hahaha! just discovered "Original Graphics Mode" turns off anti-aliasing. All the 3D models are as chunky and blocky as it was on the PS1

i am actually loving it for some strange reason

Probably blends better with the backgrounds.

Hehe logged into my SE account from my PC purchase last year and got nearly all the achievements as I start the game.

Now to defeat the weapons and some random limit breaks!

Does anyone actually feel this way?

The PS1 version came out in 1997.

At a certain point, don't you lose the spoiler protection?

This was "snape kills dumbledore" before "snape kills dumbledore"

but I won't bring it up. Plus, if someone gets caught by surprise and writes a really long, emotional, overwrought post about it, that'll be really funny and a taste of schadenfreude that I haven't had since 1997

So are there any decent graphic mods? Looks pretty crappy.

I don't know. I read most of them are incompatible with the 2012 version and that you have to install the older '98 version to get them working.

Are there any mods that are confirmed to be working with the Steam version?

Well I caved and got it :) Kinda sucks that it has the SE account login stuff, but at least it doesn't feel so intrusive. It just pops up, lets you alter your settings and saves your progress to the cloud, which is nice.

$16 AUD is too pricey IMO, so I'm glad I got an american friend to gift it to me instead.

Keyboard controls are relatively simple to get used to, for those who don't own a controller. I could easily play either way, but seeing as I have a controller I guess I'll just use it :)

You can turn off the cloud saves so you'e not required to always be online

Hey, just for the heck of it, if you're like me and bought the SE Store version and are steamed (haha) that they refuse to give out equivalent Steam keys as of now, they seem to be listening to comments directed at their blog post of the news: Final Fantasy VII launches on Steam

Their excuse so far:

Hi folks, I've passed on your messages regarding Steam keys, but unfortunately it's not possible to give out keys to those who have already bought another version of the game. I understand that's not ideal for folks wanting to use Steam to launch the Square Enix Store version, so sorry about that.

Also, for those concerned about not being able to re-download the game if you bought it on the Square Enix Store previously - you should actually be able to download it whenever you need to. There was an issue with purchases from the North American store, but that's something that's being/has been fixed.

If I can get a key for Xenonauts and a billion other indie games, this is some straight up horseshit.

The reason why SE still haven't done a legitimate VII remake is because they know theycan yank us around with stuff like this.
I think it's a Half Life 3 situation. Fan expectations are sky high and they are probably afraid of the reaction.

Which makes Ocarina of Time kind of odd. One of Nintendo's biggest games and they remake it on a portable. Still, it was a fantastic remake that did justice to the source material.

Square should do something similar, if they have the source for the backgrounds they could do like they did with Flying Fairy and use the high res assets and paint them on a polygonal background and give me a 3DS remake.

So this SE account is the same as the one I have in order to be playing FFXIV, right? Just checking if it's a new account I'd have to make (wouldn't buy if so).

Bought this after reading an article about mods for the PC version...

Little bit annoyed now to find out that they don't seem to be compatible.

I'm pretty sure even people that have never played FF7 have heard of "that" spoiler

why be a dick about it? just use spoiler tags if you think you're in a thread where the majority of people haven't seen what you're spoiling. For FF7, that's only like one thread. Just control yourself.

Valve supplies a virtually unlimited amount of keys to developers/publishers for free. So yeah, it's a cash grab.

The game is over 15 years old, you don't need to use spoiler tags when discussing the story. That's silly.

Yes you do, people are reading this that still haven't played the game. Including the OP.
Why would you want to spoil them the story?

It's no different than spoiling something for a recently released game, you're negatively affecting somebody.

Games do not have an expiration date, spoilers are the same.

Do you really believe that someone should be punished for not playing the game back then?
Why should these people's experience be further diminished because they didn't have a chance to play the game when it was released for whatever reason?

Agreed, but it's likely they no longer have the original background renders. Reading up on how much material gets thrown out after development, I'd be interested in seeing just how many of the original assets are still available. Even if they did reuse the backgrounds, what resolution were they rendered in?

I still remember how Square spoiled the fate of you know who in their commercial for the game before it even came out. It was shown, and pretty much stated.

If you haven't played a game that came out 15 years ago, then the burden is on you to avoid spoilers. Expecting people to spoiler tag discussions of something that old is unreasonable. Do I need to spoiler tag that in Star Wars
Darth Vader is Luke's father
as well? These things have a statute of limitations and this one has certainly passed.

For what it's worth, there are many people that have yet to play the game, and while they may have come across spoilers over the years, they are unlikely to remember them if they had no interest in the game at the time.

'That' particular spoiler has an impact on the way people may actually play the game.

Explanation as to why it is important - (contains the actual spoiler)
People who would have used that character in their party will/may no longer do so

Is it really that hard to use spoiler tags? Since it's on a new platform with people who might not ever played the game before I don't think it's too much to ask to not spoil a big twist in the game. FF7 isn't as pop culture as many would like to believe so there's a very good chance most people don't know what happens, why spoil the fun for them?

Wait, what? He was his father?!? YOU RUINED IT!!! I was just about to watch it for the first time even though I'm 30 years old and have had my entire life to see it. But you ruined it!

No, no you didn't.

Perhaps we should also spoiler that
Mario saves Princess at the end of Super Mario Brothers?

