Thought variations were more like Slash/Bust from SamSho 3/4 than Melty Moons.

PC version is really good for it as well. PC port done right. Just wish I liked more characters, and they hadn't allowed 3-person teams (2 vs 2 feels better)

Yeah, I remember Slash/Bust (but only in 3 since I never played 4). I felt like character differences in Moons were drastic between how they played compared to Slash/Bust in 3. But it's been awhile since I can't remember how huge the differences were in SamSho3.

Edit: Yeah, if SG ever gets cheap on Steam, I might buy it and support them again. Game is good, and has a lot of nice touches. So many features that I never knew I wanted.

The MK X kold war pack thread reminds me why I don't post in general threads anymore, there's no reasoning with the pitchfork wielding masses.

Oh hey, in MvC4 news, John Vignocchi of Disney Interactive recently did an interview with Game Informer about Disney Infinity Star Wars and they asked him if Disney would license any of it's properties (i.e. Marvel) for independent games outside of the Infinity focus and he said as always if the situation makes sense they will do it.

but, as always, I know this changes nothing and we can continue perpetuating baseless assumptions about Marvel licensing

Speaking of which, I nerded out by all the stuff on the Ultrachen stream last night. I love Mike Z's ideas he's put in along with throwing FG history lessons here and there. Been labbing the game as of late on my PS3 for fun. I never played the game enough to where I'd play people, but I finally found a team I enjoyed.

Messing with Squigly/Big Band/Cerebella right now. Really excited for Ms Fortune too when console gets her.

I play that team too!

more like "lol dead game getting updates, who cares"

:p
lol
I don't think anyone would go crazy over custom assists in MVC3 mostly because that would just introduce more problems than fixes. You need a game built from the ground up and balanced from day 1 with custom assists.
I think we'd just need a game that gets regular updates and fixes. SG was most certainly not balanced from day 1 with custom assists. Just ask anyone who experienced the early hornet bomber days.

Luckily for us Capcom can totally use the novel concept of making a game that doesn't require copious usage of foreign licenses that come with all sorts of time, design and iteration based restrictions. Only more proof we should have a Capcom vs Capcom game that they can balance over five years like they did with SFIV.
Absolute guard is not needed in MVC3 (I am assuming you are talking about the unblockable protection system in Skullgirl and not the don't need to hold back on stick to keep blocking when in block stun) though push blocking to negate block stun would have some interesting applications in MVC3 to get out of some BS stuff. However, it's better to fix that BS stuff than to put in a brand new mechanic. Like for example it's better to just fix Vergil chipping you with Spiral Swords and keeping you in block stun than to have a universal mechanic to get around it because really there aren't many situations of crazy long block stuns/lock down in MVC3 aside from like 4 things.
I was talking about AG, but talking about both wouldn't be bad. Sometimes system-wide mechanic fixes really work just as well as character specific fixes and in MvC2's case something like PBGC not being universal would have literally made many characters useless against Sent/Spiral teams. SG's unblockable protection would have certainly benefited MvC3 too. That game was stuck in vanilla SG days. The only difference is that it has a bunch of Marvel characters to keep things enticing. I've experienced the high low game there and it is nuts. Luckily they took a scalpel to a bunch of the rushdown characters and gave us some real defensive options in UMvC3.
Really the main thing that would get people excited is if they fixed/reworked TACs, toned down the top tiers, buffed some low tiers with some key changes and toned down XF2/XF3 a lot of people would be very happy.
Yeah, these are particularly game-specific fixes that need to happen. We ALL know about the huge GAF made suggestions list and how much could change the game for the better, though lol. The game is far from perfect and it could use a lot of work.

Yeah, his opinions on sweep followups and the sheer amount of unscaled damage done by level 3 supers definitely caught me eye. He has talked about IAD buffers, 360 protection and PBGC for months, so it was just treading familiar and useful ground.

Twitter in full funeral-service mode with Marvel right now.

yeah I saw on Viscant's twitter. But I'm not really sure what marvel fans/players can do to bring in new people or old players back to play Marvel. It still gets a good number of entrants at some tournaments, but maybe a lot of people who have stopped playing or something just aren't interested in the type of game it is or what it has become anymore.

It's fun. Squigly was the one character I really wanted to play most, and I wanted one on point. Really works well with those two characters. Plus I love Q and Potemkin as characters, so this worked out extremely well.

