Fighting Games Weekly | Apr 27 - May 3 | NeoGAF actually plays games?!

What's there to lose? Getting that vortex down will help speed up getting comfortable using her for real matches lol
I was playing this pretty good Ibuki player in casuals last weekend.

I could be winning for the whole match, but one knockdown could = death. So ambiguous :/
She's fun until you have to fight Blanka.

So like every other character, I guess.
Blanka isn't an issue.
only if you enjoy winning
I mean.. I do but.. she looks fun tho

I always wanted to ask this, so does Ken Bogard pay Topanga to use their footage of World League? He seems to always show and commentate the matches on his youtube channel.

This throw is unbreakable on back turned opponents.

Well, all throws are, but look at this one.

That's from before 5FS, right? Way too little bloom to be FS.

The art direction VF stages have is what I would love to see for SFV. That will never happen though. Ono loves the silliness too much. SF4 and SFxT's art suffered a lot from that.

SF4 stages are actually really beautifully done. I mean, okay, yawning hippos and all. But Overpass and Festival at the Old Temple pretty much look like paintings.

What could they do to not make SFV feel stale?

Make it not SF4. As a rule, if SF4 did it, it's probably a bad idea.

They totally need to transfer SFxT Jin's moveset to a new guy.

THISSS.

Also include universal overheads, 3s style.

Yess. Also make them comboable and move people forward a good bit :>

While maybe not dominating top tier, we had Honda in Super. Hard to say who was top tier in that game though.

Akuma and Fei :p

Hmm, should I snag uniel or xrd? Getting either one on the PS3 because my stick doesn't work on PS4.

You should get both. They're great games.

Why would you buy the HK version now, when the US version is out?

Also, you traded in a PS3 and paid an extra $133 to get a used replacement? That's a pretty crummy deal considering used super slim PS3s are like <$100.

I got a new PS3. Best Buy was willing to take my PS3 for 100 dollars and GS was offering 40. It was a no-brainer. Problem was that they had no used PS3s - only 500 gig slims brand new. Considering the nature of why I was trading in my PS3 in the first place (shotty ethernet port) I figured it'd be best I get a new one anyway. Plus, it's 500 gigs, so the resale value should be good.

I'm trying to re-download the HK version because that's the version of Xrd I bought for PS3 (unfortunately). I bought the US version when it went on sale for 20 bux on PS4.

What could they do to not make SFV feel stale?

Why not just admit to yourself that you don't like Street Fighter? Granted, custom moves would be interesting, but I doubt they could do anything with the franchise that wouldn't adversely affect its core emphases that would make you appreciate it.

Makoto's normals are specifically designed to counter poke everything. She doesn't need the walkspeed.

Doesn't this conflict with what you stated previously in regards to what you valued in good fighting game design? Yes, Mak's normals are great for counter-polking on paper, but her walk speed limits her capacity to practically do that because she cannot will herself into a position to bait normals since her spacing has to always be pre-emptive or just plain fortunate. Her walk speed also allows her to get zoned out pretty damned hard. The amount of guesses she has to make extends all the way to her neutral game, and I think that's horrible. So despite her great normals, her footsies are relatively weak - correct me if I'm wrong. But that's my evaluation of the character.

You stated before that powerful/versatile universal options allowed for more even matchups - slow walk speeds are the anti-thesis to versatility and power.

SFV needs faster walk speeds and dashes across the board for me to get truly excited about it. I haven't played Chun-Li since I was 5; I don't care if her walk speed is faster, relatively.

In 3S, dashing in on a whiffed sweep or even cr. MK could net you a legit mixup or even punish - hell, dashing in at neutral could be a legit mixup if your opponent is just looking for a normal. I miss when SF had that kind of speed to offer those kinds of options.

I don't recall Rufus having high health.

If memory serves me right, Rufus had 1150 health. Which was the 2nd highest in Vanilla SF4 only behind Gief I believe. Back then it felt like it took forever to kill guys like him, Sagat, and Gief even though damage was higher for many characters back then.

