Maybe I live in a different reality (not American), and I know I'm ignorant about the situation and American politics in general but even though I'm aware of the legal implications it seems really weird to me that "the possibility of mishandled classified information" is seen by the public as worse than, well... Trump. Anyone care to enlighten me?

It's really not, most people don't give a shit about these emails, and are completely sick to death of it, and basically everything else concerning this election.

The whole email thing is feeding a public perception that the Clintons "play by their own rules". Mishandling classified info is a pretty big no no, as well, as it can affect national security. But the first part is the major reason it's an issue, because people don't really understand how it can/would affect national security if it didn't, like, get people killed.

What happened to Benghazi? Theres been no mention of it in any of the debates or in anything since.

Trump mentioned it in the debates. And it gets brought up at every rally.

Who was nominated and serves under a Democrat. Comey is just doing his job, which he does well and impartially.

He definitely put his opinion on the matter pretty clearly in the spotlight when he originally came out with the info. I think he's doing his job, yeah, but I also think he's editorializing.

Trump's not a woman.

As kind of a cathartic cleansing experience im watching Real Time with Bill Maher right now. God bless this man, he make me feel so much better.

Wait, how does an ignorant fool like Trump not impact national security, and everything else you could possibly think of?

Guy literally thinks Putin is the US' biggest ally. His last campaign manager had Russian government ties. Asked why we don't use nukes more.

Mishandled emails are nothing.

Man, I thought this week was going to be a pretty tame, but BOOM, then this happens! What the hell was Comey thinking? He just jeopardized this election by lending credit to the public perception that Clinton has something to hide, when he can't even discuss classified information in an ongoing investigation, but he has to say something to clear the air before the election's over. He should have never made such an unprofessional move, and probably deserves to be penalized/suspended for it. Comey ironically just once again put himself into a baffling unnecessary and unprecedented political position. This election is nuts.

I guess it turned out be a somewhat worthwhile witch hunt for the most part. I mean, Trump and the GOP used what they could get out of it to discredit Hilary's judgement and paint her further as a liar during her tenure as Secretary of State. However, they have been focusing more on feeding off the drip-drip WikiLeaks e-mails to sustain their raging desire to see Hilary disqualified for the presidency and wanting to locked up for it too.

I assumed the question was asked within the context of potentially compromised classified emails vs Trump's sexual indiscretions.

When taken as a whole, the entirety of the Trumpster Fire is definitely a greater threat to national security than potentially compromised classified emails.

James Comey was extremely careless in his handling of this whole situation.

This is pretty much how I see it. Maybe just because I don't want to assume partisanship on his part when there are other equally plausible explanations, and this investigation has put him in a really shitty situation due to how insane the right has acted about it.

People on the Republican side have been roasting him ever since he said he wouldn't bring anything against Clinton after the investigation, so he's trying to seem impartial to them by disclosing this immediately, so they can't use it against him later. And in jumping the gun on something as (seemingly) meaningless as this to protect himself from the right, he completely opened himself up to the same charges of politicization from the left.

This whole investigation has been an absolute political minefield from the start. I do not envy him. Even the most politically savvy of investigators would undoubtedly make enemies no matter how they handled it. But he has not navigated it well, and this might be his biggest misstep yet.

There's nothing to be gained from capitulating to the demands of conspiracy-mongers like Chaffetz. If you do everything they say you're going to look like a moron, and anything less than complete compliance will have them howling high treason anyway.

He's a registered republican. That's it as far as I know.
There's no convincing evidence Comey has personal ties or investment in Trump or Clinton per-se; however, he is a supporter of the Republican party and has personally donated to numerous races.

Thanks

did you ask yourself the same question when he conducted the original investigation and found no wrongdoing?

No. That is why I hate myself for asking the question! I was just curious about theories, but yeah, it is probably conspiratorial thinking ...

Having a press conference to announce the end of an investigation, and all the following comments about Hillary being careless was unprecedented for the FBI. The FBI usually doesn't announce that an investigation is beginning or over, and they don't usually tell why.

The irony being that Comey charged Hillary with carelessless, then goes off and does this disaster. It's important for the health of the FBI that they not be used as a partisan tool - intentionally or unintentionally.

If there was a real bombshell dropping, I could sympathize with Comey - be accused of bias if you bring it up before the election, be accused of bias if you bring it up after the election. But given the extent of information he had unavailable, there's no way this can be viewed as anything less then him anticipating it would be big without any evidence. Perhaps not careless per-se, but poor judgement.

I am glad to see Hillary seems to have handled this in the best possible way she could have - if this is truly so urgent it required what essentially amounts to a press release, then let Comey be responsible for demonstrating that urgency and following through. Given that his inability to deliver the goods will infuriate the GOP as much bringing it up at all infuriated Dems, he's not going to have too many friends in the upcoming weeks other than Trump and his alternative reality.

