FF17, what should it be like?

FF9 was the last FF game with a worldmap you could manually traverse with an airship.

It needs to be more like that. Keep the graphical scale down to something like Dragon Quest with a job system and more cinematics.

Worldmap that u can travel with chocobos(later if u breed it golden chocobo that can reach any hard terrain) or/and airship is pure fun, definitely big plus for any FF game 4sure.

I think at this point Square Enix needs to accept the situation they're in, scale back the budget of the next game, and make it Turn Based. This isn't the 90s and the 2000s, and Final Fantasy is not a hard hitting AAA franchise anymore.

Nomura's sci-fi futuristic lots of belts FF7/8/13/

This

Also turn based. But if not, do something like FF7 Remake/Rebirth

Also maximum exploration/minimun handholding. Trust your audience like you used to. Put really good stuff in the game which can be easily missed without paying attention. Permit wandering off the obvious path

Also lots of environmental variety and minigames

The games have been so all over the place that at this point even I don't know. Hopefully something turn based with multiple playable characters. I also hope they keep YoshiP far away from whatever they make next.

Nine's aesthetic. A dichotomy between the whimsy look and the mature themes. Small party size (4-6). Turn based preferred, but a mix like Remake/Rebirth could work well.

My uncle brings Nomura his coffee. Here's basically what to expect:

-Full 100% medieval setting, except some characters have laser guns
-The protagonist is a little girl that is sick and coughs spiders
-Because of this walking consumes stamina. Running is not possible.
-Random encounters are back!
-The combat is real time action, but lightgun style. Move the cursor with the joestick to aim and select attacks from the classic menu. Do It before the enemy hides or you'll miss!
-For some intense moments, the combat goes full on rails. During this intense segments full of spectacle you can also double tap any button to bring up the lore Grimore and take a Deep dive into FFVII fascinating world.
-The world is 23 times bigger than FFVIIRebirth and features an endless number of procedurally generated dungeons.
-Main theme is "the power of frienship"
-Main love interest for the protagonist is a dark skinned, blue haired woman that self identifies as a chocobo on days and as a moguri at nights. Pronouns Cho/Mog
-The rest of the party can be created through an editor, Dragon Quest IX style. They will also follow you around and witness the tale unfold
-The game Will be sold episodically from the get go, starting with Episode 1 at $69,99 and Episode 2 at $49,99
-Each Episode contains 0.5 to 5 hours of new story content, new looks for the procedural dungeons and new customization options for party members that players can get opening loot boxes.
-All chests in the Game have a 50% chance of containing items or being a customization loot box. This includes story relevant chests!
-Once all 17 chapters have been released, the end of the story will still remain a mistery, but that is intentional as the ending will be released as a 12 hours length opera that will be performed once in the beach of Aomori city in the Aomori prefecture, Japan. As to being all of FFXVII fans together for this utmost special event, attendance will be free.
-Due to the conplexities of outdoor opera the event Will not be livestreamed or recorded. Please understand.

Please be excited!

Medieval stuff please and how about turned based and how about with airships and how about 8 inches AND THICK and FAITH-

Use FF7 Rebirth as a foundation for combat gameplay and general looks, and craft a new original world and story from there.

You know, just like old FF did... Stop reinventing the wheel when you have a solid frame already.

Fortunately Aomori is well worth a visit for their fantastic apple products, so flying out there is not a problem

Anything but Nomura's hacky emo belt shit he always does, God I hate it so much.

Go high fantasy, go medieval, XVI got that right I think, just make it a more traditional fantasy RPG and less if a moody action game and it should be golden. The closer it gets to FFV, the better, I think we could use a job system FF mainline title; it's been long enough and I think the market is ripe for it.
All Final Fantasy characters look ridiculous. FFV getup is no more ridiculous. They all look like girls with clown makeup and a wig on.

Remake Xenogears and fully flesh out Disk 2 and call it FFXVII... Just kidding
Or am I?

I'd like to see the next FF style and gameplay along the lines of FFIX something different from humans all the time.

I want a 4 person party with optional online play!!! A battle system that doesn't overly rely on staggering to increase damage and rewards timing and elemental resistances instead.

