FIFA World Cup or Olympics?

At least in the World Cup I can watch almost all the matches (except for that one group round). I lost interest in the Olympics because:

1- I can't find a place here that shows everything;
2- Sometimes more than one event is happening at the same time.

And yeah, I know DVR exists.

Watching something you know is happening live makes such a huge difference, that I will enjoy an obscure sport (medals on the line of course) more that I catch at 8 in the morning if I know it is live, than the women gymnastics final in prime time if it is not live.

Yeah NBC ruined it by treating it more like dateline and their talent shows rather than actual sports

Yeah, the World Cup was so easy to watch all of the games. I had the watchespn thing or whatever and it would just switch right over to the next game even if it was on a different channel since some were on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 etc. I think I watched 95% of the group stage and everything above that. The Olympics is a clusterfuck compared to the World Cup.

World Cup without question! No event can match the hype and spectacle! Even America is slowly starting pay attention to it but it still doesn't rank as high as the Super Bowl for them. Globally though the World Cup Final is probably the most watched sporting event.

I think the most watched part of the Olympics is the Opening Ceremony which for me is the best part about it.

World Cup

I think some may even want to make the case that the Olympic football competitions are the biggest event of the Olympics (in terms of attendance, it was very popular in 2012).

Most corrupt: FIFA
Most hype: FIFA/World Cup
Most damaging to a city/countries finances: Olympics
So many host cities/countries end up spending millions and millions to build all these buildings for very specific olympic events only to have them A. go under used or B. not used at all.
I think I read that the World Cup in Brazil built a stadium which displaced thousands of poor people and did not adequately relocate them.

Didn't went to work when we won the world cup last year. Would never party too much for a fucking gold medal at the olympics.

Eh, the most expensive brazil WC Stadium is now a place for childrens birthday parties.

Not just one.

Yeop, thats a pretty big disparity. Tour de France bores the piss out of me, dunno why its such a big deal.

I also enjoy the Winter Olympics more than Summer, Australia only does well in Swimming, so for the first week its all they show on TV, then for the sedond week they just show reruns of the swimming all day. Its fucking annoying, I want to see discuss and hammer etc but nope. At least with the Winter games because we suck at everything, they show a larger variety of whats going on. Canada was awesome.

Waah, people like something that I don't like.

Tour de France is hype as hell, the TV coverage alone makes it realy exciting with its slow burn competition and the nerve wrecking endings.

If you live in UK or France, Woof

As I stated to someone else, Brazil was the first host country I'm aware of where things were that bad. Also keep in mind they won the bid for the Olympics too so there is a kind of double whammy going on with them. Off the top of my head I have definitely seen articles pointing out the amount of abandonment in places like Greece, China, and a lot of Soviet Era countries. It'd be awesome if every place could end up doing what Lake Placid did, but that's not possible.

Only the athletes themselves care about the Olympics. Everybody cares about the World Cup, except some backward nations where football isn't popular *coughusacough*

Africa is also bad. It always depends on who does it and how.

Even the Americans are slowly discovering the hype that is World Cup. The last World Cup made even the country tune in in a record numbers and alot of them don't even care about the sport.

From a North American perspective, Olympics destroys the World Cup in interest. However I'm sure the World Cup is much more popular world wide.

maybe if it happened today.

Yeah the moon landing did 600 million, but the world population was 3.5 billion. I'd imagine naturally it would do 1.2 billion today. How much did the world cup do? I know it did over a billion but stupid google won't stop giving me US ratings when I try to research it.

It's truly baffling to see so many people say the Olympics. It's not even a contest, NOTHING comes even remotely close to the World Cup worldwide. Heck I wouldn't even be surprised if EURO and Copa America beat the Olympics too.

I'll take the Champions League over both, thanks

In Germany it is The World Cup, the streets are empty during a match of the german team

The olympics are a reminder that other sports exist

In the US, the Olympics wins the TV viewership count handily (though it isn't an utter stomping like some have suggested - 26M for the 2014 World Cup Final vs. 41M for the London 2012 Opening Ceremony). Worldwide the World Cup is much bigger.

I'm not sure you can compare the final of the World Cup to the Olympic's Opening Ceremonies. One is the final of a major sporting event that appeals to sports fans and the other is basically a performance with musical acts and a lot of pageantry that appeals to a much larger segment of the population. There's literally people who watch the Opening Ceremonies and nothing else.

World Cup is much more important.

This is what the Museumplein looks like when the Dutch team is playing:

You don't get that kind of enthusiasm for any other sport.

That's amazing, completely transformed the space and that is a HUGE area.

Uh, if you're outside the U.S everything is just WORLD CUP WORLD CUP, you can't escape it. It's literally every where you look and hear. Olympics is not even on the same level.

Especially when your country is in the WC and they're playing a match, the streets are silent and when shit happens it's like a sudden explosion of noise/sound throughout the city.

If you are in a football loving country which is the #1 sport it's obviously WC. And most countries are.

Most definitely the world cup. I think a billion people watch the final. I like the olympics but the WC is on a different level.

Olympics for me, three reasons:

- lots of different sports and countries, great colourful festa

- England always performs horrendously at the WC, while it gets a good couple golds at the Olympics

- such views
