Final Fantasy VII Remake is a multi-part series

Yeah, you know me. I'm usually a very positive person.

But episodic content really grinds my gears. And combining it with my favorite FF ever... Well... Not a good mix.

Well for the record I totally agree. I was just praising them too.... I can only hope the episodes will work like the discs, so they can isolate a lot of the story and end with the open world to roam..... Definitely feels like wishful thinking atm.

Think of how many completely unique areas FF7 had. You had a reactor, cyber punk downtown area, a church, a theme park, a slum, a multi-level corporate building, a canyon village, and way more, all of which were enterable and explorable.

You can't compare it to Witcher 3, Elder Scrolls V, or GTA V, all of which have at most 5 different types of environments, with lots of reused assets. GTA has a fair amount of unique buildings, but you can't enter most of them. All three games have more cohesive worlds than FF7.

Doing FF7 in full 3D with state of the art graphics is a mammoth undertaking with no precedent.

Yeah, this is what I was thinking too. Just environment wise there is so much in FF7, and putting all of it with the graphical level they're going for would be an insane undertaking for one game. I like episodic games too so I'm okay with this.

You're assuming the game will completely remake each area. Its easy to condense the shinra building section into a few cutscenes.

Let's not kid ourselves, FFVII is MASSIVE. They are probably doing this so they even have a chance to get it released.

Oh, no doubt this was the only pitch that could get the game made. There's no going back from this. It's episodic or bust.

Well, you should really abandon the word "episodic", nowhere does SQEX say this is episodic. To me, it seems more like this will just be such a huge project that they'll divide the game into a trilogy or something where each part is still a pretty big JRPG, just not the whole story of FFVII in one. Not that each part is some hyper-linear corridor like FFXIII or episodic linear story & battle segment that has no room for actual exploration.
I just feel it's gonna be padded to heck with crap.

They original has a great length.

Is there a way I can positively spin this? Im just not ready to be pissed about the game I've always dreamed would come out.
Literally all we know is 'The game you thought was one game is actually more than one game'. If you can't think of a single positive version of that statement, you just lack imagination.

I mean, I guess many of us did say we'd pay a high price for the remake.

I'm cautiously optimistic because they could split it up and add extra side stories and have logical end points between episodes. If the content is there, it won't be so bad.

Also need to release each episode annually at the longest.

Just as I start calming down, I read the thread title of the other thread, or I read someone speculate how the game will be divided and I instantly go into overdrive again.

How the fuck am I even supposed to sleep today? Headbutting a stone brick and passing out seems to be the only way out of this shitfest.
Quit freaking the fuck out before we have more details?

Good lord people they're video games. And this isn't even 100% bad news: it's just news.

Quit it, you're being far too reasonable.

didnt they say when the original came out that some stuff had to be cut cause the tech just wasnt as good as it is now
maybe theyll add the stuff they wanted to add originally

Ugh, probably just falling prey to the prevailing doom and gloom, but if this ends up being: some nice moments from FF7, a cinematic sampler with intermittent non-continuous gameplay, I will be very grumpy indeed.

I hope in time I can go back and have a laugh at this topic, but I have already done a 180 on this project, and if it's true that it's going to be episodic pish, then I'm doing another 180.

Square Enix, you had one job: Remake a video game people liked. Now you're going to split it into multiple parts for some inane reason.

I honestly hope SE can prove me wrong about this, but it already sounds like they are fucking up the one thing people wanted for years.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
What's the consumer advantage to this?

You get a worse game faster?
Yes and you get to take a shit while loading each episode

Hell yes

No goddamn way they could cover all of FF7 in a single game

This is a great decision
Well...they could. But they're choosing not to. It isn't a great or a bad decision until we see what fuckery comes about because of it, such as these "unique experiences". I personally have bad memories of Final Fantasy IV's sequel being split into episodes and how god awful that experience was.

Anybody defending this decision is such a corporate suckup. This is really, really cynical.
Maybe some of us realize that investing such intense emotion into the fate of a video game doesnt make much sense, and that we'd rather just play and enjoy what we do get? Its pretty simple. Im simply happy to be able to play the damned remake to begin with. Also i believe in artistic integrity. First experience it and then you can complain all you want later.