Honestly it is time to return to turn-based just for the hell of it. If Yakuza can make the switch and record the fastest sales numbers in its history then there is no reason why Final Fantasy can't do the same. There is also Persona continuing to sell well and hype for Clair Obscur. People simply do not care if a game is turn-based any more.

Yup those CG scenes are what I imagined Final Fantasy being, still with traditional JRPG turn-based combat.

Yet, we have turned into an action based series with overly weird stories and LGBTQ character representation.

Yes, who wants an epic, mature story with the best voice acting in the franchise, in a beautifuly designed world, fighting the greatest boss battles also best in the series by far.

I agree. Nothing like ff16..
Easily one of the worst FF games. Boss fights were largely a joke never mind the lack of basically any meaningful RPG mechanics.

They "just" need to redo Rebirth, but with new characters, setting and story (possibily a good one), and they'll finally get what FF fans wanted this whole time.

'dial m for moogle'

a gallant band of moogles sets out to discover how it is that, suddenly, there're no more people anywhere. &, yes, featuring only the latest/greatest flashy-menued, turn-based style combat...

To be fair, FF has been that for a long time. They've kinda always had a lot of that in their games tbh

So..if released today, no way would this not get all the smoke lol

no way someone was not going to be attacking this character lol

So this isn't really new in FF series, folks simply didn't make a big deal about it back then. So it didn't "turn into" anything, this is what FF has been for decades. Japan has lots of characters like this btw

The next Final Fantasy should focus on building a unique world with iconic characters.

All world building and story elements should be integrated into the gameplay without lengthy cutscenes.

Lore shouldn't be crammed into text entries. FF 17 should show a world whose past can be inferred by the things the player experiences.

Maps should reward exploration and be small enough that each part is memorable, but large enough to present freedom for some non-linear quests. Each new turn should induce a sense of wonder, and each quest should develop knowledge of the world and our cast of characters, even if it is not moving the main plot line forward.

There should be no time jumps, or cutscenes showing what the villain is doing halfway around the world.

Yup sure do.

Thing is, though, the job system from V is fun. Very fun.

Fun is the main component that FF seems to lack these days, thus, the recommendation for a return to the job system. I'm not talking about V's character designs lol, I don't remember a single character from the game, just remember liking the job system.

Metaphor provides a solid blueprint for the style of game Square should chase.

That said, I think they should return to a futuristic style game, since FFIX will be out in the next year or two, FFVII: Reunion by 2028, so 2029-2030 seems to be the target.

Important feature a must:

proper party system
proper loot system
proper reward system

Rebirth battle system with Kingdom hearts aircombat and knockback

Cyberpunk world full of magitech with some anime medeival flair

Openworld that's actually fun to explore and interact with by using your character abilities ala Zelda.

Stylized Art like FF12, Persona, astral chain of guilty gear strive.

Funny thing is FF games didn't really have that much side stuff to begin with. 10 had the end game monster stuff but besides that not that much side stuff..certainly no real quests to accept and turn in.

12 on the other hand, had all the hunts.

Imo FF doesn't need to side quest crap. Rebirth clearly needed it to fill out the game as the main story beats of the original game wouldn't last long.

Square should take note of clair obscure. Looks like a true FF 10 spiritual successor.

I can't wait for Clair Obscure to release. I hope it can be a decent RPG. I won't hold it to FFX standards though.

It can be whatever it wants to be, I don't care. But if it was up to me, I would make sure it is not written and designed by sexually repressed adults stuck in arrested development. There is only so much cringe I can take.

I was there last tuesday It was a nice break from the sonewhat overbearing Japanese Hot spot, but I would not travel back again unless something interesting going on at the same time as the Nebuta festival.

I'd love another ivalice game.

Combat id like them to try to have their take on persona/like a dragon infinite wealth/metaphor kind of approach.

I think a mix of real time and turn based with press turn using FF spells etc could be something special.

Hammer attack so you can do actual damage with a QTE. Always a great design decision. Don't you just love these damage tresholds and you've just wasted your long ass cooldown for nothing?

Or what about traversing the corners of a map for another 2 gil or material you don't need.

