Final Fantasy 5 Four Job Fiesta 2014: That Classic Taste [now ending]

Finally registered for a random run with an added BERSERKER RISK to spice things up.

I'm gonna hate it ain't I?

2 Thief 2 Berserker kind of hate coming up.
I actually really want a thief because I've never gotten one. And you can get some nifty axes earlier on. I just hope I don't get 2! Or to berserkers for that matter >.>

Better add Natural to it, can't have those two berserkers getting artful dodger from those two thieves.
Oh shuuuush, berserkers can't be that bad can they?

I did two random berserker risks last year, they went fine.

Are Berserkers that bad? No. Are Thieves that bad? Not really. Would a want a team with nothing but both of them? Probably not. On Natural? Really probably not. It wouldn't be hard but it would be frustrating.

EDIT: Thief+Berserker actually works out pretty well in non natural circumstances. Artful Dodger fixes Berserkers main problem of being slow, Equip Axes solves one of Thiefs major problems of not doing enough damage and you can in fact steal a Gaia Hammer from Titan at the end of world 1 (probably with a lot of reseting, I got the chance to do it TWICE last year) and it is pretty great to have early, though more of a novelty. It does help getting a full set of Genji gear though.

Natural takes that synergy away and only leaves you with the stealing. doubling down on both of those classes would be a pain.

wait, so you have a chance to get multiples of jobs on random run mode?

Correct. You get a roll on all available jobs at the time.

So Wind Crystal is the same, 1/6 for each of the six characters. Then Water crystal adds those 5 jobs so you get a 1/11 for your second, then a 1/16, then a 1/20. In practice what Random really does is make Earth crystal jobs as rare as hen's teeth (5% chance of getting one) and makes Wind jobs incredibly common as you're guaranteed at least one and have a very high shot of getting multiple jobs from that group. Getting the same job twice is pretty rare...though it's happened to me twice now, I think.

Pretty sure 750 and no 750 also allow multiples and would have higher rates...but not as high as Classic baby.

Come to think of it that does sound about right.

Also the language in the help menu suggests only classic can have multiples outside of berserker risk shenanigans.

Doubles were pretty fun though.

EDIT: Made up my mind. 5 runs to start with using two different accounts as last year, so two runs going at once. The first one I'll talk about on this thread and start immediately when the challenge begins, playing the other one in my spare time.

1. RANDOM, NATURAL, BERSERKER RISK.
2. BERSERKER RISK

when those two are completed.

3. RANDOM
4. NORMAL

I'll switch off every crystal and then at key points during world 2 (Getting the party together, Dragon Mountain, Barrier Tower, Forest of Moore, Exdeath's Castle) and every tablet in world 3 (I pretty much always get them all)
and when one of those is done I'll do a

5.CLASSIC
run.

Aww, I just finished my playthrough only a month or so ago. I tried to keep the spirit of it intact though, and ended up having to use Blue Mage, Mystic Knight, Geomancer and Dancer. It was the first time I used a Geomancer and it was probably the last time too.

I'll pass on another run either way, but I'll keep tabs on other people's progress.

Last year's fiesta finally prompted me to play all the way through FF5. The job system's absolutely brilliant. But I reckon if I'm gonna start another SNES-era FF, I should get to finally playing the second halves of 4 and/or 6 instead. Here's to next year's Fiesta.

Is there a good guide for first time players? Not necessarily for the festa, but in general.
I want to start a casual play through on my translated SFC copy and don't want to miss anything. Breaking the game is always a plus.

A little under two weeks 'til the event starts. Has anyone started the game before hand and played their own run (that's not part of the event)? This is my first time playing FFV, I am debating if I should start my own playthrough before my #reg run, but realistically probably wouldn't finish by the 16th

I played through my run on Android up until the Wind Crystal shattered, saved and then continued onwards on a separate file to clear out all of the achievements/bestiary completion that would have annoyed me had I bypassed them during the Fiesta.

