Fighting Games Weekly | Apr 27 - May 3 | NeoGAF actually plays games?!

Damn, I guess it's time for a new monitor. Is there a limit I should be looking for? Like 10ms or less?

Don't rush into anything. 1 frame of lag is something, but it's not like you can't adjust for it.

Well 1 frame = 16 ms so at least less than that would be nice. Depending on who is measuring and how it might not be possible to measure input lag once it gets really low. All monitors will probably have at least some input lag.

IMO 1 frame of lag is only meaningful if you're really good. I can't imagine a situation where I can hit 1 frame links consistently with 0 lag so I don't mind playing on TVs with 2 frame delay. More than that does start to bother me.

A lot of fighting games have some sort of input delay simulation in practice mode now so you can mess around with that and see how things feel with different amounts of input delay.

I think I measure my TV input lag at around 30ms or something? So almost 2 frames? For the most part I think I am ok with that. It's obviously a bit harder to do things on reaction, but since combos/links are about muscle memory it's not that important. Even for the reactions the 2 frames of lag would probably not make a giant difference in a casual environment.

While you may adjust at home with some input lag, you will have a decidedly worse experience if you go to a tournament or play outside of your usual setting due to that fact.

Even if you don't plan to enter tournaments, anything over 1f should be unacceptable for most people..

Brawl>Smash 4. Reworked the ledge game which had been a beautiful staple of the series since its inception, dumbed it down for scrubs for no reason whatsoever. Removed DI. Added a comeback factor which rewards you for losing. Awesome new mechanics for sure.

DI was never removed; it was adjusted such that it worked in all directions regardless of where you were sent. It made the difference between good DI and bad DI way too huge so yeah that sucked, but it was reverted to the old DI with the Wii U release so that's not even relevant any more.

New ledge mechanics are maybe the single best change in Smash 4. It was a staple, sure, but I wouldn't really call anything about hanging on a ledge to completely invalidate someone's recovery "beautiful." I don't see how encouraging actual offstage play, removing the ability to stall on ledges, making non-damaging recoveries viable and forcing players to make decisions more quickly dumbs anything about the ledge game down.

Like yeah rage is dumb but it's not that significant. I get what you're saying but smash 4 is a pretty weak example if you wanna talk about bad mechanics.

Asus has been pretty damned good about having at least one or two <1 frame lag monitors released every year, since the so dubbed "Evo Monitor".

I have one of those, and it is still working just fine.

But I use a newer Asus with even less millies that has a larger screen that is also IPS.

Asus makes really good monitors, if debatable laptop designs.

The issue isn't about 1f links which are based on rhythm - as long as the lag is consistent, you can hit those. But stuff like KOF and 3S hitconfirms can get gnarly.

DI in Smash 4 still has elements of vectoring in the game. Vertical DI is the same as in other games, but horizontal DI is actually the same pre-patched. You're actually going to kill yourself faster if you try to do DI on horizontal recovery like in previous games instead of doing nothing.

Thanks for all the help man. I'll try practicing using the input delay feature. Was so gun ho because I always wanted a second monitor.

Lol don't actually add extra input delay on top of what you have already. It's supposed to be a simulation for an online environment.

You can still get a new display, you just need to know what to look for, shop around, and keep in mind that it's not going to make a huge difference so don't spend too much money.

See you there! The guys I'm travelling with will be staying at the comfort Inn near the convention center. Or are you only coming for Sunday?

I haven't been practicing VF :(
I'll be there the whole weekend, might be staying with a vfer, dunno.
if you want to practice the week before I'll basically be practicing all week.

Me too. I'll see you

in FS.
See you then!

Is it possible to add to the KI EVO pot by buying the KI soundtrack somewhere? I'd like something I can actually use without ever buying an XBone.

Also, browsing through A-CHO's youtube, it seems like people in Japan still play Melty a hell of a lot.

2 things:

In Japan, you can find games in basically anything somewhere, and a-cho is in a good spot for the west side Melty players.

Transcendental Orchestra is coming up very soon, it's a Melty national 3v3 with qualifiers happening everywhere. This time of year last year had a lot of play too.

BTW the trailer is absolutely incredible in all it's self aware glory https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PuWkdGNOEY

So don't DI perpendicular if I get launched horizontally? What do I do?