Um, I'm really open about not liking Street Fighter...on this forum and in person. I don't think that has anything to do with talking about making sure SFV isn't stale for the people that are interested, or having a discussion about what would make SFV more interesting for people here. You have the weirdest misunderstandings.

I've never seen you openly state that you don't like SF, just that you don't like SF4, which is saying something completely different.

But keep throwing out that shitty deflection about my lack of ability to comprehend things, maybe I'll believe it one day.

*edit*

I remember seeing you making comments regarding never seeing a character in the franchise that interested you, so maybe that's where you expect me to draw the implication from, but not liking a cast says little about how you feel about the games themselves. I think BlazBlue is great gameplay-wise, but I wouldn't touch it with a 10-foot pole because I can't stand the characters. Same with Tekken.

Now that Mortal Kombat and Smash have custom moves, I feel like every fighter is going to feel stale and behind the times if it doesn't allow you to customize your gameplay experience to some degree. If Street Fighter V doesn't have a similar option, it will feel pretty lame.

I really don't want this in SFV or KOFXIV.

If it's something that I can easily anticipate then it probably won't be too exciting (which doesn't mean it won't be good), I would like Capcom and SNK to surprise me with something new/fresh.

Pretty much, which is why I have a problem with the notion that custom moves should be added just because they worked well in other games. Don't want to see the CoD/Marvel/SF4 syndrome crop up in FGs this gen. Let each game do their own thing.

Though, I do have a feeling SFV will be the safest SF to date.

New mechanics are incredibly overrated for me. Nothing I ever get excited about, most of the time they're either really scrubby or really bad.

See Marvel 2>Marvel 3, what new mechanics were actually an improvement over what Marvel had already become? Just added stupid shit like X-Factor and TAC which were glitched the fuck out and added 3 minute long infinites.

See Melee>Brawl. Added tripping and actually removed popular gameplay mechanics. Added things like Final Smashes which nobody gave 2 shits about.

Brawl>Smash 4. Reworked the ledge game which had been a beautiful staple of the series since its inception, dumbed it down for scrubs for no reason whatsoever. Removed DI. Added a comeback factor which rewards you for losing. Awesome new mechanics for sure.

Guilty Gear Xrd. Added an awesome mode called Danger Time which is probably the worst clash mechanic ive ever seen, even worse than Injustass' clashes which is pretty hard to do. To be fair though Xrd stayed pretty true to its roots guilty gear is probably the most consistent across all iterations in the series.

SFxT........well yea you guys get my point.

i wish all fighters had a create a character mode of some kind

like def jam's or even rival school's

now that "2D is dead" there's really no excuse

doesn't even need to be competitively viable, though that would be a plus

e: i like final smashes as a mechanic, it's just a shame they're tied to an item instead of being something characters can just use, like a proper super move

Argh, I forogot my HK log in info.

Ugh, so I thought if I had the PS4 version of Xrd bought, I could DL the PS3 version free? It's looking to charge me 50 dollars.

If it isn't there will be massive whining about time spent on a mode "no one plays."

I think I've said this before but I still think there's room to bring back a game like Tobal 2 with its single player dungeon crawl / level up experience, but that still has a base set of characters & arenas for competitive tournament play. Add in the type of multiplayer from Souls-esque games.

The section of your footsies tutorial where you explain how Makoto and Dudley work blew my mind. I've been playing Dudley since Super and was every bad online player you talked about. Your video was really a huge help in forcing me to look at the game in a new light.

Oh yeah, I forgot to ask this here.

Hi guys, is there a way to see if my monitor has input lag. I have this monitor. I've been practicing combos in street fighter for quite a while and was never actually able to land them. After going on the sound of my button inputs rather than looking to see what actually happens on screen i've dramatically improved. I discussed it with a friend and he said that it might be due to input lag. I don't really have any experience with this so is there a way I can test this? Thanks.

Any ideas?

See if it's listed on displaylag.com because if so, they've already done the work for you.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately it's not. A newer version of my monitor is and they have similar specs. Displaylag gives it a great rating.

What console are you playing on? If it's PS3 or PC, then it will have more input lag than 360.
