Fighting Games Weekly | Mar 2-8 | Capcom does the Monster Nash

The amount of defensive play MvC2 has is pretty underrated. Pressure is crazy, but there's still a ton of good planned out plays and spacing. MvC3 has so many crazy options that I feel like it's basically inevitable to get opened up. So stressful to keep up good defense in that game.

At the same time, it's fucking crazy hype the first time you truthfully block solid Wolverine/Zero pressure and catch them on a bad call. Haha.

It also teaches you to pick a top tier

I've never been like that with my fighting games, even Marvel. I've always picked characters I liked and made them work rather than see who's strong and chose them.

I think the highest-tiered character I've had on any of my teams is Doom, and he's only on one of my dozens (and DOZENS) of teams that I've made over the years.

And for SF4 I played El Fuerte, Dee Jay, Blanka and Honda as a few of the many characters I mained, so I don't have to say much after that.

That's why it feels so good when you know you blocked some nasty shit safely though. I love that rush in Marvel 3.

I can't speak for most of those, but you are one dirty bastard for playing with ST Vega.

How do I get into ST? Like the original one without all the redrawings from Udon (if there ever was a re-release of the game). Game seems like my cup of tea, enough frustration to make you get better but not enough to make you quit.

Wait until you make friends with THawk or a Mao-style Claw player.

Maybe he really means gamergate

There's emulation. Every console port of ST has been pretty inaccurate in some way or another. Emulation won't be perfect, but I guess it'll be close (and illegal).

So Jiyuna is pro-streamer now too? Of all the people who could do it, Aris and Jiyuna were my first picks.

edit:he's trying it out while unemployed apparently.

Noise complaints is what got me lol

Ugh. I love BB but only two new characters, one of which is Lambda, still feels extremely sparse.

It doesn't release in Japan for another month and a half. Is there any chance we'll get a console exclusive character announcement before then? Possibly (sigh) DLC?

If it's like the previous game with the Extend subtitle, I assume that what you see is what you'll get.

That's jiyuna for you. maxcpm jokes and such, but I don't think he takes it all too seriously. He is a fantastic streamer if your timing aligns with Japan time though.

I thought Jiyuana was a teacher in Japan?

He is. He's on break in between gigs.

Yeah, like most said, it's going to be tough to get into the OG game legally, but the scene is till out there. I still have my Japanese import of SSF2X for Dreamcast, thinking about it too.

Even though it's still Street Fighter at the core, this was Street Fighter without the balance of scaling and other things that made fighting games so-called "fair" now. Lots of individual tricks, frametraps, grab setups etc. that it'll take you a while to get into, but there are lots of guides out there to help you get the basics down really well.

Characters in that game were amazing, everyone had something dirty in that game to sort of keep them viable. Which is sad to see how characters like T. Hawk and especially Dee Jay in USF4 are nothing compared to their ST versions.

Get on fightcade and challenge anyone with under 100 ping, and just try to tick throw them. The game can be really simple to play at lower levels and almost all your improvement is rapid and based on knowledge instead of execution. It's immediate, raw, and really dirty; like meth to SF4's caffeine.

The ST discussion reminds me that I downloaded HDR during the sale a few weeks ago and haven't played it at all yet. Are there even people still playing it?

Man, since CSE was the first one i got i never realized that one only added Relius and a couple single player modes. Now i understand the bitterness i sometimes hear surrounding that title <.<;;

. . . That makes me think, what do people feel is the minimum amount of content a sequel or expansion should have to not seem like a ripoff? Assuming there will be some rebalancing and possibly new system mechanics, does it -have to- have new characters? How many?

For me personally i really like to see new stuff, so if there's only a few new characters i lose interest quickly. Maybe if the systems overhaul was so major it's barely recognizable anymore.. but that never happens.

Those reasons are why I want to play it.

Honestly, looking over my list of characters in fighters, it seems like I trend more towards "flexibly solid" characters more so that outright dominant forces. I kinda exaggerated that last post on Marvel for the sake of the point, but even in that game I was picking favorites. Viper/Dante/Strider was the team I wanted to play from second one, but as Marvel was also my first serious fighter ever and people were already talking about how crazy technical Viper was, I dabbled in two other teams before I felt confident enough to go all in with that trio.

Will definitely give this a look later. After attending the Brooklyn Tech Triangle's panel on the state of the game development industry yesterday, I'm just gobbling this stuff up.

Tangent: If you guys were looking to pick an engine between Unreal 4 and Unity to learn for making prototype fighters/games, which would you go with? I eventually want to learn both
(because I'm a masochistic try-hard)
but I'm thinking Unity is currently better since you can make shit for anything under the sun using that engine.

2D or 3D?

Regardless, try asking in the indie dev thread, they probably know better

And not that you should be calling yourself a tryhard, but if you were really one, you'd roll your own engine

I have no idea what to do with this last of us code I'm sitting on that I got with my ps4. Anyone know how much they typically go for. Maybe Ill put that towards mkx or something

Let's see who I've tended to play over the years:

Street Fighter II: Ken/M. Bison (Dictator)
Street Fighter IV: Akuma
SFxT: Akuma/Zangief
Marvel 3: Wesker/Dante/Strider/Hulk/Sentinel/Haggar/Wolverine/Magneto/Doom/Vergil
Smash: Link/Wario
Injustice: Batman
Killer Instinct: Spinal
Virtua Fighter 2: Kage-Maru
Soulcalibur: Mitsurugi
Mortal Kombat: Sub-Zero
Divekick: Mr. N

Any patterns in there? Guess I tend to pick pretty vanilla/popular characters.

I sold my copy of TLoU that came with my PS3 for 35 cold hard American dollars. You should be good.
