storm the castle by yourself/catapult into the base and steal the princess. It's total mayhem on the battlefield, and lots of deaths are certain. This wasn't fun for me at all, and the gameplay seemed very shallow.

Playing with some people who use teamwork- like an entirely different game

So the next day I decided to give it a try, with more random people. This time both teams were using strategy, and holy crap what a different experience it was.

First off, once the game starts the opposing team would get control of the Ore fields and not let go. This was a huge boost to their level-ups and was a smart strategy. So we mined a single ore outside their zone and leveled up the Worker for the bombs. Then we all grabbed a bomb and blasted the ore zone to take control...but at that point they had already mined the field, and had upgraded several of their classes. Uhoh.

At this point we all grabbed as much cake as possible to prepare for an attack and fed that princess until she was huge. It wasn't long until there was a huge surge into the castle...they broke down the doors easily and got the princess, but she was too large for them to go very far. We managed to keep them at bay as we upgraded our classes and got the catapult ready. At that point two of us were workers and built ladders into the castle as we kept sending wave after wave of people into their castle to pummel their defenses. They didn't fatten the princess up like we did, resulting in an easy capture and winning the game.

The good news is that there were quite a few headsets going on, and none of those people were on my friends list...we were just all using teamwork. When Fat Princess works, it's one of my favorite online games ever. But if you don't experience teamwork...it's not that fun a game, and can seem quite shallow.

OMG yes...way too many are still looking out for themselves in this game/are little kids who don't know what they're doing/are teenagers and/or adults who just don't care and that is a good way to LOSE.

Maybe with server lists there can be some kind of ranking system ranking you to your skill level. That way you know you're getting on a good connection AND you're getting to play with someone serious about the game or someone who just mostly goofs off.

That would be nice and would expand upon our overall experience as gamers and purchasers of this product.

This question is stupid but how do I build stuff with the worker?

I stand at the green arrow and mash buttons but nothing happens.

When has a PS3 game come out, and worked perfectly online the first week? Everyone needs to relax.

Indeed, everyone relax. I can see why you're disappointed with the game, but do not place your final judgement yet.

Well said, Fat Princess is all about teamwork. If you join a game through matchmaking, I'm pretty sure you will end up disappointed, as the word teamwork is completely unknown in random games. When you get into a game with friends, where everyone is doing their best to help the team to win, it's a completely different game, just like Chubigans said.

I'll continue the chat invites now, but I'm pretty sure that my friend list is full again so you might have to wait a little while to get your own invite.

OT:
Anyone here familiar with photoshop? I would love my avatar getting "Fat Princess Defence Force" text and possibly even the red teams princesses face in place of Matoi's. Seems that I'm in the minority, who loves the game. :lol

I don't even have to read the thread to know that there are connection problems, and that people are whining/putting the game down because of them. It happens the same way with almost every large online game for the PS3, and you can expect multiple patches etc until it's fixed.

Just chill gaiz.

bought it yesterday and its definitely not bad

Its a $15 game so im not expecting miracles here. My observations:

Yes please make the towers do something in the mid to late game. Make them shoot arrows if someone is in the parapet or give a defensive or health aura or make charging up near one happen faster or have them affect spawn times - anything useful.

Upgraded ranger weapon not all that useful. I find myself sticking to the bow it seems to do better damage per second against enemies.

And most of all having to hold down L1 for 90% of the time you are playing gets old very fast. Locking on should be automatic, and hit L1 if you want to switch to something else

I'd love the game more if the GAF teams are more balanced in the future (half of GAF on one side, half on another sounds good to me). You guys stuck me with a bunch of randoms and at one point when I FINALLY got on the GAF team you left to make the games more fair.:lol

The team I was stuck on wasn't listening to me, had no headsets, and they were always off doing their own thing. I've been on GAF for awhile (heck, I've been on Jimbo's friend's list since LBP came out). I just wish it could have been more fair and that it is in the future. I had a bad time and now have ALOT of losses on my stats page when I used to have mostly wins. :(

Actually, I changed the teams to talk with KilgoreTrout about balancing the teams. I afked the whole match so it was ok, but I forgot to switch back in the next game >.<'.

Fat Princess really shines in Gaf games, one of the best online experiences I have ever had.

Well as a warrior you dont have to lock on at all times, and sometimes its better to block/ use charged moves.

Also like said earlier in the topic, the game plays more like an RTS would except everyone controls their own character.

