Female soldiers will not be playable in Battlefield 4's multiplayer or singleplayer

Due to the class based nature of Battlefield MP, this is what I assumed they were going to do. For example Chinese Recon class might be female, while the American is male.

In a military shooter with a realistic aesthetic, where everyone is wearing helmets and body armor, there's no need for there to be any difference.
If I were a creative director for a game like this, I'd take big issues here. I know people are pointing out the Hollywood blockbuster nature of the single player campaign as a focal point to its incredulity, but it's clear that they still want to have a "realistic" vibe for the multiplayer. Having an entire class be a single sex would be as ridiculous as having an entire class be a single race. And yes, I'm aware games have done that before.

I hate "forced" variety just as much as anyone, but I see no problem with including female soldiers in multiplayer.

I agree it would be awkward in the single player, especially if we are trying to make it realistic, since apparently it's only been a month since the ban in the US lifted for women in combat roles, and there isn't a single woman in any infantry or special ops roles.

But what is the damage that can be done by making a slightly slender model for multiplayer and recording a few female voices/grunts.

No one is asking for a femshep 50% representation in all aspects of the game here. Nothing will change either. It would be a great help if anyone can show some examples of how women soldiers in multiplayer would look, ie. full combat gear etc.

Then I am fine with it.

Just take the male bodies , add hair keep the same dimensions and we maintain the games balance.

Everyone wins.

BF3 for one.

But isn't their decision not to include female models also having an entire class be a single sex? DUN-DUN-DUN ;P

(Not following the game, but I'd also bet good money the Chinese faction is all Asian!)

Why does this seem to be an issue in 2013 in particular? I never heard people complaining about that before.

I guess there are more female gamers these days. Fastest growing demographic and all that marketing jazz. Funny thing is, it's all the marketing statistics that probably put them off of having a lady soldier in the single player.

Also? I am one of the 18%... of FemSheps.

why is it always there isnt any minorities in games, there isnt any girls, that game needs people of different races he has a cross tattooed on his arm. JUST PLAY THE GAME if your a gamer play the game and enjoy it have fun dont s**t yourself in angry because of something that has nothing to do with the game and more about the people playing it.

This is just weird. What's so hard about just putting the option in for the multiplayer. The game will probably let you customize the crosshair of every gun but refuses to let you choose a gender.

Alica was in the game, but I'm pretty sure there were not female playable characters... At least I dont remember there being? I know Vegas had them in multi-player for sure though.
Maybe it was GRAW2. I distinctly remember playing a female soldier in co-op in one of the GRAW games anyway.

The age old excuse/reason of rigging budgets going up x2 for the inclusion of female characters.

I for one love my all white malecast. Women, "minorities" and alike shouldn´t have something to do with games anyway.

Sometimes it's not an excuse. Creating a female shepard in Mass Effect 3 probably took a lot of money. Not only was Jennifer Hale one of the premier voice actors in the industry, but femshep then had to be in every scene, every cinematic, have thousands of lines of dialogue, etc.

All the time spent on CGI, voice over, etc. And in the end, only 18% used femshep in the game, and it was the same 18% in Mass Effect 2 as well. So you can justify an excuse then. They made Javik, who only had 1/10 the lines, and only a few cinematics part of DLC etc. I wouldn't mind an excuse there.

But this is something so innocuous. I mean all it takes is roughly 5-10 voices or sounds, and a slight difference in character modeling. Maybe make a figure slightly slender, add blonde or brown hair that is longer etc. That's it. Keep the same hitboxes, height, weight etc. Shouldn't be too hard no?

Maybe there isn't an audience for playable female characters? What was the Mass Effect stat? 15% of players chose Femshep...

This is a big EA game on a short development cycle remember - they can spend 500k on putting playable female characters into the game for a limited audience or they can spend 500k and produce some dubstep track to get the bros pumped. Maybe it is purely cold hard cost/benefit analysis that has led them to this decision.

Do you own a PSP? I am quite sure it was in that one. As for Graw 2? I think they were going to be but were not? Maybe it was added in DLC, I know they talked about it. Meh, still the only reason to not have females in it is either balance for smaller frames(has to be ultra realistic, duh) or because they want the aesthetics to be a 1 to 1, even if the mechanics play like halo...