Trump is a fucking goddamn rapist celebrity show host who made a barfing gesture at black beauty contestants.

Who gives a fuck about goddamn "classified" emails? She was Senator and Secretary of State. Fucking dude politicians and businessmen have fucked up worse and we've given them pass after pass after motherfucking pass.

I'm so sick of this opportunist right wing fucking bullshit, and I fucking hate this spineless sack of shit that all the spineless sacks of shit in this slave trade-founded nation have rallied under. Now that it's been brought to the forefront, we get it more than ever, America. You're a misogynist, white supremacist, stolen-by-genocide, Puritanical, military-over-education fucking garbage pile of a country.

Can you guys tell I'm upset?

So because Trump's bad, Hillary gets a pass? Right. Mishandling her emails the way she did shows a serious lack of judgement. Trump isn't even part of this equation - it doesn't take away from any of the horrible things he's done, but when we start giving elected officials a pass on misconduct just because we agree with their political positions and hate the other candidate it becomes a slippery slope.

Being investigated and having it brought up for years isn't enough for you?

Can you honestly say Hillary is likely to repeat the same mistakes with her email after all of this has happened?

So because Trump's bad, Hillary gets a pass?
No, which is why they've held hearing after hearing on it. And found her cleared of any serious charges every time.

Mishandling her emails the way she did shows a serious lack of judgement.
Which she has admitted to and taken steps to avoid in the future.

Trump isn't even part of this equation
Like hell he isn't. He's running for president of the United States against her. It's gonna be him or her. Of COURSE Trump factors into the equation, because you HAVE to compare and contrast them, pros and cons alike.

- it doesn't take away from any of the horrible things he's done, but when we start giving elected officials a pass on misconduct just because we agree with their political positions and hate the other candidate it becomes a slippery slope.
Which, again, nobody has. Hillary has been HAMMERED on this for years now and the government has gone after her on this time and time and time again and always come away with nothing substantial to hold against her.

Why are YOU so willing to ignore the countless investigations that have already happened and dismiss their findings (or lack thereof)?

How is Hillary getting a pass. She paid her political price. Unless you think this should be criminal, then the double standard of no criminal charges against the bush admin for using RNC server and deleting 22 million email but insisting on criminal charges against Hillary sounds like a partisan move.

Hillary paid her political price, the country still wants her to be president more than trump.

So Comey didn't even have any idea of what was on these devices claimed at the time he sent this letter to congress, much less the internal letter he sent when he decided he was going to do that. Unbelievable.

Get fucked, Comey, you dumb bastard.

She's not in jail. An FBI investigation that concluded that there was no criminal intent or activity is not enough. She should be shamed, flogged, her assets seized and homeless at the very least. In jail at the best.

She got away with it! The horror! So many people suffered and died at the hands of Hillary R Clinton! I will not rest until the day justice finds her...

I'm not going to say what she did was right, but seriously. The people that hate Hillary are hilarious. They won't even bat an eye at anything Trump does or did and refuse to believe anything people say about him but will believe anything, anything said of Hillary.

I have a bias, sure, but at least I know it. Jesus.

In what fucking world do you live in where Hillary Clinton has ever gotten a pass on anything? She's the most scrutinized politician in American history. Do you ever post anything actually true?

lol comey, wtf.

So he doesn't know if he has anything, but decided to stir the pot anyways knowing it would cause issues? Why not just wait until the evidence is verified?

Dear GOP: THERE MAY BE SOMETHING THERE, RILE UP THE VOTERS!

WTF.

Look at the partisan crap he stirred up today, based on no evidence yet.

I'd love it if in December Obama gets rid of Comey from the FBI. Comey has now shown he's willing to play a partisan game with the FBI despite "not knowing the significance" of the evidence yet, and that should be unacceptable behavior for someone in his position.

She wasn't given a pass, she was investigated by the FBI.

If there's any politician in America today who most definitely does not get a pass, it's Hillary Clinton. She was criticized for being sick, for fuck's sake.

This is bullshit. Now the whole news cycle this weekend will be talking about this. Meanwhile Trump grabs a woman's ass on video and noone cares.

Trump's part of the equation. Subtract Hillary, Trump is left.

They want to watch her suffer. They want her down, they want her on her knees.

I know it won't apply to everybody, but, they can't stand a woman having that much power. Especially over them. I'm not even sure it's intentional. I think it's wired in their brains except they refuse to think about it or challenge it.

Kind of agree with the panelist on Real Time - there was no good way to go about this. God forbid it came out after the election they had reopened the reinvestigation 11 days before the election and didn't announce it. They would have given legitimacy to the lunatics claiming a rigged election.

Sucks and I hope there is nothing to find.