Same, it was mostly that that was new to me and stood out. Comboing after sweeps did help the ground game though, imo. I could see why they made that decision since less range really hurt characters with less mobility in MvC2, but it was extremely good in 3. Also thought what he said about unfly was interesting about Marvel 2. Being a value stored for something else, now it makes sense why unfly was limited to 15 times lol

MKX has reeled itself back in compared to past costumes for a lot of its female cast.

Granted everyone is rocking triple D knockers, but at least they aren't in a string bikini in MKX like DoA gives you costume options for. Plus, I think there was a big debate a long ago in off topic GAF about underboob vs sideboob vs clevage as which is more "sexual" and the trend was that under boob was far more sexual than a woman with a big cleavage.

Either way... I'm not letting a 7 year old watch MKX either. For me though it helps me a lot that the male character's in the cast are cool looking imo. The females in MKX also wreck shit fairly hard, and so I can overlook the big hooters thing. In DoA all I really see is just Japan horniness at its finest. Makoto in BB just isn't my cup of tea.

She is Q's waifu forever though. :p

A) Even still, I feel if sexualization is the issue, no way MK gets a pass. If the issue is "how badass these characters are" then that's a totally different metric and I would be inclined to agree that MK > BB in that regard. Though I feel the female cast in most well-known fighting games have a decently high "badass" component to them be they from SF, GG, TK, SG, Marvel, etc.

B)The costumes in DOA kind of "go for broke" but at least they are optional? I will agree that the "range" of female characters in DOA game "seem" annoyingly narrow. I'm not sure MK is any less narrow but at least it doesn't have Marie Rose :p

C) With regards to sexualization, the only big fighter I can think of where that isn't an issue, assuming it is an issue for a particular consumer, is Viruta Fighter I feel but lord knows at least half this thread or more thinks all the characters in that series are boring looking so.......*shrug*

D) LOL at the bolded. That was a thing? ROFL. Feels a bit like nitpicking. I mean I don't disagree with the conclusion but I personally find it weird to be ok with one but not with the other. Everybody has their preferences and limits though.

Why do we want to put ourselves through more licensing bullshit? Capcom vs. Capcom or bust

Aww shiiiieeet patch incoming!

Honestly licensing a patch to do a new edition would be great and likely cheaper than licensing a new game.

I know there is the massive change log everyone worked on for the game but my top list would simply (before balancing characters) consist of.

  • Heroes and Heralds Local Play, Lobbies, and Player Match stuff
  • Remove TAC Infinites
  • PS3 system parity
  • -Hidden Missiles (assist): fires two fewer missiles; missiles which have not yet gained
their tracking property fail to do so if Doom gets hit (direct quote from patch log project)

Without digging deep, and rebalancing cast these are the biggest things I want in general. I want the other stuff to (as do we all) but these I want the most. The rest I am certain we ALL have our things we want specific per character. I wrote up a lot on Iron Fist...but thats literally dozens of pages of notes if we started listing all the changes wanted for every character and I wont go into all that again by posting "my guy's stuff".

Mainly these 4 things are my starting points.
Oh and include the DLC characters and costumes so they can never be lost again.

Maybe it has nothing to do with the type of the game it is, but the kind of development it's got in it's future... which is zero. I don't think it is a coincidence that some of the biggest and long lasting games are still big in tournaments thanks to yearly disc based upgrades, DLC expansions, DLC character additions and the balance fixes associated with all the aforementioned new content.

I think those things above are the difference between "dead" games and dead games if we're talking strictly modern console games.

I have to watch that bit again, but Painwheel is so scary with unfly now. Thank God Karsticles isn't into it in a serious way. I've got enough wheels of pain to deal with already.

Edit: Speaking of MvC3. I love how he decided to balance hidden missiles in SG lmao. I legit learned a lot of stuff about SG I didn't know despite spending so much time on the game (same for MvC2 and 3). It should still be an amazing assist so long as the head releasing animation and recovery are fast enough.

How much MKX DLC doesn't come with the season pass?

Can't remember if the Kold War pack was officially announced before or leaked. Who knows how much DLC is segregated.

Guys please don't take my patch talk seriously.

Like seriously... just don't.

Don't worry...I stopped taking your tech seriously awhile back. There's no way I could balance some of the things you suggested for my own stuff lol. You got some mean fucking insight though into marvel's meta, but I just had to realize that my own meta isn't trying to become that.

