Final Fantasy VII PS4 |OT| One last time before the remake

People playing this the first time - how do you feel about the level geometry? Do you find it easy to figure out where to go on sections like the area that goes to the market and Don Corneo's area or climbing the rope in Midgar? Because even as someone who has played this before its really hard to determine whats the foreground and background sometimes.

I remember when I first played the game years ago. Finding the rope in Don Cornero's area took me forever.

Yeah it's kinda annoying :\ Hard to tell what something leads to. Sometimes it's just flat out impossible to tell unless you happen to walk into it and discover it leads to something. I feel that it's fine for the most part even if there are moments where I'm lost

Took me 1 day to figure out that when I was 10

I remember it took me hours to figure out how to get to Aerith's house. Didnt realize you could walk off from that side of screen to a new area.

This screen was the bane of my existence when I first played the game a couple years ago. I was stuck for a good 20 minutes. That purple beam toward the end just did not click in my brain.

The depth is sometimes not accurately shown on some maps which makes it difficult to judge.

As for entrances and exits, there is a button that will reveal icons for those spots. You only need to look at those. (The track pad on PS4)

Yeah this is the screen I had in mind, I constantly hear people that are first time playing the game now get stuck here.

Which makes sense, something about it coming from a modern perspective just doesn't mesh. Some of the early 3D stuff is messy.

So I made a thread of me just getting this game again but got shut down quite quick.

So I'll just post what my main thread post was.

So I just downloaded the original game on PS4 and I'm about 3-4 hours into it. Besides the obvious polygons.. This game still seriously holds up. I started playing this game when I was 14 (2 years after it came out). I got to the end boss but never finished it.

I just got to the Shinra building (on the first disc). I know what's coming and I know how much is left of the game.. I am so excited to get through this game again. I am literally having nostalgia x100. I'm loving the sound and story all over again.

Mind you while the control stick seems kinds messes up.. If you hold the O button while doing fixes the problem.

But overall.. This game.. This fucking game. The story is amazing.. I miss timed RPGs and the whole set up of the gear, Materia, and limit break. It's perfect.

I'm addicted again.

Disregarding the obvious absence of the vocals in "One Winged Angel", I still contend the PC MIDI OST played on one of the higher end MIDI modules of the day is better than the PS1 version.

I really think the samples in FFVII are a step below the samples used in FFVI or even many SNES games (and for some reason the entire FFVII OST lacks low-end completely, something the SNES had no issue with - on games scored by Uematsu or even Koshiro), I don't know if that was a stylistic choice or Uematsu just coming to terms with new hardware.

These actually sound really cool. Its different of course and not the original but damn. Not as bad as i was lead to believe.

Oh, come on! This is borderline NSFL. :P

Back in the day, I didn't have a memory card, and for a few days my entire FFVII experience constituted thoroughly exploring everything up until that screen again and again. I had no idea what I was supposed to do, what I was missing. I was so appreciative when a friend pointed me in the right direction, suggesting I go up the long board thing. That was a great moment.

To this day, the screen following that one feels sacred to me. I'll forever remember getting to that park as being this incredible achievement.

My OCD dictates that I chime in - Uematsu (and Japanese composers outside of the occasional rare case) rarely implement their own compositions. That's the job of what they call the Synthesizer Operator, a term which still persists till today although in a slightly different context.

i'm just before the final boss and i'm missing the lv 99 trophy and the gil trophy, and I've done every side quest, got every ultimate weapon and so on. Best game of 2015 for me. Didn't remember how good it actually still is.

lol too bad it's essentially one of the most spoiled deaths in fiction. Had virtually no impact since I never used her :p

And with that disc 1 draws to a close

I think we pretty much know how SE is gonna divide the game. Its probably gonna be pretty close to original's divisions give or take.

This looks gorgeous. This game looks timeless to my eyes.Probably looks perfect on a Vita.

The polygonal models look really clean too. They come off as an art style today(yeah they were probably a result of limitations in their day)

Yeah it does look nice. That's one think I'm worried about with the remake. That it might lose some of its charm. For example, I personally think the character model mods out there on pc look really bad.

man sometimes i forget how big this game is, so many little mini-games and such. feels like it's still unrivaled at that. up to mt. corel myself haha taking my time, maybe 12-13 hours in. yuffie before junon took me like 30-35 battles ;p

So much this. I had both versions when they got released and, provided you had a good soundcard, the PC version has always sounded better to me.

I find some complains about the PC music either being misinformed (not listening them with a good card) or just plain nostalgia for the PSX music.