Pfft. Look at 'em, eh? Coming over here, taking our jobs in videogames etc.

Actually, on a slightly different note, I'm really quite chuffed about arabic representation in gaming. Over the last decade or so there have been absolutely loads of us. In movies, too.

...Odd how that's happened.

I really doubt it would be hard to find a woman to do the job.

I think he was referring to animations being expensive, rather than suggesting that it would be impossible to find someone to do the mocap. It wouldn't be hard to find a woman to do the job but it wouldn't be free, either.

You seem angry about inclusiveness in gaming. Hegemony is rather ugly when challenged, isn't it?

This coming on the back of the whole females in games discussion i wonder what held them back from allowing females in the multiplayer, was it EA were they scared of the shitstorm from the mainstream press?. I guess we will never know, will we ever get to the point this shit doesnt matter and having a female as a lead character or another avatar to kill in mp wont even be a thought they will just be there?.

GRAW2 definitely had it in co-op because I did all the co-op achievements in that game and remember people bugging me because I chose a female character. lol

Can't understand why people are saying women fight in combat roles, in the US they only changed it so they can in January and in the UK they still can't. I personally don't fancy hearing "I'm getting my shit pushed in!" & "I'm getting fucked up the ass over here!" by a woman every 5 minutes, it's bad enough when a guy says it.

Well thats a shame, but then again your characters never talk in mp. But the voice guiding the squad in the sp trailer was a woman so there might be atleast a female announcing which flags/points have been captured in conquest.

If they included women, the profanity on Xbox Live would probably void the warranty on all the hardware.

But even so, excluding female characters was a stupid choice.

No. because outside of a handful of Western countries, woman are not allowed in combat roles. Heck, it was just a month ago, that the US lifted the ban. It'll probably be years before the first women are put into infantry after passing combat training. No woman has yet been able to pass it, in the limited trials they have done. And it'll be even longer before they are allowed in elite forces like the Navy SEALs or Army Rangers etc.

I personally believe that it won't hurt at all to have women soldiers in multiplayer. Even if it's a small number of women or men that will use them.

No one remembers that even Goldeneye had Xenia Onatopp and other characters to use in multiplayer. Yes, she was a main character, but there was no outrage back then about using her in multiplayer.

There is absolutely no excuse not to include female soldiers at least in multiplayer, especially after the US lifted the combat ban for women. I bet at some point EA / DICE will get slammed for Mr. Gustavsson poor comment, since misogyny in gaming is a hip trend in journalism right now. And to be honest deservedly so. Even if there isn't any kind of sexism behind that decision, at the very least it's simply a lazy one I don't have any understanding for.

Given that there's pretty clearly a fully modeled and animated female soldier in the campaign, suggesting doing that wasn't outside of their production costs, I'm going to guess they still have RAM problems.

they would also need to record separate voices and the systems around that for all combat factions too.

(i just think they are afraid of a "men shooting and teabagging women" backlash it might cause in Fox News, although female characters in online games is nothing new)

Here's the thing, remember that the worst thing about online shooters is the 11 year old kid that you calls you a faggot and fucked your mom.

These kids just won't be able to handle a female figure in a game, especially when one is slayed. I understand that EA is concerned that women will be objectified even more, and create a hostile environment for female gamers playing as women.

It's bullshit, come on.

I don't see how that would be a problem, there are plenty of online games that allow you to play as a woman and they've never caused uproar.

The 11 year olds in Halo seem to handle it fine.

"Pretend to be a dude so you might not catch abuse" isn't really an acceptable answer for women wanting to be able to play as a virtual woman in a game.

- In a game where your avatar is not determinate, it makes sense to allow female gamers to play as a female

- Improve education and information in the real world to reduce verbal abuse of women online isntead of choosing to stick your head in the sand over it

Seriously it takes no effort at all. Zombie Studios already commented that it doesn't take much to add females, just add voice over and scale down the model, breasts, ass, ect.