I still liked a LOT of the things in that patch log though and would be happy if I saw quite a few in a marvel update some day. I think a bunch of it should be done...not certain on the assist and wakeup notes though.

Do remember that MKX is published by Warner Bros. They are hands down the current worst offenders of horrible DLC practices >_> If the complete version totals out to be $150+ I won't be surprised. If you count the LE being needed for Gold Skorp it's already there pretty much.

Right now is the best time for some new blood to win EVO in Marvel. The gods have never felt weaker going into EVO IMO despite them basically winning every major tournament of the year thus far. I know this sounds weird but I feel that going into EVO a lot of specialist players are going to grind more than the gods who will be practicing for the other games. Upsets will occur.

Or maybe FChamp is just throwing everyone a curve by saying "I am totally not going to practice Marvel for EVO lulz" and then grinds it out and wins EVO again.

Looking at the SFV Bison trailer again.

I would've liked it if Bison's reflect was more like Azrael's Growler. Absorbing a projectile and gaining access to throw it whenever would be cool.

Before this trailer, I was hoping for some Alpha stuff, but all this turned out way better.

Given everything said in the last page or so about dead games just makes Melee's enduring popularity even more crazy.

Melee is a true enigma wrapped in a vortex of "I don't fucking get it man."

It is a testament to the community around it to keep it going and I'm not good with numbers, but doesn't it tie with/beat out Smash Wii U in terms of viewers/competitors? That's just ridiculous.

I just got a Wii U earlier this week. I'm gone for work and won't get to play on it till later this week, but I'm jumping into Smash Wii U as my first Smash to learn at an above average level. Their community is what is driving me to pick it up so much. The one here on GAF is fantastic as well. I don't have a local scene for melee, and it doesn't interest me like Smash Wii U's roster does, but I applaud that the game is still that strong.

Is it due to character balance? I thought in Melee that Fox/Falco win like everything or am I mistaken in that any character could win a major event ?

Maybe that's the reason some games just die out. Without a great balance people just drop it because their main can't hang and grinding seems pointless unless they pick up a pocket top tier or switch mains to a top tier.

True, but I truly have no desire to learn melee at a competitive level. I'm an "above average" player for online only, and am fine with that. No game has spoken to me enough that I want to go tournament level of grind. At this point in my life I don't think I could.

Career that has me travelling 2-3 weeks out of month away from home generally 6-8 hours away. I have a kid I'm raising, and I'm getting married too this fall. The moments I find to myself are few, and generally are in a hotel room away from home watching games moreso than playing them sadly.

Odds are if I ever go past that point it would be with Street Fighter 5 and later in its life time after my career is better established and the home life is settled a bit more, but at that point a new kid will probably be in the works/on the way, and I swore to my fiance that until a baby grows up to be at least 3 years of age I would pack up all gaming altogether so as to not have any distractions in its upbringing. I could see myself being a shit head and prioritizing "me" time over bonding time with a new born. That's just me and awareness of myself to ensure I don't fuck it up.

Forever a stream monster! :)

Uggh, been trying to hold back until E3 - but I'm just starting to think SFV looks plain whack. I may not even play it if it ends up as sluggish as it looks.

I think we'll get a demo booth/s at E3. With Sony involved they'll probably have some small tournament perhaps at their booths to draw a crowd.

Gootecks if I recall got into E3's past, and I could see him recording a lot of footage, plus I would imagine Capcom will do an official stream and record footage too.

Worst case scenario it's just cam footage people will record and upload for us to devour and read opinions from those who play it.

I have quite high hopes for SF5. Go in with low expectations though, and see what shakes out.

Skullgirls got a nesica release right? Do people play in jp? Do they upload matches from arcades?

It's not out yet iirc. I think they're waiting for the final version from what I remember, but I'm not completely sure. Netplay matches get uploaded though from the steam/ps3 release..

lol, i had a coworker who worked for a marketing firm and it was tiring. dude got a lot of travel miles so it was sweet for him but the harsh hours were too much for him. also with bonding with your newborn, just carry him/her with you while playing a handheld and divide your time up if that works lol.

fucking MK10 is about 5x snappier than SFV at this point.

think about that.

i totally agree but ill reserve my judgement until i see more characters playing.
