FF17, what should it be like?

For me, please just be Nomura's sci-fi futuristic lots of belts FF7/8/13/15 setting like copycat.

No medieval stuff please.

Battle can be whatever, but something like FF12 again would be nice?

4 party members, all highly customizable thanks to a job system. Also ATB combat system.

Basically a sequel to FFV. Or a prequel, or whatever. But something like FFV would be awesome.

What it should not be is a lame DMC-wannabe with the most unnecessary side content ever. I've had more fun with F2P mobile MMOs than the side quests in FFXVI.

Nothing like Final Fantasy 16, more like Rebirth. Give us a job system that rewards grinding (and give us interesting stuff to grind on / work up towards) and has lots of customization options. Something like Final Fantasy XIV in terms of options (30 or so classes to choose from that can be changed out and individually leveled up). I guess that also makes it a similar job system to Stranger of Paradise, so yeah do that.

15 and 16 were terrible, was not a fan of the FFVII remakes either. It's time to acknowledge that this series is no longer for me, feel that way about a lot of jrpgs nowadays. They used to be one of my favorite genres, but it has passed me by.

Good.

I want a new aesthetic though. Or like VI or X.

Actually have a good RPG character growth system.

Good writing.

Base game length shouldn't exceed 40 hours. I'm older and ok with 35 hour rpgs.

They should honestly just settle with the Hybrid Action/Turn-Based Combat from the FFVII remakes for the next few entries, I've noticed that the most criticized aspect of the last FFs has always been the combat, so while not perfect, the FFVIIR combat has ultimately been the best one since probably FFXII.

It would also be nice if they finally made another Main FF with the classic Job System.

What's been missing since 10, an actual World Map and an airship that you can actually fly instead of it just being a form of quick travel. 13-16 felt especially small in scope compared to previous entries. Bring back discovery and make it feel not quite as linear, let the players go off the main path.

If they would just look at what they did with FFVII Remake/Rebirth and use that as a template for a new game, new characters, new world, new plot, new villain, new ability system... I don't know if it would be a major success in the marketplace, but I would be one happy mofo.

I dunno guys I heard FF17 is doing this weird thing where they are calling themselves Clair Obscur.

Though real talk I'd love a Xenoblade, Dragon's Dogma and Granblue Relink wombo combo of a game.

As for actual FF just give me Bravely Third.

As far removed from FF16 as possible.
I did like the older protagonists in FF XVI though. Clive is in his late 20s to early 30s in the game. A nice change of pace from the usual high school kids in JRPGs.

It's time to go back to turn based.
They should make it an FPS to show how serious they are about the western market.

The opposite of what OP wanted in every respect, there should only be one belt around the waist. Rein in the character design with less black clothing and frills. Anyone in the team suggesting a goth loli character will be taken out to sea and keelhauled to make an example.
Make it medieval styled after the first six games with some steampunk and ancient Clark tech technology. hell, go with pixel art too. (HD-2D pixel art, so general audiences don't get scared). More open world'ish map with elemental/celestial planes and randomly generated areas & loot à la Disgaea.

Move away from Amamo's style too and take it in a more anime style direction like FF7 did.

SRPG FFT style.

Went full action, now full turn based.

I would love S-E to do a large scale FFT type of game with some stuff from The Last Remnant in a main FF title.

- no open world. I liked FF 7 rebirth but the the ubisoft like side content was easily it's worst feature.
- not the usual teens as protagonists. give us adults, please
- don't be like ff 16. Only good things were it's darker tone and the epic boss battles.
- I would say go back to turn based combat but kinda doubt it will happen. Though maybe the success of BG3 will show them that tactical turn based combat can sell
- let us control party members and give us a lot of difficult post game content, also a lot of customization.
- Closest FF imo they should take inspiration from would be 10 (except for the annoying whiny teen mc)

Look at the structure of pre Final Fantasy X games, and work from there. 4-6 party members, ATB combat, and preferrably a job system. Good old world map, and only a few mini games that aren't too time consuming.

Bonus wish: Make it either cel shaded or with a watercolory look. Pre-rendered backgrounds wouldn't hurt.

Cowards should go back to make it turn based and with actual skill to beat.
I mean, Octopath Traveler 1 & 2 sold a combined 5m copies. Which is more than Rebirth's 2m-3m estimate.

Something like FFXII is not a bad idea. I would very much like a new mainline entry set in Ivalice. But I don't think they've ever done that (different mainline entries sharing the same world).

I would enjoy something like FFXIII again. Less angst though, and no mech summons, please. But do set it in a futuristic world. I would like to see an evolution of the paradigm shift of FFXIII too.

Like Rebirth, but without side content and much longer main story instead. Oh, and with spaceships, they make everything 10x cooler.

It should be the following:

Directed and written by Yasumi Matsuno
Game design and battle system design by Hiroyuki Itou
Character design by Akihiko Yoshida
Music by Hitoshi Sakimoto
Produced by Akitoshi Kawazu

Specifically kept away: Tetsuya Nomura, Yoshi-P

I'd prefer it to be more like FFX: turn based, Go back to a rich, elemental system and scrap the Game of Thrones style of the West. It should have a huge, open world to explore with lots of hidden beasts to conquer and summon.

Turn based for sure! but something like FFX - actually just make FFX in today's world, and don't commit to a new entry unless you really feel you have a really good story to tell (like FFX)

idf know.
I loved XV and loved XVI.
I think XV is obviously weird and experimental. Unfinished too.. but it got something. It's exceptional and one of games that impacted me most in recent years. It got heart.
FF16 on the other hand is very well made and exceptionally polished. It is a great and finished game. I loved it for all the different reasons.
And then 7 remake is great too and rebirth is good but bloated as fuck.

If it was up to me, I would want something more like XV. Imaginative but finished.
I know people shit on both of these games but cmon

edit: also - fuck turn based bs. This is not 1987. We don't have to imagine fighting. we can fight in real time with spectacle as 16 proves. its amazing

Anything but Nomura's hacky emo belt shit he always does, God I hate it so much.

Go high fantasy, go medieval, XVI got that right I think, just make it a more traditional fantasy RPG and less if a moody action game and it should be golden. The closer it gets to FFV, the better, I think we could use a job system FF mainline title; it's been long enough and I think the market is ripe for it.