Yes, Amano's artstyle could legitimately be brought to life now instead of a generic anime look.
I feel like FF6 does the most justice to his style. I guess everyone has a different imagination, but I always saw games like FF6 and earlier as some neat blend between pastel/faded palette, cel-shaded (yet not so rigid), but still photorealistic… yet kind of flat. It's a difficult style to pull-up, and the way Square is headed it doesn't seem they're too vested in a highly stylized art direction for FF.

But yeah…very hard to describe, and I don't know if there's a single game that gets close.

FF7 Rebirth is the only thing I have liked from them in decades. Do something with that framework. Just no Chadley please!

I would like a game that uses a battle system like FF13-2 but with an actual good world, story and characters. Final Fantasy 16 had a good setting, but they needed to stick to the series roots. Just look how well Dragonquest 11 did as a turn based JRPG.

After the success of Metaphor and Baldur's Gate 3, a return to turn-based or some hybrid system with strong turn-based elements would grab them some extra attention provided they output the spectacle and fidelity the series mainline is known for.

Honestly Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is what I always imagined a Final Fantasy in the modern day would like if they kept going turn-based. The animation, UI, effects, and fluidity/speed of attacks just look like a great way to represent that kind of combat in a higher-fidelity budget.

Throw in some airship combat, a flexible job system like FF12, and good exploration that isn't open-world but just large levels with an overworld.

FF17 wishlist:
  1. Prioritise story (spend money here)
  2. turn-based
  3. Sci-fi/cyberpunky/steampunk (contrast to fantasy ff16)
  4. Fixed camera - you can have immaculate backgrounds when the camera is fixed and it's way cheaper
  5. Not open world, but have a lot of side quests to do

Its time for a new MMO. 11 to 14: 3 games. 14 to 17: 3 games.

They already intentionally nuked 14 with Wuk Lamat to make the transition to a new game easier. Set it in advanced future Ivalice and give it FF7 Remake graphics so anyone with a PC built in the last 8 years can run it.

Mix Metaphor's archetype system, with Exp33's action-lite elements, with Midnight Suns' positional/environmental elements. Get rid of the stagger>damage mechanic.

Make a great 50 hour game instead of a mid 120 hour Ubislop style game.

FF7/Cyberpunk type of setting, or Skies of Arcadia type.

  • Stylized art instead of trying to graphics whore.
  • ATB returns, maybe with a new twist of some sort (combo techniques, counters, etc).
  • Mix of tech and fantasy. Magitech from FF6 is a good example.
  • Overworld returns, airship/boat/maybe new type of traversal
  • Big cast of recruitable characters. At least 10. Some of them completely missable/tied to quests/decisions made.
  • Focus on story, both overarching main story and individual character stories. High quality animations on in-engine cutscenes happen semi-frequently while doing story bits.
  • Customization of party and their roles. Maybe outfits and weapons through sidequests, exploration. Something done where once you pick a role for a character, it's set, but not quite as restrictive as IZJS. There will be a reset tool towards the end of the game to reset any mistakes/regrets with character building.
  • Extremely competent villain without a redemption arc.
  • Great music (as always, they still haven't ever missed on this one).
  • Zero time-travel plot lines
  • Keep Yoshi-P away from it
My wishes, at any rate.

I don't agree with this argument that keeps coming up. Japanese character design is what it is—whimsical, and especially in Final Fantasy, always stylish before being anything else, let alone some kind of statement. We're in Japan, not the USA. This actually echoes that gag from The Hero Yoshihiko.

It's the same with the older Star Trek series, which were supposedly ultra-woke—but that wasn't really the case. Out of the 725 episodes, you've got maybe 3 to 5 that actually tackle the topic head-on. And even then, when you look back, the rest of the show is highly hierarchical. Starfleet is a structure somewhere between the navy and the idea of exploration, but it's very codified and structured. Even the representation in The Original Series fits within that framework.

But back to Final Fantasy—its DNA is, above all, that of a Japanese work, shaped by shonen and 80/90s anime tropes.

it's own thing.

Continue the FF tradition of changing and shaking up the franchise with each entry and don't kowtow to internet demands.

maybe it'll miss or maybe it'll be a smash hit, better than just getting rinse repeat games though.
