FIFA World Cup or Olympics?

Well, since my country (The Netherlands) always seems to do well in FIFA and only has a few outstanding people for the olympics, I'm going to say FIFA. Also, football is more entertaining for me.

FIFA World Cup

As a whole, probably the Olympics, but as a single event, the FIFA World Cup final is the biggest event in the world.

Gotta say, in terms of hype, I think the World Cup manages to edge the Olympics out.

More people I knew (and the public here in general) we're going nuts over S. Africa or Brazil than Sochi or London.

Only time I was certain everyone's Olympics hype here outdid the WC was when my city hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics, so that was inevitable.

World cup gets more hype over here, since there's more of a competitive feeling. We're all following own and other countries progress, and it's all about a single sport that is already popular.
Olympics are about sports that most people don't really care about, and with each country having its own special event where it can win a medal. If you're not a sport geek it's the sort of things you stumble upon when channel surfing, you never say "hey let's not forget to watch the archery finals tomorrow !"

World Cup may be more hype but fuck me the last Olympics was London especially with BBC iplayer coverage. I was watching horse dancing, what the fuck is horse dancing? I don't know, but I am watching bullshit, random non-sports because it's the goddamn motherfucking Olympics.

Most corrupt: FIFA
Most hype: FIFA/World Cup
Most damaging to a city/countries finances: Olympics
So many host cities/countries end up spending millions and millions to build all these buildings for very specific olympic events only to have them A. go under used or B. not used at all.

The truth.
The Olympics attracts the most casual of following. Even when you're watching you're hardly paying attention.

Hell, even though Vancouver did host 2010, pretty sure 90% of spectators here only cared for men's/women's hockey. It was seriously the only sport being streamed in our high school classrooms at the time.

The IOC is hella corrupt as well, as much as FIFA is debatable, but they're close. FIFA also has countries building facilities that will go after the events pass, hell, Brazil uses the stadium the final was played in as a bus parking lot.

I was wondering this myself the other day. The Olympics includes way more countries obviously so it should draw more people, but considering its one sport, the World Cup is an absolute monster of an event. City centres get packed out for for the big matches with hundreds of thousands of people on the streets watching the game in public places as its televised on big screens around the city.

The World Cup is definitely more exciting the watch for the sheer spectacle of it as it is far more focussed but the World Cup is pretty much always a packed out event, the past few Olympics actually look like they didn't draw huge numbers of spectators, Athens in particular was like a ghost town, I actually felt bad for them, I can't imagine how much they lost on that one.

I went to Sydney Olympics and there was definitely a lot of people around, saw the finals of the Soccer and some track and field. The closing ceremony was huge, everyone went down around The Rocks and Sydney Harbour to watch the fireworks. It was chaos. Nearly got crushed.

The World Cup is the king. I kinda hate international football as it exists between major tournaments but you can't beat the World Cup and the European Championships. Even when the matches aren't great there's fantastic underlying stories, like 2010 where the ball was rubbish and flew into orbit. Oh and the France team imploded and it was fantastic. 2014 had this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjIj_GlvLD4

Twitter comes alive during a major football tournament. Everyone around the world staying up until 2AM to livetweet Japan vs. Ivory Coast >>>>>>>>

But...the olympics have football matches as well.
Lacks the quality, the pomp and the pageantry of the World Cup.

WC is hype. Think it gets the biggest TV ratings and of course, when FIFA comes to town, you stop being a country and you get to give ALL of the revenue to a supra-political organisation.

What's not to like?

Would still love to see it in England before I die.

World Cup was waaaaaay more exciting for me. My first time following the World Cup and it was fantastic. Had it on at work, the GAF thread up. Nothing better. There's actual suspense when America plays in the WC. Olympics are too easy for us.

Olympics is really only big for a few different events, at least around here.

Like nearly everyone watches Swimming, Gymnastics, Track, etc. but not many watch Fencing or Equestrian and that stuff

FIFA by far.

Yeop, thats a pretty big disparity. Tour de France bores the piss out of me, dunno why its such a big deal.

I also enjoy the Winter Olympics more than Summer, Australia only does well in Swimming, so for the first week its all they show on TV, then for the sedond week they just show reruns of the swimming all day. Its fucking annoying, I want to see discuss and hammer etc but nope. At least with the Winter games because we suck at everything, they show a larger variety of whats going on. Canada was awesome.

Olympics >>>>

It's not even a question. And it already wasn't even a question back before 2014.

Just thinking about previous World Cups fill me with so many different emotions. I can't say I've ever felt like that during any of the Olympics.

The World Cup, easily. No sporting event grips the world in quite the same way it does. The Olympics don't even come close.

We gave you the Olympics you bastards.
And democracy. And everything else.

I like the Olympics better. But, well, I live in Germany.

WELTMEISTER!
WELTMEISTERINNEN!
hoffentlich

World Cup is much more important.

This is what the Museumplein looks like when the Dutch team is playing:

You don't get that kind of enthusiasm for any other sport.