Exactly. There comes a time after something is released where it becomes ok to have open discussion about it. This game certainly meets that criteria. If someone wants to play it still without seeing such discussion, the burden is absolutely on them.

Since it's on a new platform

This isn't a release on a new platform either, this is the PC release that has existed for 15 years now as well. It's just another service distributing it.

Does this version have the exact same music(with Yamaha option) as the old 4 CDs PC version from waaaay back then?

I don't care if this music is considered shit by fans of the PS1 version, its what im used to, and its what im nostalgic to dammit. :(

Why should spoilers have an expiration date?

There's undoubtedly people on this board who were toddlers when Final Fantasy 7 came out, and hiding your spoilers takes very little effort.

Then they should avoid game forums. Should we also spoiler the winner of a Super Bowl from 1995? Perhaps we should spoiler that Link faces Gannon in the Legend of Zelda or that Freddy doesn't actually die at the end of Nightmare on Elm Street. Perhaps we should spoiler everything and anything? It's been 15 years. If someone wants to play it without being spoilered then get off the internet.

Because after a certain point the burden moves to those who haven't experienced it yet, and not with those who have already. 15 years later it becomes up to the other people to avoid spoilers for something, expecting people to be mindful of spoilers at that point is simply unreasonable.

I'm so glad people seem to get this for the most part.

This is a fucking terrible opinion to hold. For the sake of typing a handful of extra letters in your post, other people should leave the internet?

It is unbelievably lazy and disrespectful.

If they don't want to be spoiled on a 15 year old game? Yes. It isn't everybody elses responsibility to protect a few from being spoiled for a PS1 game that came out 15 years ago. Sorry.

No one is saying to spoiler tag the internet. This thread is specifically about FF7 being newly released on Steam which will surely include brand new players to the game. I don't think it's that absurd to think maybe spoiler tags would be appropriate in this specific thread.

It's not a responsibility, it is a basic courtesy. One that takes very, very little effort on your part.

And you think people should leave the internet, so you don't need to type some letters?
That speaks volumes.

Anyway, i'm 99.9% sure that any gamers who browse the internet(which is like, everyone of them) have already been spoiled about Aerys/Aerith. She's like the "Luke, i'm your father" of the gaming side. A big spoiler that everyone, even people who haven't seen it, knows about.

Nobody is banning them from the internet. They are saying if they want to play a 15 year old game unspoiled, then perhaps avoid threads on a gaming forum about that game. Expecting us all to cater to them in bogus. The burden falls on them to avoid spoilers at that point.

You should have spoilered that apparently.

Yep. They can't even realize that all people wanted was for people to not post spoilers in this thread.

Those two seem like the type that will argue over anything just to rustle some jimmies.

Young people should avoid game forums? That's ridiculous, and so are all your comparisons. The 1995 Super Bowl is in no way like a classic video game that finds new players every generation. Gannon is set up as the villain at the beginning of Zelda games. And it's obvious that Freddy doesn't die in Nightmare on Elm Street because he appeared in innumerable sequels.

Who cares if it's been 15 years? Some people here, I'm sure, couldn't help that they were three years old fifteen years ago. Why spoil a classic game's major plot turns for them when it takes so little effort to avoid it? The effort is minimal and the failure to exert this minimal effort is extremely harmful. It's just not reasonable.

And the Star Wars example is dumb. It's unfortunate that a spoiler has become a part of pop culture, but it has. Final Fantasy 7 is not Star Wars.

And the effort for them to avoid spoilers would be minimal as well, and after 15 years, that is where the burden falls. I won't go out of my way to spoil anything for anyone, but if a discussion comes up in a thread about a 15 year old game and the thread isn't clearly marked as spoiler free, I'm going to feel free to discuss plot elements openly without worry.

And the Star Wars example is dumb. It's unfortunate that a spoiler has become a part of pop culture, but it has. Final Fantasy 7 is not Star Wars.

There's nothing dumb about it. At a certain point you are making open discussion a pain in the ass for the sake of a fear you might spoil something, anything, for a few people.

Do we not usually state spoilers in threads for new releases on this board? Threads that contain spoilers for a newly released game, should be marked as such, and to my knowledge are.

The game is old, yes. This version of the game is not. There are people (many of them sadly) that would not play old games without achievements, and so this is the first chance for them to do so on steam.

There are people on my Facebook right now, asking if it is worth the price, and if it is a good game. I think it fair to assume they have never played it, and know little about it.

It is just a basic courtesy, that's all. It takes such little effort, that it seems crazy to just shrug and say fuck them, its old anyway.

Yes, they should avoid forums if they want to play a 15 year old game without being spoilered. And no, this isn't a new release. The PC version is almost 15 years old too. It's simply being released on Steam. The game was available on the PS1, PC, PSP, PS3, PSVita.

There are countless games I havent played or finished from the PS1 including MGS, FF8-9, etc. i would never expect others to spoiler something from that year. If I am SO bothered by being spoiled then I will simply not go into threads or read articles that deal with those games.

The point isnt about it taking only a few seconds to do a spoiler, it's about folks actually getting upset and offended at those who don't spoiler.

If they want to play a 15 year old game spoiler free, the burden is on them. If you went to their Facebook post and spoiled it in the comments, that'd be wrong. Discussing it on a forum like this though is a non-issue.