So obviously there's been plenty of posts lamenting the fact that the music resets after every battle, but has anyone else with a good memory of the original game noticed the way the music cuts oddly in certain parts, or sometimes plays different music altogether? Like parts where the music is supposed to just start or stop abruptly it will instead do a long fade in or fade out. Ruins some scenes for me.

I just bought this on an impulse and just wow the music and watching the exp screen after battles.. I missed this game more than I realized. I can't believe how excited I am to trek through this again (will only be 3rd time). I'm enjoying the combat and know there's always a place in my heart for turn based RPGs. Game is really holding up well.

Quick question though, and I'm sure it's been addressed many times here.. Do any of the perks like no encounter or max health/limit have any bearing on getting trophys? And if I used max health to grind can I turn it back off anytime and go back to my normal stats? Thanks, just trying to speed things up when I need to.

You can and they don't affect trophies.

I was thinking about getting this version but then decided to just buy the PSOne classic for my vita for convenience. Sure wish I had gotten that theme, though...

You do know that if you press the touchscreen it places little arrows over any place you can enter, right? I remember this been invaluable back in the day.

I know In the psx version you could hit the select key and it would put pointers over you and the entrances / exits of maps. It still doesn't help with some areas with weird geometry but it can help with knowing where some exits are

i think it's a bad idea to end in the end of midgard arc, you can finish this arc in 3-5 hours, its a smal portion of the game, the part 2 and 3 would be gigantic in comparison

Really? So sort of like how film composers do not do their own orchestrations? I'm always amazed at how under the radar the orchestration/arrangement process is, particularly in film since a great deal of the "feel" of a film score comes from the arrangement of what the composer basically wrote as a piano piece.

In any event, I could have sworn yeeears ago I read an interview with Uematsu where he talked about moving from SNES to PS1 and the challenges it posed - I have no idea where that would have been though.

Still, regardless of who did it, and regardless of whether the PS1 sound chip was more capable, I always felt the "synthesizations" of the FF scores on PS1 were not as well done as the SNES entries in the series. Obviously, it wasn't the hardware though, because Mitsuda's compositions absolutely soar on the PS1 and are just much more dense and more full sounding.

And platinum get. 21 hours it took me overall. The longest part was getting people to 99. I had mastered enough All materia by the time I was in the mid 60's, so afterwards put on a random podcast and finished that off before the end.

3X speed is an absolute god send. Playing FFVIII and FFIX now will be nigh impossible.

does anyone else feel like this game would look way better, and more importantly more cohesive, if instead of scaling up the backgrounds and blurring them and then putting 1080p rendered polygons on top, they didn't apply any blurring to the backgrounds, scaled them to half of 1080p(960x540) and then natively rendered the polygons at 960x540 as well. they wouldn't clash as much with the backgrounds.

Hi guys, I have an itch to play FFVII again after the Remake Trailer but I'm not sure which platform to go with and I have a ton of options.

Of my two main options, I'm not sure whether to buy the PS4 version or the Steam version. I've been more of a PC guy lately and heard the PS4 version has a bug with the World Map music looping and i've seen some YouTube videos and it looks like the models have been cleaned up to 1080p resolution which looks nicer to me than what i'm used to, but does that apply to the Vanilla Steam version as well or did it look worse than this release? Never played it. I know I could just install some graphics mods, but not only would that be a hassle for me going through all the different mods but i'd rather play the game with it's original visual identity (at high-res) rather than all these realistic fanmade mods that clash with the other graphics.

The other option would be to play the PS1 version how I did last time say 4 or 5 years ago where I used the original discs with the Epsxe Emulator and a plugin that cleaned up the character models to high-res. Again, I'm not sure how that compares to the Steam release or the port of it to PS4 which i've never toiched before. I could also buy the ios version as I love the idea of playing FFVII on the go and on a smaller screen, but i've heard bad things about it and assume it's nowhere near the quality of the PS4 or Steam releases. I could also play it on Vita but unfortunately I was stupid and bought the PAL version on the EU PS store and i've heard that is a less than ideal way to reexperience PS1 games.

I know regardless of what I play it on there won't be some massive difference, but especially if i'm gonna rebuy it I want to go with whatever the most ideal version of FFVII is right now with it's vanilla graphics. Could anyone that has played the game with more than one of these methods help me out?

Just get the PS4 version. It looks really nice and the 3X speed, skip random encounters, and insta-Limit Break and max HP/MP upon a click of a button is pretty great if this isn't your first rodeo with the game.

Getting HUGE flashbacks to playing this back in 1997. I might even download a few old mags from Retromags to fully bask in the nostalgia. I distinctly recall wearing the ink out of this issue around the time of FF7:

Same here man, the problem is that beam looks like its coming off of the wreckage, not from the street level but the level above, I remember the exact same issue.