EDIT: Towers might just give you life when entering, and serving as long distance resource depots, but you can use them as defense posts if you stand on top with a Ranger or Advanced Worker (maybe mage). There are also more modes than just the standard capture and defend the princess.

Have you played Gladiate mode? Go try it then come back and tell me that combat is nothing but locking on and spamming attack.

The character classes are pretty well done. I tried mage and archer. Both are pretty balanced and have their own winning formula.

Working together definitely makes a big difference. I love to escort Princess carriers with the mage. So many people got burnt at the same time :)

We have a host!

GAF Game in 1 Hour 30 minutes

Big thanks to TelemachusD for willing to host.

We will start with 32p games, and move to 8vs8 gaf only game, if we get enough gaffers online.

If you still miss your chat invite, message a pm to me on gaf.

See you soon, noble knights!

There will be cake!

Edit: In the 32 Player game, the team which side gaf will be on is RED

I'll be playing this the whole weekend if anyone wants to add me. I enjoy throwing bombs, turning people into chickens, and tossing princesses on to wooden catapults.

Havent got into a GAF game yet but I definitely see some of the issues that are bothering people.

The only 2 things that really bother me are:

1.) Connection/Lag issues. I'm sure these will be fixed, so I'm actually not that worried about it.

2.) It's only mildly entertaining while playing by yourself. I think even just 1 or 2 friends playing together would make it quite a bit better as even a small strike team seems like it can make a large difference. I imagine fully orchestrated 16 player teams would be amazing fun. Hopefully the gaf games continue for the forseeable future and I find a few people I like playing with, as I come from a 360 heavy gaming circle so don't really know anyone that plays ps3.

I think smaller games would help this feeling quite a bit though. Would be nice to be able to specifically look for like 16 player games or something, so that when playing by yourself you felt like what you were doing was more meaningful (sort of the difference between solo playing Arathi Basin vs Alterac Valley in WoW).

I have send the friend requests, for everyone who PM'd me and couple others from the last replys.

Still a hour to go for the game, so if you still miss the friend request, PM me on gaf.

My PSN inbox is full, or something. >_>

Oh and load up your catapults with a ton of giant bombs and chicken potions. Also try and find secret paths/ build siege springs around whenever possible.

About 40 minutes till the game.

Also if someone still wonders; "Who's this guy named Halba, who just keeps adding me!", that's me on PSN.

I'll repeat,

We will start with a 32p game, trying to get 16 gaffers vs. 16 randoms going.

The RED, will be team where we will be play.

So if you join the game and see that you're in the blue team, press start -> trianle and switch teams.

About joining the game itself.

How do I join the game, Drame?

- From the main menu: select play with friends, and choose the game I'm in that should do it.

Well that's about it, if everything goes fine we should get game up and running without problems.

Though I agree that if you have the random luck to get into a game with strategic players then indeed it can be quite a fun experience. Last night I played a game with some british dudes on voice over with one guy giving general directions and we swept the princess away from the other team with no hassle. However for the other 95% of the time, disconnects, bad AI and dumb players destroy the game.

Also there are alot of elements that really do not seem polished. Aside from the classes needing some attention (I as many never use the ranger-upgrade as it sucks compared to the bow), the game generally feels unfinished. The towers are really there for no reason after the first couple minutes and those first couple minutes aren't nearly as important as the designers might have thought they where. The initial start in upgrades isn't nearly as helpful as the game makes it seem. Resources after a while just stop being important (could be helped by the introduction of more buildable elements on the battlefield) and at that moment to me the game stops being as interesting.

Also the cakepieces need to spawn less often and more randomly over the battlefield making it more of a challenge to gather them.
Now if you pick a cake-piece up a new one immediately spawns. Thus feeding the princess becomes a boring task of going back and forth between the same two places.

I would love to join an online GAF game sometime later this week, to get a real impression of the online(so far, I've only managed to connect to one game, wich was frustratingly laggy)

I might try and record some of the matches, or at least capture the more action packed parts.

Also I have to find some way to bug them about custom soundtracks after they get the initial lag issues and other things ironed out :lol

I've found that 360 games that have betas have been pretty flawless when they came out to the general public. I can't understand how first party PSN games with betas are still F'd when they release. Plus, I wouldn't call this a "big" game. Uncharted 2... that's a big game, Fat Princess is a small downlaodable game. And honestly... the fact that they had a beta makes these issues inexcusable but I love the game and bought it so I'll stick it out.

I've had very limited time to play this game so far since I've been working so much but I'm 0/5 when searching for matches. I always time out and get returned to the main menu.