Plus, it's allowed me to get a feel for how FFV controls on a tablet and a general refresher on how certain jobs mesh together and others don't.

Also watched a guy on Twitch stream a pre-run last night to gauge his strat. He hit a roadblock fighting Byblos in the library with a Thief/Mystic Knight/Beastmaster team at a low-level and it was fun to help him work through that from the chat room.

I think I'll be giving classic a go. I'm sure I'll be just as slow this year (I preregistered and finished just before the deadline). I guess Freelancer for world 1 will be a price to pay for natural (most of the benefits have been said).
Edit: Or I could assign myself all the jobs at the wind crystal and have no freelancers...hmm

It'll be tough times if I get thief and knight as I'll have to decide if I give up the immense power of the brave blade (mine wasn't even fully powered last year) to balance out the less useful thief with the chicken knife.
I'm going to be crying in the corner as the highly unlikely (1/6)^3 chance of 3 red mages happens...

Natural built into Classic is a blessing in disguise for a party filled with thieves and white mages. Should have no trouble with Byblos and even Sol Canon should be easier.

In that case, go for Chicken Knife. Give Knight Mug and CK, and Thief Equip Swords and Excalibur.

Edit: Or remember the rules for Classic. Sorry.

I hate running so with one Thief and one Knight I'd go BB everytime. I'd advise most normal people to give the tie to Thief. Excalibur really is just good enough (with a knight in the party and any way to deliver berserk to Shinryu you can also get Ragnarok, which most classic parties should be able to do...) If I had two thieves and a knight though? I'm definitely running. Same with two of each.

Fixed the Classic/BERSERKERRISK bug. Thanks for point that out!

Only three days left for voting on The Run!
Get your votes in now and remember to donate as well to boost your votes.

More importantly though, it'd mean more adorable Berserkers getting a home instead of wandering the wilds all alone!

Too many people signing up, my dream of multiple berserkers seemingly won't come true.

Just saw the clarification on the classic run...interesting. I thought I was going to have to wait to unlock all of the jobs so that's nice. I'm feeling ambitious so I might try two runs this year. We will see.

So what you're saying is we need more donations. :P

I should be in position to donate sometime this year myself, thanks for reminding me. Not at lot but every little bit helps.

EDIT: Just noticed the teams right now. People are being jerks and have easily picked the two worst teams possible using different classes for each job.

EDIT EDIT: Actually if both Berserker and then Red Mage tie then they'd get the better jobs by default.

Depending on where I'm at till June 16 with the games I'm currently playing, I might participate. Haven't played FF5 before (only got the GBA version a few weeks ago, from a GAFfer no less!), but this sounds like a fun way to do it.

Based on the established ruleset, that's almost guaranteed to happen.

Don't see Red Mage closing the 32-vote gap needed to catch Puwexil's Berserker.
He's likely going to wind up with Time Mage from the Water Crystal while Dragondarch lands Mystic Knight.

Any thoughts on how well these teams will synergize?

Puwexil - Thief / Time Mage / Geomancer / Dragoon
Dragondarch - Monk / Mystic Knight / Beastmaster / Dancer

I have no self control and I already started a normal run and I'm already beat the library.

Playing this mixing jobs feels so weird.

Has Time Mage, blows through the game, does not have to worry about walking back through dungeons.

Has Mystic Knight, blows through game, clowns Exdeath with Aegis Shield Ribbon wearing solo MK.

Oh real opinions? Team one doesn't have a ton of it besides TM being a great team player. Gaia gives TM a reliable source of damage until comet shows up besides busting rods, Dragoon gives Dragon Sword to the Time Mage for MP regen. Dragoon gets extra speed from the thief...and thief can equip lances or cast more Time magic. Pretty simple.

That second party, well. Ribbons or Pokémon Canon for the final fight. Counter for the Mystic Knight. Barefisted for damage. Maybe 30% HP for Dancer at the end.

A dancer with +30% HP can go surprisingly far. If you get lucky (and you have Hermes sandles) you can avoid Almagest altogether. The party is likely to have a lot of issues with Exdeath 1, though. That's been the hardest fight in the game for me several times now.

