Final Fantasy VII Remake is a multi-part series

3 possible scenarios I can see:

1) Episodic in nature for faster dev time or to attempt a more serialized style of game while retaining the story or to get more money in the long run because its fucking FF7 and people will buy

2) They change the story to make it a duology/trilogy so they can get more money in the long run because its fucking ff7 and people will buy

3) They keep the same story but add new content as prequels/sequels so they can get more money in the long run because its fucking ff7 and people will buy

Interesting to see what they'll do and how they'll pull it off. I see episodic titles getting bigger and bigger and its not like Square isn't already experimenting this with the new HItman.

I see 2 and to a greater extent, 3, being pretty likely

Quit freaking the fuck out before we have more details?

Good lord people they're video games. And this isn't even 100% bad news: it's just news.
Clearly you have no idea what the fuck you're talking about if you're even remotely considering this as "just news".

Literally all we know is 'The game you thought was one game is actually more than one game'. If you can't think of a single positive version of that statement, you just lack imagination.
Im just hoping that its because the game is so huge that they have to release it in a few different parts. I could live with that for sure. Its the "each is a different experience" part that makes me worried. What does that mean? Im a little taken back but I'm not going to react until I know what exactly is going on. I just pray they dont massively fuck this up.

@mochi_wsj: @Senigata03 my guess is the scenario will be split into several which we would need to buy each time. similar to one of those iPhone games?

He has a direct line of communication with them and speaks their language and he can't even figure out what the hell they're saying.

Welp. Crap. Wish they wouldn't force themselves to put something out for 2017. It's a self-imposed rush. Forget the anniversary and make a long rich single experience. Probably gonna have bad pop songs be the selling focus for each chapter. Everything except the meaty source material. Have to remind myself Square went pop long ago and that will be the new paint. We'll see if nostalgia can win out.

Think of how many completely unique areas FF7 had. You had a reactor, cyber punk downtown area, a church, a theme park, a slum, a multi-level corporate building, a canyon village, and way more, all of which were enterable and explorable.

You can't compare it to Witcher 3, Elder Scrolls V, or GTA V, all of which have at most 5 different types of environments, with lots of reused assets. GTA has a fair amount of unique buildings, but you can't enter most of them. All three games have more cohesive worlds than FF7.

Doing FF7 in full 3D with state of the art graphics is a mammoth undertaking with no precedent.

You also have Nibelheim, Wutai, Gold Saucer, Various Forests, Forgotten City and the list goes on and on.

Cannot be stated enough.

Honestly not shocked. A straight up faithful VII remake would be too good and make way too much sense for modern day Squenix. Even if the episodic aspect turns out fine, they'll find some other way to fuck it up. They've been ruining the Final Fantasy brand for over half a decade at this point.

"Isn't this FF7 game too big for a CD-R?"

Two blu ray discs in the same package. There's seriously no excuse.

"There's no goddamn way they could cover all of The Witcher 3/Tales of [name]/Dragon Quest 8 in one game."

They're not really comparable, lol

I mean FF7's scope is super massive

There are so many setpieces

I imagine they will do something once they wake up.

My guess: "please, it's not what you think, we love our fans and we listen to everyone, [insert vague PR backtracking which seems to be targeted to fans but is actually targeted to panicking stockholders]"

You gotta be kidding me, just put it on 2 discs.
It's not the data, it's that they're releasing the parts separately so they can release separate games.

This gives them time to release things earlier and work on the rest of the installments concurrently.

It also maximizes profits.

Feels like this game won't be finished. Or the remake will cut tonnes of content. The worst thing to consider is that episodes are broken up over console generations. Imagine some on PS4 then others on PS5.

So, Square being Square?

Xenosaga... worked? Actually rather underrated, but 150 hours is a lot to ask of a player, and FFVII isn't big enough to be pulled out that much.

Need more details, but pessimistic. Damn, and right when I was about to give Square credit for, well, anything again. I know it might get us to the game faster but you'd need to do a lot of convincing to get me to think it wasn't for cash raking purposes as well.

If we could just get an explanation... what is with devs saying these kinds of things without further explanation? Is it just to create more attention even if that attention is a mass of speculation, fear, and as with everything, insane amounts of salt?
It seems like this info leaked out before they anticipated, and people are jumping to the worst possible conclusion as a result.

Still, I hope SE's PR team is currently reading this thread and is prepping one hell of a fire eqstigiusher for the morning.

I feared that open world exploration would be gone and this just convinces me further. Going through the trailer again, we are probably getting better town exploration and NPC interaction. Expecting lengthy episodes. New scenes, battles, maybe several optional missions per town.