If we could just get an explanation... what is with devs saying these kinds of things without further explanation? Is it just to create more attention even if that attention is a mass of speculation, fear, and as with everything, insane amounts of salt?

My god. We have literally no details other than those tweets. How about we wait to hear from someone at the company what the plan is. The knee jerk outrage on this forum is pure insanity sometimes.

Yes.

This.
It's amazing that people are okay with this.
People wouldn't be okay with THAT, but THAT is not necessarily what this is. This isn't necessarily episodic like Telltale's Walking Dead is episodic. This could be FFVII divided into a trilogy where each part is still a big JRPG of its own that takes quite long to finish with freedom for exploration, side-quests, overworld areas to adventure through etc.

Hmmm...waiting out the PS4 timed exclusivity will be easier now for those that want it on PC/XBOne/NX/Wherever it might go. Not sure I'd want to play, say, Disc 1 of FFVII, wait one to two years and play Disc 2, and then wait another one to two and finally Disc 3. But who knows, maybe it'll be too good to wait on...

Personally, I'm dubious about it anyway (mostly about the battle system, the artistic direction in the last trailer seemed truer to OG FFVII than I was expecting), but I hope this doesn't mean the game is cut up into linear, stylish-corridor-running chunks. I'd also rather not pay $120+ just to play it...

I still want to want it.

Nooooo!

@rasedisa: @mochi_wsj If that's correct, then why not do it like the original and include 2 discs once it releases?
@mochi_wsj: @rasedisa I asked, and they said: "to maximize great machine capacity of PS4"

@mochi_wsj: @Senigata03 my guess is the scenario will be split into several which we would need to buy each time. similar to one of those iPhone games?

It's actually impressive because the overreactions in this thread are getting crazier by the second.

Like, I understand the issue.

But on one hand people are complaining the all the episodes will be released by 2020 and on the other hand they expected a full release of the game any time before then.

It seems like most people don't quite understand game development.

And like I said. They have FFXV and KH3. They may just want this game out in a timely manner. Again it all depends on how they plan on delivering this game.

But we need to wait for more news.

¯_(ツ)_/¯

Maybe if it's episodic I'll be more likely to have the time to finish each episode, and thus complete it. I can't find time to put 30+ hours into a single player game over a weekend anymore.

That's just me though. Resume being pissed, people.

Welcome to every thread on Gaming side for every FF title ever.

The fact that it would be nearly impossible to recreate every single environment or event in one $60 FF7 game this day in age.

Play through it recently and realize that all of that would be played through as a third-person explorable town with drastically different environments that change assets completely.

Assuming you split this in two, just throwing that out there, you get more focus on that content as making the game more content focused and the added scenes will make it so that the game is roughly split in half as an entirely complete-able and lengthy RPG.

There is absolutely no way they could remake all of FF7 Remake as a copy without glossing over a majority of the details and more.

That's one "possibility" of many that we won't know until presumably Jump Festa in less than 2 weeks from today.

I will wait and see what the actual plan for each episodes entails before being concerned tbh For all we know, the full game may release as one 'episode', and new 'storyline' episodes adding to the core game coming separately. I suppose it depends how much they intend to address or add the expanded storylines from DoC and CC into the main game.

It sounds more like Starcraft 2 where it's going to be multiple large-ish sized digital/physical releases.

Yeah, that's what I'm guessing. Which is fine, as long as the story is paced well and each release has as much content as your average full-priced game. SC2 delivered on that pretty well.

predictions:

-the complete package will still be on a far smaller scope than the original ff7
-each episode will vary in quality and will be farmed out to various teams
-optional side quests and exploration will be close to non-existent
-no overworld or transition between the locations of each episode
-there will be no finite number of episodes, with various side stories or EU filler being brought in if sales are good
-if sales are bad, the story will be massively abridged with production values significantly dropping
-character progression will only exist on a micro scale, with each episode effectively being mechanically standalone
-the first episode will leave an optimism that the rest will sorely fail to live up to

I would absolutely bet on at least half of this. The "each episode effectively being mechanically standalone" is the worst part to me and what I immediately thought when I read the wording of what they were saying.

There is nothing I'd love more than to be wrong. But, I think when every episode is released, it will still not be what we had thought/hoped it was.