How exactly is Exdeath 1 going to kill the MK before the Meteo spam? MK is up there with Samurai as the easiest class to take into the Exdeath fight and come out ahead.

is there a "preferred" version?
I know I have the PSone classic version on PSN already bought from a while ago, but from what I remember it felt really slow...don't know if it's because it lags on the vita or what not

No, it's just slow. GBA is the best version if you can, iOS is good if you can't get that.

Too many people signing up, my dream of multiple berserkers seemingly won't come true.
I feel like the last couple years we had roughly a 1:1 on the Risk. So perhaps more people are signing up for it this year? Or are early donations coming slower...?
So what you're saying is we need more donations. :P
Yes, please!
Donations seemed to pick up right when RK started his run.
Ah, I know I wasn't paying too much attention to exactly when each chunk came in. Just seemed like more people would have wanted their donations to count toward the job selection of The Run.
And I consulted with ye olde infopictures of justice, we are almost tied with the number of Riskers as we had last year! (I was shocked to see we only had 90 the first year.)

Red Mage is only ten votes away from Berserker in the votes for Puwexil's jobs. Why are people choosing the dullest jobs?

It seems most people are bent on trying to give them the worst possible teams under the constraints of no duplicates between the teams.

The two worst jobs per crystal are:
Thief, Monk
Red Mage*, Berserker
Geomancer, Beastmaster**
Dancer, Dragoon

* Red Mage is only "bad" when not paired with White or Black Mages.
** Beastmaster isn't really bad at all, but can be extra frustrating when paired with a Berserker.

Beastmaster can be pretty good but when you compare it to the broken Ninja or Bard, and the versatile and easy to use Ranger it feels a bit underwhelming. I discovered the other day that he can capture a Crystelle and use Mighty Guard but I don't know how it can be done when it only has 3 HP and there's no access to % based attacks.

Dancers and Dragoons are also pretty good, it's just that Samurai and Chemists are better.

I like all of the jobs in this game but I can tell you from multiple fiesta runs with Beastmaster+Berserker that pairing the two does severely hamper the Beastmaster to the point where killing off the Berserker is a good option a lot of the time. Even small perks like owning the crap out of a Shield Dragon lose their power when Berserker is always hitting them out of it. Can't release 4 Yellow Dragons on Exdeath, have to use three instead. Catching certain monsters becomes a pain when Berserkers kill them for you. Oh sure, there are ways around it (leaving them KOed, Blind, deequipping them and putting them in the back row, giving them the starting knife, etc, etc.) but it's annoying. Bard/Ninja/Ranger just don't give a damn about that stuff (Though bard has some times when killing the Berserker is also a good idea.)

The next time Gilgabot gives me a Red Mage I'll remember what you said about how the Berserker wants to actively screw your strategy and be thankful that I didn't get one.

Red Mage is getting closer one vote at a time. I'm scared.

Yeah... but then, what if I want to vote for something else but don't want to totally unbalance the two teams?

One of the most interesting ways to have a vote count, even a smallish one and to change up the status quo is to...maintain the status quo on the Water Crystal Job!

Sounds weird but its true; if they tie on a class it moves onto the next leading vote getter...unless that is a tie, which would force that choice out to the next spot. So if you really want a change the easiest way to do it is to keep Berserker at number 1 for both of them and Red Mage at number two, which would give them Time Mage and Mystic Knight, two very good classes that are roughly on par with one another.

I've had 5 or 6 Beastmasters and at least that many Berserkers. I've had both...4 times, including the first two years back to back. I've learned to cope.

I've managed to finish easily enough each year, I'd just like to get some variety. I've only gotten 7 out of 20 classes. White Mage/Summoner/Ranger/Samurai, go!

Edit: Decided to play up until getting the Wind crystal. Having to use my GBA since I gave my cousin's little boy my DS. I can't deal with this dark screen; gonna have to find another DS lite.