Maybe some of us realize that investing such intense emotion into the fate of a video game doesnt make much sense, and that we'd rather just play and enjoy what we do get? Its pretty simple. Im simply happy to be able to play the damned remake to begin with. Also i believe in artistic integrity. First experience it and then you can complain all you want later.
Well, when the original game was that, an entire game, forgive us for not expecting the best of intentions from SE regarding this news.

This kind of attitude is so toxic.

The fact that it would be nearly impossible to recreate every single environment or event in one $60 FF7 game this day in age.

Play through it recently and realize that all of that would be played through as a third-person explorable town with drastically different environments that change assets completely.

Assuming you split this in two, just throwing that out there, you get more focus on that content as making the game more content focused and the added scenes will make it so that the game is roughly split in half as an entirely complete-able and lengthy RPG.

There is absolutely no way they could remake all of FF7 Remake as a copy without glossing over a majority of the details and more.

That's one "possibility" of many that we won't know until presumably Jump Festa in less than 2 weeks from today.
Yeah this is what Im hoping.

So....at best, we have 2-3 (or more) remake chapters, with new bits to the narrative, and potentially different gameplay modes and/or characters...

Somehow, I don't see SE being generous with how much each episode will cost.

It's not as 'inherently' bad as some people are hypothesizing, but it's certainly not great, either.

Yes, HD towns are expensive, but...idk. The pessimist in me is showing, but that happens often with (usually warranted) SE news.

Probably a good idea financially. Remakes and remasters are not big sellers, and this game appears to have quite a budget behind it.

You say that as if it were the easiest thing in the world.

Never said it was easy, just didn't have to involve colossally bad decisions like splitting into multiple parts, some of which will probably be delayed years apart from their predecessors. Seems like a really stupid move to me.

Again, I really hope they can prove me wrong on this, but I really doubt it.

I was having trouble wrapping my mind around how they were going to remake FF7 by today's standards. This at least finally offers up an explanation. Also explains why you've only seen the beginning of the game so far in all the trailers.

Remember when Based Lord Nomura-sama said VersusXIII was a series of stories making up an epic saga? And then Clown Prince Pretender Tabata-kun took over and said NO IT IS ONE GAME! Now Based Lord Nomura-sama (Savior of Square Enix) will have his revenge!

........

Lol.

This is the first bit of news about this remake that I don't like the sound of. Although we need more clarification.

I'm not against multi-part games in general, but I'm highly skeptical that it will work well for FFVII Remake.

Square Enix is probably doing this for business reasons. Allows them to get part 1 out to us sooner.

I'd rather wait a while longer for the whole game to come out on two discs. Is it really gonna be so huge that it's worth buying two or more $60 games?

Pretty much.

My main concern about episodic content is mostly concerning the backtracking. I'm guessing we'll be much more forced down a path this time around, but who knows.

Other than that, like i've said about the combat, I've resolved since the announcement that this was not going be like the old FF7, simply because it can't. You can't seriously expect to have a game like FF7 with the same amount of fidelity in 2015 without this.

There's a reason square-enix never really wanted to make a remake for all this time, as time went on. It's a MONEY PIT. There was never going to be a winning scenario, ever, where you get something the scale of FF7(with all the characters, detailed locations, combat, bosses and secret stuff) with the production of today's AAA game in just one 60$ game...or you'll have to wait 7 years and probably pay 100 dollars+ for it, if the game doesn't become vaporware first or the company bankrupt just because of the sheer size of it. And probably not even on ps4, christ

The compromise we have here is that it's gonna be more linear (less open world exploration). It sucks, but it's either that, or nothing at all ever. And people wishing that now are just incredibly petty. On the other hand, we'll have a level of detail and fidelity which will be really close to the original game, which is cool and mostly what I want.

predictions:

-the complete package will still be on a far smaller scope than the original ff7
-each episode will vary in quality and will be farmed out to various teams
-optional side quests and exploration will be close to non-existent
-no overworld or transition between the locations of each episode
-there will be no finite number of episodes, with various side stories or EU filler being brought in if sales are good
-if sales are bad, the story will be massively abridged with production values significantly dropping
-character progression will only exist on a micro scale, with each episode effectively being mechanically standalone
-the first episode will leave an optimism that the rest will sorely fail to live up to

I can't help but fill that ALL of this will come to pass.

I don't really like the idea of paying $80 CAD for FFXV, yet playing 3x $80 CAD for FFVIIr... (it not more).

Or maybe I'm going to wait for more information. Hate to break it to you most in this thread upset will likely buy the game regardless.

Well here's one who's out until at least a couple weeks after the release date when I can judge what's actually in the game and make a call on the sanity of purchasing.
